5 INSTALLATION

5.1 SCOPE OF DELIVERY

The basic equipment consists of the following components:

• Instrument WICOMETRE PROFESSIONAL
• Plug-in mains unit
• Protective dust cover
• Operating instructions

5.2 INSTALLATION OF THE EQUIPMENT

Caution:
The instrument is to be installed in such a way that it is not exposed to direct sunlight or to
extreme temperatures since such influences may affect reading of the display. High noise levels
disturb signal sensing by the microphone. The microphone should therefore be placed at a
sufficient distance from noisy machines, loudspeakers and particularly from ultrasonic cleaning
machines. If the instrument is equipped with a printer then this should also be placed at a
sufficient distance.

5.2.1 Mains supply

The equipment is supplied from a mains adapter unit with an output of 9 V~ and a rating of
11 VA. The mains adapter is available for nominal mains voltages of 230 V~ (range 210 V~ to
240 V~) or 120 V~ (range 110 V~ to 130 V~).

BEFORE CONNECTING THE INSTRUMENT FOR THE FIRST TIME, CHECK THAT
THE MAINS ADAPTER UNIT VOLTAGE CORRESPONDS TO YOUR MAINS SUPPLY
VOLTAGE.

Use only an original Witschi mains adapter unit.

Connect the mains adapter unit to the corresponding socket for the mains adapter.

5.2.2 Microphone or a signal sensor connection

Connect the Stand Microphone or the automatic multi-position microphone MICROMAT P to the
socket microphone. You may also connect diverse Signal sensors, which are optionally available.

5.2.3 Printer connection

Before connecting the printer, remove the protection from the connector printer.

Caution! Check whether the voltage stated on the printer corresponds to the local mains
voltage.

6 OPERATING

Switch on the instrument with the level rotary knob and set the index line to I. The following
display appears after switching on:

VX.X = Software version

Attention:
Instead of STAB-MICROMAT H-V/V-H 1T , the display may show STAB- MICROMAT H-V/V-H
2T. The differences are described in chapter 15.3 STABILIZATION TIME, page 24.
Thanks to the integral parameter memory, the last-programmed settings remain stored from the
last time the instrument was turned off.
Caution: The time base of the WICOMETRE PROFESSIONAL reaches its full stability about
2 minutes after being switched on (temperature stabilization of the quartz crystal).
If your instrument is equipped with the printer, do not forget to switch on the printer, too.
Your instrument is now ready to operate. Chapter 8 give details of how you can change the
parameters.
Clamp a watch onto the microphone, preferably in such a way that the crown lies between the
metal leads of the signal sensor, and then rotate the microphone to the required test position.
Please refer to chapter 15 OPERATING THE MICROMAT P if you intend using the automatic
multi-position microphone MICROMAT P
The sig LED flashes to the rhythm of the beats of the watch and indicates that a signal is being
received.

Witschi Electronic Ltd Page 9

7 CONTROL KEYS

7.1 level ROTARY KNOB

Enables manual adjustment of the signal amplification.
The instrument features an automatic gain control which gives a clear graph for most types of
watch when the rotary knob is in the standard position (index line set to I).
Use the rotary knob to increase or decrease the signal amplification if no clear diagram appears
with this standard setting.
If the diagram is unclear due to extraneous noises from the escapement, this problem can often be
overcome by decreasing the gain.
Should the all-important first signal in the signal package be too small, it may nevertheless be
correctly detected by increasing the gain. Take care though, as increasing the gain will also raise
the sensitivity to other outside noises.
(See chapter 14.1 BEAT NOISE OF THE WATCH, page 19 ).

7.2 cursor KEY

A parameter which has to be changed can be selected with this key. The chosen parameter is
displayed in inverse form (black background).
The BEATS PER HOUR parameter cannot be chosen if the parameter BEAT MODE is set to AUT
or FRQ as it is automatically selected.

7.3 Ï KEY
The next higher value for a parameter is selected by pressing the Ï key as follows:
• step by step each time the key is briefly pressed
• continuously when the key is kept in the depressed position
• quickly if the Ï key is also pressed while the Ð key is in the depressed position.

