Midterm test 9th II term

The document outlines a mid-term assessment for the Natural Sciences and Environmental Education Department for the 2024-2025 academic year. It includes questions related to atomic structure, periodic properties, and chemical bonding, requiring students to demonstrate their understanding of scientific concepts through electron configurations, predictions of atomic behavior, and molecular structures. Students are instructed to provide detailed explanations and calculations to support their answers.

Periodic properties are physical and chemical characteristics of elements that vary in a regular and
predictable manner across the periodic table. These properties include:
• Atomic Radius: The distance from the nucleus of an atom to its outermost electron. It
generally decreases from left to right across a period and increases down a group.
• Ionization Energy: The energy required to remove an electron from an atom. It typically
increases from left to right across a period and decreases down a group.
• Electron Affinity: The energy change when an electron is added to an atom. It often becomes
more negative (or less positive) from left to right across a period and varies down a group.
• Electronegativity: A measure of an atom's ability to attract electrons in a covalent bond. It
generally increases from left to right across a period and decreases down a group.
By arranging elements by their atomic number, these properties exhibit repeating patterns
that allow elements to be grouped into families or groups with similar properties, facilitating
the prediction of their chemical and physical behavior.

Use the effective nuclear charge and shielding effect of the atom, along with the definitions
above, to predict the periodic properties of atom X. Explain each prediction.

the ions involved.

9. Propose a different atom (from period 2) whose properties would allow it to form a covalent
bond with atom X. Use Bohr’s atomic models to show how electrons are shared.
10. Draw the molecule’s structure using a Lewis structure.
