George and Lydia Hadley lived in a highly advanced house called the Happylife Home.

This
house did everything for them—cooked their food, tied their shoes, and even rocked them to
sleep. The most special room in their house was the nursery, which was filled with technology
that could make anything the children imagined come to life.

George and Lydia had two children, Peter and Wendy. The children loved the nursery.
Recently, however, George and Lydia had become worried. They noticed the nursery always
seemed to show an African veldt—a dry, hot grassland with lions. The lions looked real, and
George could hear them roar and smell the heat of the veldt. It was too realistic, and it scared
Lydia.

One day, Lydia asked George, "Maybe we should shut the house down for a while. The children
are spending too much time in the nursery. It isn't good for them." George thought she might be
right. When he tried to change the nursery’s setting, it stayed the same—a veldt, with lions that
looked like they were eating something in the distance. George felt uneasy.

That evening, they talked to Peter and Wendy about the nursery. The children acted surprised
and said they didn't know why the veldt was there. They claimed they had nothing to do with it
and that they had been imagining different places, like a fairytale world. George was not
convinced.

Feeling worried, George and Lydia decided to call a psychologist, David McClean, to check on
the nursery. When David arrived, he looked around and said, "This nursery reflects the children’s
thoughts. Right now, their thoughts are dark, angry, and dangerous. I think it’s best if you turn
the nursery off and let the children have a break from all this technology."

George decided David was right. He told Peter and Wendy that they would be turning off the
house for a while. The children were very upset. They begged George and Lydia to let them use
the nursery one last time. George, feeling guilty, agreed to give them a few more minutes.

Suddenly, George and Lydia heard Peter and Wendy calling for help from inside the nursery.
They rushed in to save them, but as soon as they entered, the door closed behind them, and they
were trapped in the veldt. The lions were there, and they were getting closer.

A little while later, David McClean returned to the house. He found Peter and Wendy in the
nursery, sitting calmly and watching the lions in the distance. The children seemed relaxed, and
David saw the lions finishing their meal. He realized with horror that George and Lydia were
gone, and the children were now in control.
