Teacher Letter of Recommendation Request
Teacher Letter of Recommendation Request
Teachers who write letters of recommendation spend a great deal of time and effort preparing these letters for you.
These letters play a significant role in college admissions, particularly among small and mid-size colleges.
The more detailed information you provide for the letter writer, the better s/he will be able to
prepare an accurate, interesting, and impressive portrayal of you. In choosing the teacher/s that you would like to write
your letter/s, remember that this person acts as your “agent,” helping to
get you accepted into college/s. Therefore, it is in your best interest to carefully follow the directions outlined below.
1. Teachers receive numerous requests to write letters of recommendation. It is important to allow the writer
ample time to prepare the letter. Request letters of recommendation prior to the end of junior year. Have an
IN PERSON conversation with your teacher/s. Explain to teacher/s that you are asking them early because you
will be filling out the Common Application when it is available on August 1st, and that you plan to file your
applications early in the fall of senior year.
2. Colleges usually require two letters of recommendation. Before making this decision about which teacher/s to
ask, consult with your school counselor. Then ask the teacher/s if they would be willing to write a letter on your
behalf.
3. When you ask the teacher/s you have selected to write a letter for you, be aware that the teacher/s may refuse
your request for any number of valid reasons. S/he may not know you well enough to write a recommendation
or s/he may have received so many requests for recommendations that s/he is unable to accept any additional
requests.
4. Once the teacher has agreed to write the letter of recommendation on your behalf, complete the attached
form entitled “Request for Teacher Recommendation” & add your teacher request in your student Scoir
account. If possible, attach a sample of work that you did in the teacher’s class. And relate a specific, positive
experience you recall about the class such as an anecdote, class discussion, group project/presentation, etc.
