Minimum Pilot Requirements for Checkout

❏ 80 hours total in airplane
❏ 3 hours in type
❏ 10 takeoffs and landings

GROUND REVIEW
High Performance Engine
❏ C182 has a 230 hp engine
❏ “High Performance” because it is >200 hp, so high performance endorsement required
❏ 6 cylinders
❏ More torque, avoid abrupt power changes, use adequate rudder coordination
❏ Heavy nose – more elevator pressure to lighten nose on T/O & flare
❏ Left-turning tendency on takeoff roll, go-around, and stall recovery

Constant Speed Propeller

❏ Hydraulically actuated
❏ High RPM for high power
❏ Low RPM for cruise efficiency
❏ Because of prop, power set using manifold pressure gauge instead of tachometer
❏ In engine-out emergencies, set to low RPM (better windmilling, less drag)

Engine Management
❏ Cowl flaps for added engine cooling (more power = more heat output)
❏ Cowl flaps normally closed, open when extra cooling is needed
❏ Typically open for engine start, surface taxi, takeoff, climb, and go-around
❏ Typically closed for cruise and descent
❏ Use mixture to manage EGTs, cowl flaps to manager CHTs
❏ Power up order: prop before throttle (right to left)
❏ Power down order: throttle before prop (left to right)

❏ Takeoff
❏ Climb
❏ Cruise
❏ Landing

Weight and Balance Limitations

❏ May have different maximum gross weights for ramp, takeoff, and landing
❏ Baggage weight limitations may be divided by storage areas
❏ Four seats does not guarantee 4-person carrying capacity

SCFC Feb 22, 2020

FLIGHT TRAINING PORTION

At the Aircraft / Preflight Inspection

❏ Higher ramp weight may be too heavy to tow/push by oneself
❏ Propeller: check security and for red oil leaks
❏ Cowl flaps open during preflight to test operation
❏ Rudder trim tab and control
❏ Wing tie-down hooks may be spring-loaded to stow in upper wing strut fairing
❏ Oil door is on top of engine cowling and may be hard to reach. Use care to position funnel
into filler neck to service oil without spilling. Do not force dipstick.
❏ Stall horn may be electric, requiring power must be on to check operation
❏ Aircraft cover, use caution to keep soft side from touching ground or debris to avoid
scratching windscreen surface

Cockpit Familiarization
❏ Front panel and engine cowling are larger than C172, pilots may need to adjust sight
picture for ground ops, takeoff, and flare
❏ Propeller control
❏ Rudder trim control
❏ Cowl flaps control
❏ Verifies safe operation of electrical system before and after start

Start (use SCFC Checklist)

❏ Cowl flaps open
❏ Propeller control full forward = high RPM

Taxi
❏ Initial contact with Ground Control
❏ Verify pilot knowledge of SQL departure procedures
❏ Verify pilot understands and complies with taxi instructions
❏ Cowl flaps

Runup (use SCFC Checklist)

❏ Cycle prop 3x: rpm drop, oil pressure drop, manifold pressure increase
❏ Rudder trim to takeoff

Takeoff #1
❏ Tower communication for departure
❏ Power up right to left
❏ Mixture rich, propeller forward, throttle full
❏ Heavier controls require more pressure

SCFC Feb 22, 2020
