Under the Waves


Have you ever wondered how it feels to ride in a submarine? This kind of boat
can go under the water. The captain makes it go left or right. He makes it go up
and down. Some submarines can dive down to the bottom of the sea.
There are many kinds of submarines. Some are very big. Others are small.
Some have tall windows for people to look through.
People who ride in submarines can see many beautiful things. They see bright
coral with colors like jelly beans. They see tiny, shiny fish swimming around the
coral. They see great sea animals like whales. They see sharks and eels.
It is safe inside the submarine. There is enough air for the people to breathe.
The air is not too warm or too cold. The people inside have food to eat. Those
who go on long trips even have places to sleep!
Submarines help us to learn about the wonders of the sea. They show us
parts of the sea that other boats cannot.

Boing! The basketball bounced off the rim of the hoop.
“I almost made it that time,” Jamie said. She looked at the hoop and threw the
ball. It flew way over the hoop and landed on the neighbor’s lawn.
The sun was hot on the driveway. Jamie wiped her forehead.
Jamie’s mother saw her through the kitchen window. She saw that Jamie
looked sad. “Do you want some lemonade?” she called.
“Yes, please,” Jamie answered. She felt tired. The lemonade was cold and
sweet. “I’ll never make a basket!” Jamie moaned.
“Keep trying, honey,” her mother said. “If you keep trying, you will do it.”
Back on the driveway, Jamie tried again. “I can do it,” she said to herself. She

ball. Up, up it went. It tapped the rim and then slowly rolled through the hoop.
“I did it!” Jamie shouted and clapped. “I made a basket at last!”

So is birthday cake! Eating together is one way that people enjoy the party.

Many birthday parties have music. Some have dancing, too. Many people

Players take turns wearing a blindfold. They stick a paper tail on a picture of a

READ THE PASSAGE Picture what a coconut looks like.

A coconut is a great big seed. It does not look like much on the outside. It is
round and brown. It seems like a strange kind of ball. But the coconut is full of
surprises. It is used in many different ways.
The little hairs on the outside of a coconut are used to make rope, sacks, and
doormats. People use the shells to make bowls and buttons. They also burn these
shells to help keep bugs away! Oil from the nuts is used for cooking. It is also
used to make soap.
A coconut is hard to open. It is hollow on the inside. It is filled with sweet water.
This water is good to drink. The inside wall of the coconut is white like snow. It is
very good to eat. It is used to make pies and other treats. The palm tree that
coconuts grow on is useful, too. People make brooms and baskets from different
parts of the leaves.
Coconut palms use the sea to spread their seeds. The nuts float across the
water. The seeds grow into new trees on land far away.

Teamwork
Ants can do all kinds of work. Some find food. Others carry it. Some dig nests.
Some ants work to keep the nest safe. Others keep it clean. Ants take care of their
eggs. They feed their babies. Ants can do these things and more because they
work in teams.
Ants leave trails that the others can smell. They leave trails to lead other ants
to food. If a path is blocked, ants leave trails to show the others where to go. They
also leave trails that tell other ants that a place is no longer safe.
Some people do not like ants. If ants come into your house and your parents
do not like it, try this trick. Put a little bit of sugar outside. The ants will be busy
with the sugar. They will stop looking for food in your house. The ants will be
happy. Your parents will be happy, too!
