Formative B n C

Objective: In this investigation, students will assess the impact of surface

friction on the time taken by cars to travel distance (distance is fixed). They will
identify and understand the concepts of independent, dependent, and control
variables, formulate hypotheses, and provide reasoning for their hypotheses.

Materials:
 Toy cars (e.g., matchbox cars)
 Different types of surfaces (e.g., smooth floor, formic sheet, chart paper)
 Measuring tape or ruler
 Stopwatch or timer
 Notebook and pen

Instructions:
 Place the toy car at the same starting point.
 Apply an initial force to the cars and release them simultaneously.
 Use a stopwatch to measure time taken by the car to travel distance traveled
by each car.
 Repeat the experiment at least thrice for each surface to get more accurate
and precise data.
 Calculate the average time taken by the cars to travel distance for each
surface.

Q-1 Identify the independent variable? (Criteria B, 1-2)

Q-2 Identify the dependent variable? (Criteria B, 1-2)

Q-3 Identify the control variables? (Criteria B 1-2)

Q-4 Outline and explain a testable hypothesis using correct scientific reasoning?
(Criteria B 7–8)

Record the data in the table below,

Q-5 Explain how the independent variable can be changed and how to measure the
effect of the dependent variable? (iii, 3-4)

Q-7 Plot a graph of the distance travelled by the car on the different types of
surfaces. (Criteria C 3-4)