7.4 Ð KEY
The next lower value for a parameter is selected by pressing the Ð key as follows:
• step by step each time the key is briefly pressed
• continuously when the key is kept in the depressed position
• quickly if the Ð key is also pressed while the Ï key is in the depressed position.

7.5 freeze KEY

The current display is stored and can be viewed for as long as needed once the freeze key has
been pressed.
Normal running is resumed with continuous refreshing of the display when the freeze key is
pressed again.
(See chapter 11 ACOUSTIC CHECK, page 16).

Page 10 Witschi Electronic Ltd

7.6 print KEY
Use this key to start the print-out of the results.
The currently displayed numerical values for the rate, the beat error and the amplitude are printed
out if the key is pressed while a measurement is actually running.
The entire display is printed out in a graphic form if the key pressed while the display is frozen
(after the freeze key has been pressed).
(See chapter 12 PRINTOUT OF THE RESULTS, page 16).

7.7 speaker KEY

The built-in loudspeaker may be switched ON and OFF by pressing the speaker key.
(See chapter 11 ACOUSTIC CHECK, page 16).

8 PARAMETERS

8.1 PARAMETER SELECTION

Use the key marked cursor to select a parameter which should be changed. The selected
parameter appears in inverse form (black background).
The BEATS PER HOUR parameter cannot be chosen if the parameter BEAT MODE is set to AUT
or FRQ as it is automatically selected.

8.2 BEAT MODE PARAMETER

The functions AUT, MAN, SEL or FRQ can be called with the Ï and Ð keys for the selection of
the beat number.
AUT Automatic selection: in this position the instrument analyses the beat number of the
watch which has to be measured. The following beat numbers are selected automatically:
12000, 14400, 18000, 21600, 28800 and 36000
MAN Manual selection: this position enables the less common beat numbers and those that
cannot be determined automatically to be selected for the BEATS PER HOUR parameter.
List of selectable beat-numbers
6000 7200 7380 7440 7800 9000 9100 10800 11880
12000 12342 12480 12600 13320 13440 13500 14000 14040
14160 14200 14280 14400 14520 14580 14760 14850 15000
15360 15600 16200 16320 16800 17196 17258 17280 17786
17897 18000 18049 18514 19332 19440 19800 20160 20222
20944 21000 21031 21306 21600 28800 36000

Witschi Electronic Ltd Page 11

SEL Individual selection: this position enables the value of the beat number for the BEATS
PER HOUR parameter to be increased or decreased in steps of 1 by pressing the Ï and
Ð keys. This increase or decrease will occur in steps of 100 if both keys are pressed
simultaneously. The SEL position is needed when watches with unusual beat numbers are
to be tested. Any value between 3600 and 36000 b/h can be selected.
FRQ Frequency determination: this function enables watches with unknown beat numbers
to be tested. It shows the instantaneous beat number for a rate = 0 s/24h.
Examples:
1. Select the FRQ function. The WICOMETRE PROFESSIONAL now shows the instantaneous
beat number for the watch under test, e.g. 17276. Compare this with the list of selectable
beat numbers (at the top of this page). There you will find the number 17280 which is the
probable frequency for that watch. Set this beat number in the MAN position and check
the watch.

2. Check the watch to be regulated by reading the time over a period of 24 hours and noting
the deviation, e.g. +180 s/24h. Select the FRQ function. Once the WICOMETRE
PROFESSIONAL has calculated the beat number and the display is stable, select the SEL
function by means of the Ð key. The measured beat number is now stored. Regulate the
watch to give a reading of -180 s/24h. Go back to the FRQ function and the instrument
should show the correct beat number for the watch.

8.3 BEATS PER HOUR PARAMETER

This parameter shows the value of the selected beat number.
The value can only be changed in the operating mode MAN or SEL. Setting takes place automati-
cally if the BEAT MODE is on AUT or FRQ.
The selectable values are listed in chapter 8.2 BEAT MODE PARAMETER.

