ACTIVITY 2. “THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL”

Your school is participating in a science project together with a

school in Sweden. This week your Swedish partners, Leo and Norah,
are visiting you at school and you have to prepare a presentation
together. Norah has told you to check the NASA and National
Geographic webpages on global warming and climate change because
she thinks it could be a good topic for your project.
This is the information you find there (texts 1, 2, and 3):

GLOBAL WARMING: GET ALL THE FACTS YOU NEED

TO KNOW
For the past two hundred years, oil,
gas, and coal have powered* homes,
cars, and factories. These energy
sources release a gas called carbon
dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.
This gas traps heat into the Earth’s
atmosphere and, as a result, the Image from pixabay.com

planet becomes warmer.

That’s why many scientists say that Earth is warming as a consequence

of human activity. Through careful study, they know that the climate is
warming about 10 times faster than in previous warming times.

Earth’s temperature has increased about 1.5 °C in the past hundred

years. It doesn’t sound like much, but it has caused melting glaciers,
deforestation and desertification. Scientists are worried that the climate
could warm between 0.3 °C and 5 °C by the year 2100 and this could
cause many natural disasters.

GLOSSARY:
*to power: to supply with electricity or other means of energy. En català significa
‘subministrar energia’.

CLIMATE CHANGE: WHAT COULD HAPPEN?

Climate change has more
consequences than just a higher
temperature. Some places will
receive more rainfall, and it
could lead to flooding, while
other places will get less rain Image from climate.nasa.gov

and become deserts. Glaciers and polar ice melt and flow into the
oceans. More water in the oceans will make the sea level higher and
that could push people out of their homes.

Hundreds of animal and plant species have already experienced

changes because of climate change. Some animals may die or become
extinct because temperatures become too warm for them. Other
species will benefit from a warmer world, but in some cases that would
be bad news for humans. For example, mosquitoes that can carry
diseases live in warm, wet weather. If Earth warms, they can infect
more people with illnesses such as malaria.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

You can do a lot! It’s simple to make a
difference to keep Earth healthy.

Your daily activities like turning on the

lights, using the fridge, driving a car or
eating meat produce carbon emissions
that affect the planet. The areas with

the most impact on climate change are
food & drink, energy, transport and waste.

If you want to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide you add to the
atmosphere, you can try some of these tips:

ACTIVITY 3. “WHAT ACTIONS ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE?”

WRITING
Norah, your exchange partner from Sweden,
was at school with you last week. You
worked very hard on your science project.
You read a lot of information on global
warming and on different tips to save Earth
from climate change. Now Norah is back in her country.
You have also received this information from your teacher in the
school chat:

Hola! Les fotos de grup amb els estudiants de l’intercanvi amb

l’escola de Suècia han quedat molt bé! Aviat les rebreu.

Write an email to Norah:

• Tell her the actions you are going to take at home and at school to
reduce your carbon emissions.
• Give her the message from your teacher about the photos.
Write between 80 and 90 words.
Plan your writing:
1. Write a first draft. Remember the structure of an email, and
the content you must include. Try to use a variety of structures
and vocabulary.
2. Check that your message is clear and revise your work on
grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
3. Write the final version and write the number of words at the end.
