SCHOLASTIC TRIUMPHS AT ATENEO DE
MANILA (1872-1877)
JESUITS SYSTEM OF EDUCATION
Besides the degree of bachelor of arts,also offered vocational courses in
agriculture,commerse,mechanics and surveying.
Roman empire-red banner and carthagian empire-blue banner
the uniform consisted of hemp-fabric trousers and striped cotton coat-made of rayadillo
became famous for it and adopt as a uniform for the filipino troops during the days of first
Philippines Republic.

RIZAL ENTER ATENEO(JUNE 10 1872)
Rizal accompanied by Paciano,to manila for the enrollment on College of San Juan
De Letran

His father change mind and enrolled again to Ateneo De Manila.

Rizal return to manila with Paciano to enrolled in Ateneo De Manila but there
was problem.
FIRST YEAR IN ATENEO (1872-1873)
Rizal first professor in the Ateneo was Fr. Jose Bech.
he was a bottom of the classeven he know slightly the spanish,hence
he was assigned to the carthagian empire occupying the end of the
line.
after a week, he was progressed rapidly,and at the end of month he
became emperor of the carthagian empire. also he won first price “a
religious picture”.
Rizal took spanish private lesson in Santa Isabel College.
In second half of his first year in ateneo,rizal did not try hard to
retain his academic supremacy.
SUMMER VACATION (1873)
at the end of school year 1873, Rizal return to calamba
to cheer himself. His sister SATURNINA, he brought to tanawan with
her but didnt work.
Rizal went to santa cruz to her mother in jail. Without telling his father.
he told her about the achievement that he won on first year and also
about the excellent grades.
after the summer vacation he transfer boarding house inside of
intramuros. His landlady was an old widow named Dona pepay who
has widowed daughter and 4 sons.
SECOND YEAR IN ATENEO (1873-1874)
nothing happen during the second year in ateneo but he neglected to his first year
because he was offended by the teacher’s remark, therefore he study hard and he
become again emperor
Rizal received excellent grades in all subject and won gold medal. he triumphantly
returned to calamba in March 1874.

THIRD YEAR IN ATENEO (1874-1875)


Rizal returned to ateneo for his junior year, shortly the opening of
class her mother arrived and joyously told him that she was released
from prision just like that rizal dreamed. Rizal happy about the news.
despite of the happiness, he did not make excellent in his studies.His
grade remained excellent and won only medal in latin and failed to
win in spanish because spanish was not fluently sonorous.
Rizal returned to calamba and he himself was not impressed by his
scholastic work.
FOURTH YEAR IN ATENEO (1875-1876)
June 16 1875, he bacame interno in ateneo
One of his professor Fr. Francisco de Paula sanchez, a great educator and scholar in ateneo
Rizal inspired to his professor to study hard and write a poetry.
Fr. Sanchez, rizal considered to be his best professor in the ateneo.
Inspired by father sanchez,rizal continue to his studies with vigor and zest.
The result: he top all his classmates in all subject and won five medals at the end of school
term.
LAST YEAR IN ATENEO (1876-1877)
June 1876, Rizal returned to ateneo for his last year in the ateneo.
Continue to be top of his class, as a matter of fact, He is the most brilliant Atenean of
his time, he was truly “the pride of the Jesuits”

GRADUATION WITH HIGHEST HONORS


Rizal graduated at the head of his class,with scholastic records at
ateneo from 1872-1877.
On commencement Day March 23 1877, Received from alma
mater, ateneo municipal, the degree of bachelor of arts, with
highest honors.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN ATENEO
Rizal was active in any activity outside of ateneo
from active member he became secretary of a religious society outside of campus.
The marian Congregation,he is one of the member not only to his academic but it is also of his devotion to
our Lady of the Immaculate conception,The college of Patroness.
Member of academy spanish literature and natural science.
Jose cultivated his literacy talent under the advice of father sanchez, even the father jose vilaclara, stop
rizal for his talent and focuse to philosophy and natural science but rizal didnt listen instead he continue
his passion of writing.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN ATENEO


Rizal devoted to fine arts
he studied painting under the famous Agustine Saez -spanish painter - Romualdo de jesus -
sculpture
Additionally,gymnastic and fencing
Under Tio Manuel, he began physical training with him
Rizal carved the Virgin Mary on a piece of batikuling.
therefore some professor in ateneo amazed what rizal talent even father lleonart amazed
what rizal carved,he requested to carved the Heart of Jesus after, after day and the heart
of jesus finish, except of the father amazed he intended to take spain but being absent of
the father mind he forgot to do so.
POEMS WRITTEN IN ATENEO
1875, inspired by Father Sanchez he wrote poems as such:

1876, he wrote poems on topics such as religion, education,


childhood memories, and war
