Solutions of a Linear Equation

■ Ordered pairs that make the equation true
To determine if a given ordered pair is a
solution:

1. Replace the variables in the equation

with the corresponding coordinates.
2. Verify that the equation is true.
Solutions of a Linear Equation
Determine if the given ordered pair is a solution of x + 3y = 8.
a. (2, 2) b. (-2, -2)

a. Substitute 2 for x and 2 b. Substitute -2 for x and -2

for y. for y.
x + 3y = 8 x + 3y = 8
2 + 3(2) = 8 -2 + 3(-2) = 8
2+6=8 -2 - 6 = 8
8 = 8 True -8 = 8 False
Therefore, (2,2) is a solution Therefore, (-2,-2) is not a
solution
Solutions of a Linear Equation
Determine if the given ordered pair is a solution of x + 3y = 8.
c. (-1, 3)
c. Substitute -1 for x and 3
for y.
x + 3y = 8
-1+ 3(3) = 8
-1 + 9 = 8
8 = 8 True
Therefore, (-1, 3) is a
solution
Solutions of a Linear Equation
Determine if the given ordered pair is a solution of
x + 4y = 7.

1. (3, 1)
2. (-1, 2)
3. (2, -1)
Solutions of a Linear Equation
Complete each ordered pair so that each is a solution of the
equation 2x + 3y =12
a. (3, ?) a. If x = 3,then b. If y = 0,then
b. (?, 0) 2x + 3y =12 2x + 3y =12
2(3) + 3y = 12 2x + 3(0) = 12
6 + 3y =12 2x + 0 =12
3y = 12 - 6 2x = 12
3y = 6 2𝑥 12

Solutions of a Linear Equation

Finding the solutions of a Linear Equation

1. Choose a value for one of the variables (any
value).
2. Replace the corresponding variable with your
chosen value.
3. Solve the equation for the value of the other
variable.
Solutions of a Linear Equation
Note:
- You can list the solutions in a table of values
- There is an infinite number of correct
solutions for a given equation in two variables.
