Euclid Police/officer Derbin Statement 04-29-2025
Statement 04-29-2025
On May 11th, 2024, heroic Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin was murdered in the line of duty. Jacob spent the very
final moments of his life selflessly protecting others. His murder left his family, loved ones, fellow Officers, and the
community in shock and disbelief.
On that tragic date Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer made the decision to formally request that the Ohio Attorney Gen-
eral’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) investigate Jacob’s death and the actions of Officers on scene that evening.
At that time the suspect was still at large. There were multiple reasons for this decision. First, having an outside agency
investigate would allow EPD officers to assist in apprehending the suspect. Second, engaging an outside and independ-
ent agency ensured fairness, transparency, and impartiality in the official investigations. Finally, by requesting BCI’s
involvement, Chief Meyer showed compassion to his fellow Officers by not burdening them with the unimaginable re-
sponsibility of investigating the horrific murder of one of their own.
Until today, the Euclid Police Department has refrained from releasing a detailed statement in order to avoid any possi-
ble interference or tainting of BCI’s critical work. The investigation has now been completed and a report has been
filed. The cause of Officer Derbin’s death and the actions of EPD Officers that fateful night are not in question. Based
on the findings of both BCI and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, there is no evidence to suggest that
anyone other than the suspect was responsible for Jacob’s death. Last week, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office present-
ed their findings to a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury who returned a no-bill, exonerating EPD Officers of any wrong-
doing.
There has been no effort by the EPD to obscure the facts surrounding Jacob’s murder. We have fully cooperated with all
outside investigators. The City of Euclid has also fulfilled massive public record requests filed by multiple individuals
and entities, including the Derbin family. This included providing the family, upon their insistence, with horrific unre-
dacted body and dash-mounted camera footage, including that from Officer Derbin’s own body worn camera.
The Euclid Police Department will not engage in any debate regarding the validity of the findings. With the closure of
the investigation, a new stage in the healing process can hopefully begin. An important piece of this process includes
our participation in Police Week ceremonies both locally and in our nation’s Capital where both our community and
country can honor the lives of fallen Officers. For it is together, among peers, friends, and family where we will share
our love and grief and summon the will to continue our important work; never forgetting that some made the ultimate
sacrifice in the service of others.