8.4 MEAS. TIME PARAMETER

Display of the measuring time which is used to build up the average values for the numerical
results.
When starting a measurement, the first results appear after the measuring time has elapsed . The
average values will be refreshed every 2 seconds regardless of the measuring time selected.
A line under the diagram, the length of which corresponds to the measuring time, shows the part
of the diagram used to build up the numerical results.
The horizontal recording speed of the diagram is reduced automatically in order that the entire
evaluated part of the diagram remains visible with long measuring times. This is achieved by no
longer recording all the beats of the watch but only every third, fifth, or seventh one.
Selectable measuring times: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 120, 180 and 240 s.

Page 12 Witschi Electronic Ltd

8.5 LIFT ANGLE PARAMETER
Displays the selected lift angle of the escapement.
This value is required to calculate the amplitude and must be selected according to the watch
movement. The lift angle is 52o for many common movements.
The lift angle can be set to between 10o and 90o.
Caution:
An incorrect adjustment of the lift angle will give a false value for the amplitude. A lift angle that
has been set too low results in too low a value for the amplitude and a lift angle that has been set
too high results in too high a value for the amplitude.

8.6 GRAPH RESOL. PARAMETER

Sets the vertical time resolution of the diagram (magnifier) and the resolution of the rate display.
By increasing the time resolution, the inclination of the diagram for a particular rate deviation will
increase. Any other irregularities in the beat noise will also be displayed proportionately magnified.
With a setting of between 1 and 4 mm/ms the numerical rate deviation will be displayed in seconds
per day.
With a setting of between 5 and 10 mm/ms the rate deviation will be displayed with a resolution of
0.10 second, whereby the measuring range is limited to 99.9 s/24h.
To avoid the limited resolution of the screen with its 0.5 mm grid having a disturbing effect, we
recommend working with the highest possible resolution relevant to the quality of the watch.

8.7 TEST MODE PARAMETER

Selects the operating and display mode by means of the Ï and Ð keys.
GRAPH Standard operating mode with graphic diagram recording and display of
the numerical results.
PRINXX If the WICOMETRE PROFESSIONAL is equipped with a printer, an automatic printout
of the rate, the beat error and the amplitude always occurs after the selected
measuring time MEAS.TIME has elapsed. The display is the same as in the operating
mode GRAPH. Once the measuring time has elapsed, an automatic freeze is
implemented of 19 s for a beat number of 18,000, 16 s for 21,600 and 12 s for
28,800. This gives the watch time to settle if it is turned to a new position during
this time by rotating the microphone. The next measurement is automatically started
when the freeze period has elapsed.
Note: The manually set freeze has priority over an automatic freeze, i.e. the instrument
stays in freeze state when manually set until the freeze key is pressed once more.

Witschi Electronic Ltd Page 13

LAB-PC This operating mode is similar to PRINXX. It is intended for the output of results to
a personal computer via the RS 232C serial interface. The stored results can be used
for long-term tests, quality assurance checks and statistical evaluations. The PC
program software package, serial link cable and operating manual are available as
an option.

CHOICE OF AUTOMATIC MICROPHONE POSITIONS

If the automatic microphone MICROMAT PB is connected, you may program the
combination of the test positions by means of the parameter TEST MODE.
(See chapter 14 OPERATING THE MICROMAT P, page )

SCOPE 1 , SCOPE 2 and SCOPE 3

The appliance is equipped with three different SCOPE operating modes.
(See chapter 13 OSCILLOSCOPE FUNCTION, page 17).

Page 14 Witschi Electronic Ltd

9 THE DIAGRAM

Because of the display principle used for the LCD-graphic screen, the following distinctions have to
be taken into account in comparison with diagram recording on paper strips:
The dots of the diagram are represented by the grid points (pixels) on the screen. These dots are
spaced at a distance of 0.5 mm. A sloping diagram is therefore always displayed as a staircase with
steps of 0.5 mm with the distance between the lines being a multiple of 0.5 mm only.
This effect occurs with high precision watches only and with a low diagram resolution. This effect
is normally obscured by the natural irregularities of the diagram. We therefore recommend working
with the highest possible resolution appropriate to the quality of the watch concerned.
As one dot is recorded for every beat of the watch and the dots have a fixed distance of 0.5 mm,
the recording speed as well as the slope of the diagram depend on the beat number of the
particular watch.
The horizontal recording speed is automatically reduced to ensure that the entire evaluated part of
the diagram remains visible during long-term measurements. This is achieved by not recording all
the watch beats but only every third, fifth, or seventh one.

