AEROSPACE AMS6359™ REV. M

MATERIAL SPECIFICATION Issued 1942-12

Reaffirmed 2011-05
Revised 2025-02

Superseding AMS6359L

Steel, Sheet, Strip, and Plate

0.80Cr - 1.8Ni - 0.25Mo (0.38 - 0.43C) (SAE 4340).
Aircraft Quality
(Composition similar to UNS G43406)

RATIONALE

AMS6359M is the result of a Five-Year Review and update of the specification. The revision updates the Title to include
material quality, clarifies composition reporting (see 3.1.2), updates condition requirements to require tempering if product
is normalized (see 3.2.1 and 3.2.2), updates decarburization testing (see 3.3.3), clarifies bending (see 3.3.4), adds heat-treat
condition to reports (see 4.4.1), addresses AMS2301 (see 4.2.1, 4.4.1, and 4.4.3), and updates the exclusion requirements
(see 4.4.2).

1. SCOPE

1.1 Form

This specification covers an aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of sheet, strip, and plate.

1.2 Application

These products have been used typically for heat-treated parts requiring good tensile and fatigue strength in combination
with good ductility, but usage is not limited to such applications. The product may be through-hardened to tensile
strength ranges of 260 to 280 ksi (1793 to 1931 MPa) in nominal section thickness of 1.5 inches (38 mm) and under and
180 to 220 ksi (1241 to 1517 MPa) in nominal section thickness of 3 inches (76 mm) and under.

1.2.1 Certain design and processing procedures may cause these products to become susceptible to stress-corrosion
cracking after heat treatment; ARP1110 recommends practices to minimize such conditions.

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

The issue of the following documents in effect on the date of the purchase order forms a part of this specification to the
extent specified herein. The supplier may work to a subsequent revision of a document unless a specific document issue is
specified. When the referenced document has been cancelled and no superseding document has been specified, the last
published issue of that document shall apply.
