General Examination

1. Explain the procedure to the patient


2. Take a permission from a patient
3. Wash your hand
4. Worm your hands
5. Stand on the patient right side of the patient
6. Examine the patient in a good light & warm surrounding

 General looking if the patient comfortable


7. Assess the general appearance:
 Physical built (average, overweight, underweight)

8. Examine hands for character and rash of skin


 Inspect the dorsal then the palmar aspect of the hand
 Skin changes (ulceration, hyperkeratosis)
 Temperature (cold, warm)
 Color (palmar erythema)
 Excessive sweeting
 Muscle wasting
 Tremors
 Nails (clubbing, koilonychias, leuconychiea, dystrophies)

9. Examine FACE AND HEAD for:


 Facial appearance (expression)
 Complexion, color (pallor, cyanosis, jaundice)
 Hair distribution scalp and eye browse, hirsutism)
 Eye : Conjunctiva (pallor), Sclera (jaundice), Cornea (opacities)
 Shape of nose, Working ala nasi, Nasal discharge
 Ear shape and discharge
 Lymph node examination: sub-mental, submandibular, pre-auricular, post-
auricular, occipital. (Consistency, Tenderness, mobility)

10.Examine mouth & throat for:
 Breath (abnormal odor)
 Lips (cyanosis, pallor, cracking)
 Teeth (caries, loosening, discoloration)
 Gums (Pigmentation, bleeding, hypertrophy)
 Tongue (color, papillary atrophy, tremors)
 Buccal mucosa (pigmentation, inflammation)
 Palate (deformities, vesicles)
 Salivation (excessive salivation)
 Tonsils (inflammation)

11.Examine the neck


 Trachea central
 Examine cervical lymph nodes, supraclavicular lymph nodes (Consistency,
Tenderness, mobility)
 Notice any swelling

12.Examine lower extremities for:


 Skin changes
 Pedal Edema
 Examine peripheral pulsation (dorsalis pedis, posterior tebial)
 Examine inguinal lymph nodes (Consistency, Tenderness, mobility)

13.Document the results in the patient’s notes

14.Cover the patient, explain your findings to the patient and thank him