10 THE NUMERICAL RESULTS

The watch beats are always evaluated over a time period of 2 seconds for all numerical results.
If a longer measuring time (parameter MEAS. TIME) is set then the result will be the average
value of all the individual measurements. The average value is re-calculated continuously every 2 s.
Thus, for example: the last 5 measurements over 2 s periods are taken into account to determine
the average value for a measuring time of 10 s. The evaluated part of the diagram is marked by an
underscore.
Each diagram must be clean and even if the results obtained are to be significant and stable.
The longer the measuring time selected, the more stable the result displayed will be since
short-term rate irregularities will be compensated.

Witschi Electronic Ltd Page 15

11 ACOUSTIC CHECK

The beat noise can be checked for irregularities and stray noises by means of the built-in
loudspeaker.
The loudspeaker may be switched ON or OFF by pressing the speaker key.
An acoustic check is recommended whenever a clean diagram is not formed with the normal
amplification adjustment or when the diagram shows irregularities which are not easily explained.
The beat noise can also be analyzed in graphic form by using the 3 different SCOPE-functions.
(See chapter 13 OSCILLOSCOPE FUNCTIONS, page 17).

12 PRINTOUT OF THE RESULTS

The following sections only apply if the instrument is equipped with a printer.

12.1 NUMERICAL RESULTS

The currently shown results for rate, beat error and amplitude will be printed out if the print key is
pressed during an on-going measurement. In addition, an empty line marked REF is printed out on
which you may enter hand-written notes concerning the caliber, check position, etc.
The paper is shifted forward after each printout so that the strip can be torn off and placed with
the watch.

12.2 CONTINUOUS PRINTOUT

The current results are automatically printed out as each of the set measuring periods elapses in
the PRINXX mode (selectable in the parameter window TEST MODE). The printout is made in a
concentrated form on one line. The lines are numbered consecutively.
A freeze is inserted automatically after each printout for a period dependent on the beat number.

12.3 GRAPHIC PRINTOUT

The diagram or the beat noise (in the SCOPE1, SCOPE2 or SCOPE3 mode) is printed out in a
graphic form if the print key is pressed while a display is being stored (after pressing the freeze
key).

Page 16 Witschi Electronic Ltd

13 OSCILLOSCOPE FUNCTION

The oscilloscope function allows the acoustical beat noise of a watch to be presented in a graphic
form.
The beat noise is presented in the form of an envelope curve showing the maximum and minimum
signal amplitudes. The numeric results are not displayed in the SCOPE-functions.
The amplitude of the oscillograms can be changed with the level control.
This presentation makes errors in the escapement or stray noises visible immediately and with
some experience the watchmaker should be able to recognize the source of the error.
The oscillograms can also be stored for closer examination by pressing the freeze key and, if
required, they can be printed out.

13.1 SCOPE 1
The display covers a period of 20 ms with this mode of oscillogram presentation.
The entire beat noise is visible on the screen. Triggering is so arranged that a 'tick' and a 'tock' are
recorded alternately.
This type of presentation is suitable for analyzing beat noises.

13.2 SCOPE 2
The display covers a space of 220 ms with this mode of oscillogram presentation.
Two to three consecutive beat noises are presented on the screen, according to the beat number.
The presentation starts alternately with a 'tick' and a 'tock'.
This type of presentation is suitable for analyzing stray noises which occur between the watch
beats.

14 OPERATING

The following information is intended to help understand the operation of the WICOMETRE
PROFESSIONAL and to interpret the display correctly.

14.1 BEAT NOISE OF THE WATCH

• The beat noise of a watch is usually composed of three different pulses:

• The first noise results when the ellipse on the balance wheel touches the fork (A). This beat is
time-wise very precise and is therefore used for producing the diagram as well as for calculating
the rate and beat error.

