GUIDELINES FOR PAPER 3 –ORAL EXAM

GUIA PARA EL EXAMEN ORAL

For the oral exam, students are encouraged not just to do the practice questions that they are
given, but to try and get a good grasp of the language in general so that their responses will not
be rehearsed, but will be spontaneous due to their wide knowledge of the Spanish language. The
CSEC Spanish orals is done in three(3) parts; Oral Reading Passage, Responses to Situations and
Instructions and Conversation. The exam will last for a period of thirty (30) minutes. You will
have fifteen 15 minutes for preparation and a maximum of fifteen (15) minutes to be examined.
In the oral exam the Responses to Oral Situation and Instructions will be examined first.
● There are five (5) questions in this examination which have two (2) parts each; parts A
and B.
● Each question is examined as a whole, and not as two parts.
● You are expected to provide a suitable response for each part of the situation. Your

 answer may not be in a complete sentence but we encourage you to use sentences as
much as possible)
● The examiner will then grade you according to the guidelines stipulated by the Caribbean
Examination Council.
● You will then be required to read aloud the Reading Passage.
● You are expected to read fluently.
● It is suggested that the Reading does not exceed one (1) minute but must be clear and
comprehensible.
● Remember to use your preparation time to break up big or unknown words. This will help
in the fluency of your delivery of the passage.
● The last part of the oral examination is the Conversation. In the conversation you will
be expected to respond to a maximum of sixteen (16) questions in Spanish.
● These questions will be taken from the themes in your syllabus.
● The conversation will be graded: fluency, grammar and appropriateness of response.
At the end of the exam the examiner will inform you that the exam has ended and you are free to
leave.
● Attempt ALL questions and remember not to give a one word answer for example sí or
no. Give reasons with those answers. Porque….
NOTE: EXAMINERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DISCLOSE YOUR PERFORMANCE
(TELL YOU OR YOUR TEACHER HOW WELL YOU HAVE DONE).

ACTIVIDADES PRÁCTICAS QUE RECOMENDAMOS

PRACTISE READING AND RECORDING YOURSELF. When you listen to yourself

read, it will give you an opportunity to identify where you have mispronounced words and
make the necessary corrections. When preparing the reading passage, it is advisable to read
aloud in order to better familiarize yourself with the pronunciations. At this point you could
practise reading in the 1 minute base time as well.

BECOME FAMILIAR WITH WORDS FROM EACH CATEGORY OF THE ORALS.

For example, learn how to say certain public places like church, school, library. Know the
difference between library and bookstore! Get comfortable describing places and people. Tip:
use at least two adjectives when describing.

KNOW THE QUESTION WORDS AS THESE WILL BE USED IN MOST OF THE

QUESTIONS!

 Be familiar with vocabulary items from all six categories. Expressions such as crees que... and
piensas que... are good ones with which to become familiar.

PAY SPECIFIC ATTENTION TO VERBS AND GRAMMAR that can be used to talk
about activities you do on the weekend, after school, during lunch break. Tip: think of words
that can be used in any of those situations to limit the number you have to study if you are
having difficulties.

Know breakfast items different from items for lunch/dinner.

Be prepared to discuss your daily routines for weekdays as well as weekends.

Knowing grammar such as present, future imperative (commands) and subjunctive are useful
for this exam.

Know the difference between STATING THE TIME and stating AT WHAT TIME
something is done. You may never need to state the time in the oral exam so just know that
you will always only need to use A LA/LAS.

PRACTISE YOUR VOWEL SOUNDS and KNOW LETTERS that can have different sounds
when combined with different vowels: eg. CIUDAD vs CUIDADO; GENTE vs GATO.
