3. PROCESS INDUSTRIES AND MATERIAL SCIENCE - Acids: sulfuric, nitric, and phosphoric
acid. Chlor-Alkali: soda ash, caustic soda, and chlorine. Fertilizer: ammonia, urea,
ammonium phosphate and sulfate, triple and triple super phosphate. Sugar, extraction of
vegetable oil, and ethanol from fermentation. Properties of material and level of
structure; crystal imperfection. Deformation of material: elastic and plastic deformation,
creep and types of fracture; Heat treatment, corrosion, and its prevention.
4. PROCESS HEAT TRANSFER - Conduction heat transfer: Fourier law, steady state
unidirectional heat flow through single/multiple slab and cylinder; Insulation: properties,
critical and optimum thickness; Conduction heat transfer: individual and overall heat
transfer coefficients, LMTD; Boiling and condensation; Radiation: basic definitions;
Stefan-Boltzmann law, Wein’s displacement law, Kirchhoff’s law: Evaporator: capacity
and economy; multiple effect evaporator: methods of feeding, effect of liquid head and
boiling point elevation.
5. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION CONTROL - Importance of environment, Damages due to
environmental pollution, environmental acts in India; Sampling of wastewater: physical,
chemical and biological characteristics, types of water pollutants, treatments of effluents,
Sludge treatment and disposal; Classification of air pollutants, effects of air pollution,
control methods for particulates, gaseous pollutants; Pollution abatement equipment
used in Process industries (pulp and paper, distillery, textile, and cement).
7. MASS TRANSFER OPERATIONS – Diffusion: diffusion in liquid, gas, and solids; theories of
mass transfer; Gas-liquid operations: types of the column, types of pickings, comparison
between the plate and packed column; Crystallization: factor governing nucleation and
crystal growth, equipment; Drying: definitions, constant and falling rate period, drying
rate curve. Adsorption: adsorption isotherm, single and multistage crosscurrent, and
counter-current operation. Absorption: solvent selection, material balance, multistage
absorption, design of packed towers. Distillation: simple and flash distillation. Multistage
rectification; design using the McCabe Thiele method.
10. PROCESS EQUIPMENT DESIGN – General design considerations and design of equipment
which includes details of process design of Shell and tube heat exchangers, Condenser,
Evaporators, Distillation column, Packed bed distillation column, Absorption column, and
Rotary dryer.