• The contact of the escape wheel with the entry pallet produces a second pulse (B). This noise is
very irregular and is not used for evaluation purposes.

• The third and most intense noise is produced by the escape wheel striking the exit pallet (C).
This noise is used for calculating the amplitude.

A B C

Production of the beat noise.

Witschi Electronic Ltd Page 19

C

A
B

SCOPE1

Fig. 7 Oscillogram of the beat noise

Besides the above mentioned pulses, friction and stray noises also occur to a more or less degree.

It is important that the beginning of the first noise burst (A) is reliably detected for evaluation
purposes. If this first noise burst is weak for a particular watch, or if the watch produces strong
stray noises, then the amplification should be adjusted accordingly.

It should always be remembered that the beat noise is not composed of single sharp pulses but
rather of numerous mechanical noises which increase to a maximum and then decrease again. The
measured times therefore show a certain dependence on the amplification adjustment and on the
instantaneous signal form

14.2 DIAGRAM RECORDING

The time between two successive watch beats (period duration) is measured and compared with
the nominal value of an exact rate for diagram recording. If the measured time corresponds
precisely with the nominal value, the new point will be set exactly beside the previous one. If the
new beat comes a bit too early or too late, the new point will be shifted upwards or downwards,
according to the time difference from the nominal value. The rows of dots on the display therefore
form a straight horizontal line or a line sloping upwards or downwards line according to the rate.

Of course, the diagram not only shows the rate but also other time irregularities in the watch
beats, for example: beat errors, defective teeth on the escape wheel, etc.

Page 20 Witschi Electronic Ltd

14.3 RATE DEVIATION
To calculate the rate the differences between the measured period duration and the nominal value
are accumulated over a period of 2 seconds, converted into seconds per 24 hours and displayed on
the screen.

14.4 BEAT ERROR

If the watch has a beat error, then the duration of the period between a 'tick' and a 'tock' is not as
long as the period between a 'tock' and a 'tick'. The average value of the time difference is always
calculated over a period of 2 seconds and is displayed on the screen.

14.5 AMPLITUDE
The time between the pulse A and pulse C of the beat noise is measured to calculate the amplitude
(see Figs. 6 and 7).
The balance wheel rotates through a particular angle between these two pulses. This so-called "lift
angle" is determined by the design of the watch movement and must be set as parameter. The
higher the amplitude of the balance wheel, the higher the speed with which it passes through this
lift angle and hence the shorter the time it needs to traverse this angle.
The amplitude can therefore be calculated from the time between pulse A and C of the beat noise
taking the beat number and lift angle into consideration. The WICOMETRE PROFESSIONAL always
calculates the average value of the amplitude over 2 seconds.

15.2 MEASUREMENTS AND DISPLAY OF THE RESULTS
A watch can be fastened to the microphone once the required measurement positions have been
programmed for the test sequence. In order that the measurement positions are true,
take care to ensure that the dial faces upwards and that the crown is against the
fork of the microphone (signal sensor).
Press the start button on the MICROMAT P to start the measurement sequence. This is
accompanied by the run LED lighting up until the end of the sequence to indicate that
measurements are being taken. Measurements are only taken after a certain stabilization time has
elapsed following each change in measurement position (see section 145.3 STABILIZATION TIME). The
results of the measurements are displayed in tabular form at the end of each sequence until such
times as the start button is pressed again. A printout of the results is also made automatically if a
printer is connected to the system.

(See chapter 12 PRINTOUT OF THE RESULTS, page 16).

Example:

Display of the measurement results on the LCD-screen

The measurement sequence can be interrupted at any point by pressing the reset button which
also causes the microphone to return to its starting position. Any measurement results already
obtained are displayed.
There is a slide switch on the back of the MICROMAT P which has two positions:
norm. Once a measurement sequence is over the start button has to be pressed again to
trigger a new one.
cont. Once a measurement sequence is over the next one is stared automatically after a
pause of 60 minutes.
