3.2. Syntactico-semantic properties of Adverbials

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Read sections 8:1-11 from Set Readings & section “3.1. Adverbials: introduction” from handout.

Using the examples below as Corpus,

1. Find 8 Adverbials and specify their formal realization (AdvP, PP, Cl, NP, etc.).

2. Find 3 Adverbs/Adverb Phrases that are NOT Adverbials.

3. Find 3 Adverbials occurring in each of the following positions:


• (I)nitial = before the subject; variant: Absolute Initial = before the whole clause
• (M)edial = between subject and verb;
• (F)inal = after the verb, object or complement; variant: Absolute Final: after the whole clause

4. Find 3 Adverbials illustrating each of the following categories


• Adverbials functioning at same level than other clause constituents (S, P, O)
• Adverbials rather detached from the rest of the clause
• Adverbials syntactically subordinated to some other clause constituent

5. Find 5 Adverbials performing each of the following logico-semantic functions:


• expressing circumstantial information about the main predication
• expressing speaker’s evaluation or comments on the clause
• linking the clause (or part of it) to other clauses (or parts of it)
