[Enrile states that, “proposed the establishment of the nuclear plant which was

derailed by Cory Aquino because of her anger and revenge”]

According to words of Mr. Enrile, he states that the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, which was
derailed, was because of Former President Cory Aquino’s anger and revenge against the Marcos
regime. But before taking these words into consideration let us take a look back in history.

According to Vera Files, the construction of Bataan Nuclear Power Plant or BNPP for short
began in 1976. It was supposedly a solution to the oil crisis in 1970. they aimed to lower the
country’s dependence on imported oil and to be an alternative for energy source in Luzon. In
1979, An accident occurred in Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant in Pennsylvania. Because of this,
numerous concerns about the Bataan Nuclear Plant started to begin. That is why a commission
was created to re-examine and investigate the nuclear plant. According to a report of
Commission on Nuclear Reactor Plants, it is stated that the plant had “inadequate safeguards
and could be a potential hazard to the health and safety of the public.” The construction of the
plant was halted but was resumed immediately after having an agreement with Westinghouse
to aid in safety requirements and features. In 1986, The Marcos Regime was finally over, and
Cory Aquino took over presidency. According to the World Nuclear Association, at the same
time in 1986 while Bataan Nuclear Plant is still inoperative, A disaster occurred in Chernobyl
Powerplant in Russia which was caused by catastrophic power increase resulting in core
explosions and open-air fires. Because of this Former President Cory Aquino took action and
decided not to operate the plant.

In conclusion, the Bataan Nuclear Plant was stopped not because of revenge, but because of
the danger and risks that it carries.
