14191_WEEK 8 LESSON 1

The lesson focuses on the sum of angles in polygons, specifically targeting J S S 2G, 2H & 2I students. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to calculate angles in triangles and quadrilaterals, as well as identify regular and non-regular polygons. The lesson includes interactive activities, evaluations, and assignments to reinforce the concepts learned.

WEEK 8, Lesson 1

DATE: 27Th February, 2023

SUBJECT: Mathematics

THEME: Geometry

TOPIC: Sum of angles in polygons

TIME: (8:40 – 9:20, 9:20 – 10:00, 10:30 – 11:10) am

DURATIONS: 40 Minutes

CLASS: J S S 2G, 2H & 2I

NO IN CLASS: 102, 96 & 97 respectively

AVERAGE AGE: 12 Years

SEX: Mixed

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;

i. Calculate, name and calculate angles meeting at a point

ii. Calculate angles in triangles and quadrilateral
iii. Identify and name regular and non- regular polygons up to 10 sides.

RATIONALE: The learning of sum of angles in polygons helps the students in measurement
and geometrical works.

PRE- REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE: The students were taught plane shapes in their previous lesson.

LEARNING MATERIALS: Charts of Algebraic polygons, Flash cards with sum of interior angles formular
e.g ( n-2 x 180) where n is equal to no of sides in the polygon
New General Mathematics J S S 2, Global Success Mathematics J S S 2,
Students, teacher, whiteboard and marker

LESSON DEVELOPMENT

INTRODUCTION:

MODE: Entire Class

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES: The teacher introduces the lesson by reviewing the previous lesson.

STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES: The students participate actively in the lesson.

STEP 1:

MODE: Entire Class

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES: He names and identify polygon using the polygons chart to explain
STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES: They listen attentively to the teacher.

STEP 2:

MODE: Entire Class

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES: He talks about the sum of the interior angles of a triangle

An Interior Angle is an angle inside a shape

Triangles
The Interior Angles of a Triangle add up to 180°

80° + 70° + 30° = 180°

Quadrilaterals (Squares, etc)

(A Quadrilateral has 4 straight sides)
Let's try a square:

90° + 90° + 90° + 90° = 360°

A Square adds up to 360°

STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES: They listen attentively to the teacher and state the sum of the angles stated
above
STEP 3:

MODE: Entire Class

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES: He explains further, The Interior Angles of a Quadrilateral add

up to 360°

Because there are 2 triangles in a square ...

The interior angles in a triangle add up to 180° ...

... and for the square they add up to 360° ...

The General Rule

Each time we add a side (triangle to quadrilateral, quadrilateral to pentagon, etc), we add another
180° to the total:
If it is a Regular Polygon (all sides
are equal, all angles are equal)
Sum of
Shape Sides Shape Each Angle
Interior Angles

Triangle 3 180° 60°

Quadrilateral 4 360° 90°

Pentagon 5 540° 108°

... ... .. ... ...

Any Polygon n (n−2) × 180° (n−2) × 180° / n

STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES: They listen attentively and participate actively in the lesson.

EVALUATION:
MODE: Entire Class

Find the interior angles of the following regular polygons

1. Hexagon
2. octagon
STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES: They solve the questions given on the white board.
CONCLUSION:
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES: He goes round the class to guide the weak students. He
marks their works and writes corrections on the board.
STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES: They submit their works for marking and write the
corrections.
ASSIGNMENTS: Find the sum of the interior angles of the following illustrating with a diagram:
1. Pentagon
2. Nonagon.
