2 HOURS 45 MINUTES
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
This paper consists of two sections; A and B. it has SIX
examination items.
Section A has TWO compulsory items.
Section B has two parts; I and II. Answer one item from each
part.
Answer four items in all.
You may use diagrams, where applicable, to illustrate your
answers.
Any additional item(s) answered will not be scored.
All answers must be written in the answer sheets provided.
Section A
Answer both items in this section
Item 1: Map Skills
For this item use the EAST AFRICA 1:50000 (UGANDA): NAKASONGOLA, extract
sheet 50/2 series Y732 Edition 1- USD to respond to the tasks.
Nakasongola lying 1.20 North of equator has several places and features which
can attract tourists if they are developed. These include natural landscapes,
vegetation, climate and human culture. The climate is characterized by a long dry
period and a short period of heavy rainfall. The investor wants to find out the
possible opportunities in the area.
Accordingly, the investors has contracted an engineering company to lay a water
pipeline from the water tank at iralika (291472) to the proposed camp site at
kakondi hill peak (361450). To carry out the project effectively the engineers need
to get full information about the relief of the area and the proposed pipeline
movement.
Task:
a) Guide the engineers on the distance and the direction of the
proposed camp site from the water tank.
b) Using an appropriate diagram, show the area of Nakasongola.
c) Describe the following on the map of Nakasongola.
i) Relief
ii) Drainage
iii) Vegetation
How useful can the survey map of Nakasongola be to the investor?

Item 2: Photograph Skills


During the recent airborne surveys carried out by ministry of energy and mineral
development, large deposits of iron were discovered in the area shown in the
photograph. the local community received the news of the mineral discovery with
great happiness and celebration. They expected that they would be given first
priority to mine the iron ore using simple artisan methods. They thought that
mining would supplement their incomes from peasant agriculture.
However, the ministry has a plan to lease the mineral deposits to two foreign
companies which have the experience in commercial mining and mineral
processing.
This is aimed at ensuring that mining in the area promotes both local and national
development. During a consultative meeting with the people from the ministry in
which you participated, members of your community expressed their worry that
large-scale mining and mineral processing by foreign companies might not benefit
the area, but instead cause several losses.
Task:
a) i) Draw a sketch of the area shown in the photograph provided.
ii) Using the photograph provided, explain to the ministry officials
evidence of the losses the local community fear to incur and suggest
measures that should be taken to ensure that the local communities
get long-term benefits from the mining.
(b) Advise the community members on the need to accept the
ministry’s plan of leasing the mineral deposits to the foreign
mining companies.

Part 1
Item 3
George Williams is a journalist working for BBC television in East Africa. As he
moved east Africa collecting data, he happened to crossover the Indian ocean
coast and saw landscape of such asthenic beauty for the first time in his life. He
instead took initiative to find further information about such beautiful coast to be
reported to BBC for archives. His biggest challenge is how such beautiful coast
came to be. According to him, what looks like hills was curved by water to make
unique landscapes along the coast and if the they are removed where are they
taken by waves? In the pursuit to find answers to his problem which is to be
reported, listened to, and to be used by researchers worldwide, some of the
community members were approached to give the account for such a beautiful
coastal land and you are one of them.

b) Help him understand how the beautiful coast came to be.
Item 4:
The East African countries some of which include Tanzania and Kenya lay at the
coastal plains of altitude 0-100 meters and 0-100meters respectively.in Tanzania
its 0-330 feet with Dar -es -salaam being at 0-50 meters (0-164 feet), Kenya (0-330
feet) with Mombasa being at 0-50 meters (0-164 feet).
This coastal plains of East Africa are experiencing rapid population growth,
urbanization, and economic development. coastal pollution poses significant
threats to marine ecosystems, human health, and global economy. The
consequences/effects are far-reaching affecting marine life to tourism and
fisheries. The governments of two countries have advocated for the economic
development with environmental conservation practices. They have put up
writing competition challenge in all schools and your chosen to represent your
school on the theme ‘’coastal pollution and mitigation’’.

a) Write an essay to be presented to the two governments on
the above theme.

Item: 4
Uganda’s Mabira forest, a vital ecosystem providing timber fuelwood, and habitat
for endangered species, faces threats from illegal logging. agricultural,
encroachment and urbanization. Mabira forest provides livelihood for over
100000 people, their over dependency has led to Uganda’s forest cover to
decrease from 24% to 12%. since 1990. The climate change projection s indicates
increased drought and wildlife fires.
The district forest offices responsible for Mabira forest management is of a view
that the society should ensure balanced economic, social and environmental
needs. While ensuring long-term forest sustainability. The district forest officer is
prioritizing environmental needs and sustainability. you have been chosen to lead
the team on the best environmental need practices and how best forest
sustainability can be achieved.

Task:
a) You were chosen to be an assistant to the district forest officer;
i) Write the best possible environmental need practices.
b) Explain to the forest officer the best practices to be adopted by the community
to ensure sustainability.
