Lesson Content

Construction of Triangles
To construct a triangle, we need specific information such as the lengths of sides or angles.

Example: Construct triangle ABC with AB = 6 cm, AC = 5 cm, and BC = 4 cm.

Steps:

1. Draw line AB = 6 cm.

2. With A as center and radius 5 cm, draw an arc.
3. With B as center and radius 4 cm, draw another arc to intersect the previous arc at point
C.
4. Join AC and BC to form triangle ABC.
Drawing and Bisection of a Line Segment
To bisect a line segment means to divide it into two equal parts.

Steps:

1. Draw line segment AB.

2. With A and B as centers, and radius more than half of AB, draw arcs above and below
the line.
3. Label the intersection points of the arcs as X and Y.
4. Draw line XY to intersect AB at midpoint M. M is the bisector.

Construction and Bisection of Angles

Using a compass and straightedge, we can construct and bisect various standard angles.

Standard angle constructions include:

 90° - Constructed by bisecting a straight angle (180°) or using perpendicular bisector.

 60° - Constructed directly using compass from a straight line.
 45° - Bisect 90° angle.
 30° - Bisect 60° angle.
 120° - Constructed by drawing 60° on the opposite side of the baseline.
 135° - Bisect 90° and 180° angles or construct 90° + 45°.
 150° - Construct 60° and add to a straight line or bisect 120° and 180°.

Bisection of an Angle
To bisect an angle:

5. Construct or identify the given angle.

6. Place compass at the angle's vertex and draw an arc that cuts both rays.
7. From the two points where the arc cuts the rays, draw arcs to intersect each other.
8. Draw a line from the vertex to the point of intersection of the arcs. This line bisects the
angle.

Class Activity
Students will work in pairs and individually to construct a triangle, draw and bisect a line,
and construct each of the listed angles using only compass and ruler.

Summary/Conclusion
 Geometric constructions require precision and use of compass and ruler.
 Line segments and angles can be bisected using specific compass steps.
 Understanding the principles of triangle construction is essential for accurate geometric
work.

Assignment
1. Construct triangle PQR with PQ = 7 cm, QR = 6 cm, and PR = 5 cm.
2. Draw and bisect a line segment of 8 cm.
3. Construct and bisect angles: 60°, 90°, and 135°.
