Question 1

A thin disc of mass m and radius R is rigidly connected to slender member

Complete OC of length L . Member OC is perpendicular to the plane of disc, makes an
Marked out of angle θ with the horizontal and has negligible inertia. The disc rolls without
20.00 slipping on the ground. The system comprising of member OC and disc
rotates about the vertical axis passing through fixed material point O with
constant angular velocity ω0 . Calculate the following quantities at the instant
shown.

(a) (5 marks) The components of angular velocity of the disc in fixed frame,
ω|F , with respect to e1̂ , e2̂ and e3̂ axes
(b) (5 marks) The components of angular acceleration of the disc in fixed
frame, ω̇|F , with respect to e1̂ , e2̂ and e3̂ axes
(c) (10 marks) The components of resultant force and couple applied at
point O on the disc plus member OC system with respect to e1̂ , e2̂ and e3̂
axes

Question 2 The forces, in members DG and FI of the truss shown below, has been
Complete calculated using the method of sections

Marked out of
10.00
Solution:

∑ MF = 0: FDG (4 m ) - (5 kN)(3 m) = 0
∴ FDG = +3.75 kN
∑ Fy = 0: -3.75 kN - FFI = 0
∴ FFI = -3.75 kN

a) When two (or more) members are connected by a pin, it is does not matter
in which member the pin is taken. However, it is considered more efficient to
to take the pin as part of a multi-force member. Discuss this in the context of
the truss in this question. [2 Marks]
b) Using diagrams, and compulsorily in your own words, explain why is the
action of constraint at J (in reality a gusset plate, idealized as a smooth pin
joint) on members JH, JG and JK modelled as only a force? In other words,
why is the gusset plate joint not modeled as a rough pin joint? [4 Marks]
c) Using a diagram (compulsory!), point out the number of b rigid bars which
are connected at j joints with c foundation constraints, in this truss. (Please
mark joints and bars with arrow) [1+1+2 marks]

Question 3
(This question is lengthy and slightly difficult than others. Note that this is a
Complete three dimensional problem involving impact of two rigid bodies)
Marked out of A spherical ball of radius R and mass m1 rolls without slipping on a flat
20.00 horizontal surface and has a smooth impact with a stationary bowling pin of
mass m2 . The velocity of the centre of mass C1 of the ball before impact is
constant, v1 = v0 i ,̂ in fixed frame. The bowling pin is axisymmetric with
centre of mass at point C2 and principal moments I1 about the vertical axis
along k̂ and I2 about a horizontal axis. The position vector of point C2 with
respect to C1 is, r C2 C1 = Len̂ − bet̂ .

(a) (5 marks) Write expressions for unit vectors et̂ , en̂ and eb̂ in terms of unit
vectors i ,̂ j ̂ and k̂ .
(b) (5 marks) Calculate the components of angular velocities of the ball and
bowling pin, denoted by ω′1 and ω′2 respectively, after impact, in fixed frame
along unit vectors i ,̂ j ̂ and k̂ .
(c) (10 marks) Calculate the components of velocities of centres of mass, C1
and C2 , denoted by v′1 and v′2 respectively, after impact, in fixed frame along
unit vectors i ,̂ j ̂ and k̂ .

Complete handle AB of negligible weight. The container has length 2L and width 2R in
Marked out of the vertical and horizontal directions.
10.00

(a) (2 marks) Determine the force components Fx , Fy and Q at points D and

B and of the handle as shown in the diagram.
(b) (2 marks) Determine the reaction force and couple at point A where the
handle is rigidly attached to the container.
(c) (3 marks) Determine the shear force, axial force and bending moment
functions for an arbitrary section in part BD of the handle for θ < 30o .
(d) (3 marks) Determine the shear force, axial force and bending moment
functions for an arbitrary section in part DA of the handle for θ > 30o .
