Background and Content:


The purpose of this assignment is to help the students to understand the theory of instruments and
the students can explore the connections of lessons during lecture classroom with this assignment.
To accomplish these goals, this assignment has 2 situations.

Explore Your World (100 marks)


This section has been divided into 2 situations. You need to give the suggestion and propose
the methods (including analysis methods) and results (hypothesis) of the samples given from
the industries. You need to prepare a simple report. The template of the report will be
uploaded in VLE.

Learning Outcomes:
The learning outcome (CLO) is CLO1 and will assess your cognitive domain on top of this CLO.

Grading:
The marks have been attributed to each situation.

Assignment submission:
All complete assignments need to be submitted through VLE using Microsoft words or PDF format.

Other things to note:


Kindly put or paste your name, ID number and signature (e-signature) in your assignment documents.
This is grouping activities (2 or 3 students/group only).

Requirement/Tasks:

1. Review and select ONE industrial situation as one of your projects.


2. Describe and write the analysis and testing conducted using one analytical equipment related to
quality test of the samples.
3. Summarize what you have learned from the project writing.

Explore Your World (100 marks)

Situation 1: Sample confirmation (50 marks)

You receive a job order from a company to analyse their samples. The job number is
AOC/2020/0001. The company X-2015 claims that their three products of slimming tea do
not contain caffeine.

As preliminary studies, you already analyse all samples and the results have been shown in
Figure 1, Figure 2 and Figure 3, respectively. The samples have been labelled Sample Tea A,
Sample Tea B and Sample Tea C.

Instructions
1. Propose the equipment used for this analysis.
2. Interpret the data obtained (in figures) to determine whether the samples contain
caffeine or not.
3. Give a detailed explanation of the results obtained. You may find any sources or results
(from google) to support your proposal/suggestion.
4. Provide a conclusion of the results of the analysis to the customer.

Situation 2: Heavy metals contamination in Malaysian coastal (50 marks)

You receive a batch of samples taken from Malaysian coastal located in West Port, Klang. It
reported that the samples received have high mercury contamination (Hg) in West Port, Klang.
You need to determine the mercury concentration in the batches of sample.

The results are shown on the table below.
