Academic Year: 2020-2021
First Semester
Sheet No. 3
Single Degree of Freedom (Forced Vibration)

Problem No. 1
The simple pendulum is pivoted at point (o) as shown in Fig. Pro. No.1.
If the mass of the rod is negligible, and for small oscillation find:
1. The equation of motion,
2. The natural frequency, ωd
3. If K=1000N/m, M=5 Kg, C=10 N.S/m, L=0.7m, a=b=0.3m, and
the applied torque T= 3sin (8t). What is the magnification factor, λ.

Problem No. 2
A machine of m = 250 kg is mounted on vibration isolators incorporating
some damping. Its rotor is unbalanced to the extent of mr . e = 0.1 kg.cm.
When the machine is started up, it is observed that at speed of 200 r.p.m
the maximum forced vibration occurs. It is also observed that the
amplitude of free damped vibrations decays to 0.05 of its initial value
after four complete cycles.
1. Determine the amplitude, (X), and phase angle, (Φ) of steady state
forced vibrations at the normal speed of 1000 r.p.m,
2. The transmissibility of forces, (TR) and transmitted force (FT).

Problem No. 3
a. For the system is shown in Fig. Pro. No. 3, derive the equation of
motion using energy method,
b. Knowing that, m1=m2=m3= 1kg, L=1m, k1=k2=100N/m, k3= 160N/m,
k4= 250N/m, C= 12 N.s/m, Fo = 610N, and Ω =20 rad/sec, find:
i. The undamped natural frequency (ωn),
ii. The damped natural frequency (ωd),
iii. The amplitude for the steady state response (θ), and its phase angle
(Φ),
iv. For free Vibration: calculate the amplitude for the fifth cycle (θ5),
knowing θ1=4o.

Problem No. 4
A machine of mass 100 kg is supported on four springs with stiffness
100 N/cm per each one. If a harmonic disturbing force of magnitude 50 N
acts on the machine, assuming viscous damping coefficient of 12 N.
Sec/cm. Determine:

a) The resonant frequency and resonant amplitude,

b) The peak amplitude and the phase angle corresponding to it,
c) The transmissibility and the force transmitted to the foundation at
resonance,
d) The logarithmic decrement,
e) The ratio of any two consecutive amplitudes.

Problem No. 5
A moment Mo sin Ω t is applied to the end of the bar, as shown in the
attached Fig. Pro. No. 5. Given that Ω = 500rpm, k = 7000N/m, C =
650N.S/m, L = 1.2m, and the mass of the bar is m = 15kg.
a. Write down the equation of motion of the system, showing the
values equivalent mass meq, equivalent damping coefficient ceq, and
equivalent stiffness keq,

b. Determine the natural frequency ωn, the damping factor ζ, the

damped frequency ωd, damped period Td, logarithmic decrement δ,
and the frequency ratio r,
c. Write down the steady state response for the forced undamped
system given, Note that the steady sate response is θ (t) = θm Sin
(Ωt-Ψ) for forced damped vibration, given that θm = θst .λ and θst =
Mo/keq. Also the phase angle, Ψ equal Ψ = tan-1(2ζr/1-r2), and the
amplification factor λ is given as: λ=1/√(1−𝑟2)2+(2ζ 𝑟)2 for which r
=Ω/ωn is the frequency ratio
d. Determine the maximum value of Mo such that the steady state
amplitude of the angular oscillation, θm does not exceed 10o.

Problem No. 6

A weight attached to a spring of stiffness 525 N/cm has a viscous

damping device. When the wright is displaced and released, the period of
vibration is found to be 1.8 sec. and the ratio of consecutive amplitudes is
4.2 to 1.0. Determine the amplitude and phase angle when a force f(t)
=2cos 3t acts on the system as shown in Fig. Pro. No. 6, the force
transmitted and the transmissibility at resonance.

of a motor vehicle traveling in the horizontal direction. Find the relative
displacement of the vehicle as it travels over a road bump of the form y(s)
=Y sin πs/δ.

Problem No. 8
The damped single degree of freedom mass-spring system shown in Fig.
Pro. No. 8 has a mass m = 25 kg, and a spring stiffness coefficient k =
2500 N/m. Determine the damping coefficient of the system knowing that
the mass exhibits an amplitude of 0.01 m when the support oscillates at
the natural frequency of the system with amplitude Yo = 0.005 m.
Determine also the amplitude of dynamic force carried by the support and
the displacement of the mass relative to the support.
