An Embarrassing Act
An Embarrassing Act
intensely
in my heart that it would go in. Everyone in the stands went quiet as the ball bounced,
landed on the rim of the basket, and circled it, slowly inching inwards.
If the ball went in, my team would no longer be down by a point. Instead, we would reclaim
the lead! It was torturous! Just then, a whirlwind of thoughts raced through my mind. Would it
go in? If it did, I would be today’s hero! Oh no! What if it does not? A few seconds felt like
hours. Everyone had their eyes locked on the hoop. Bounce, bounce, drop!
The ball went in! I felt my pants tighten as my teammates huddled around me. In the last few
seconds of the game, I scored and put my team back in the lead. The spectators erupted
into cheers in the stands the opponents were baffled. Their eyes widened in shock as their
faces turn as pale as sheets.
“Match Over! Kong Hwa basketball team wins!” the electronic system sounded as our
opponents dropped their jaws in shock. On the other hand, we were in a state of bliss as our
coach applauded our last-minute shot.
When we went to shake hands with the opponents, most of them congratulated us on the
good game we had. However, some were not so friendly…
“Bam!” That was the sound of me slapping the ground. I had just been shoved onto the
basketball court by one of the members of the opponents’ team. Everyone in the stands
went from cheerful the dead silent. Murmurs could still be heard. I could still remember the
scene as clearly as day.
Jonathan Lee, a big and burly boy, loomed over me threateningly. He was almost twice my
size. Looking at the smirk on his face, it was clear what he wanted --revenge.
“Ahh!” I yelped as I flipped my arms wildly. Losing control of my body, rich rush through me.
Why was he doing that to me come? I thought. Everyone gasped. The referee and coaches
shot severe looks of displeasure toward Jonathan. After which the referee banned him from
participating in the next match.
“Liam! Are you alright?” Andy, my best friend, and teammate waved in my face. Blinking, I
drifted back to reality. Shooting a dirty at Jonathan, I nodded at Liam and retreated into the
changing rooms. By then, anger was coursing through my veins, and you could practically
see smoke billowing out of my ears. “How embarrassing!” I muttered to myself. I did not take
notice that something way more embarrassing would occur at that very moment.
Suddenly, people started rambunctiously and leered at me. “Huh? What is going on now?
They must be admiring my amazing basketball skills!” I muttered to myself. Flexing my
biceps, they relentlessly continued their laughter.
I soon began to wonder what was wrong. Shrugging, I looked into the mirror and realization
sheet me. Blushing with embarrassment, I realized my pants were torn and my underwear
was visible. I did not want to be there and then. Evan, the class clown, was seated right next
to the changing rooms and pointed his fingers at me. “Guys, look! Liam is wearing purple
underwear!”, he yelled.
I was so utterly humiliated that I felt like digging a hole in the ground and not coming out of it.
Tears welled up in my eyes and soon, the floodgates opened. I was an utter joke! In
minutes, I had gone from ‘Most Valuable Player’ to ‘Most Embarrassing Player’. Thankfully,
my teammates were there for me.
Well everyone was sniggering away, some of my teammates console me while others went
to tell the coach, Mr. Smith. Andy was one of them. He told Mr. Smith about the whole
incident. Praising him for doing the right thing, Mr. Smith instructed him to escort me to the
other changing room where there was less of a crowd to change out. Afterward, he stormed
towards the students in the stands who were laughing at me and saw the next line from what
I heard, Mr. Smith rained hell on the students. A severe tongue lashing was dished out along
with the writing of a reflection letter. Meanwhile, in the changing room, while I was digging
through my bag for a new set of clothes, I and the rest of my teammates comforted me like
good friends would. Smiling, I thank all of them for being there when I needed them.
When I came out of the toilet with my teammates a few minutes later, the students
apologised for mocking my demise. Mr. Smith also reminded me to be more self-aware in
the future.
As I was sitting alone on a bench after the match, I thought about what had happened today.
Never have I felt so embarrassed! I thought to myself. I was extremely grateful that I had
friends who were there for me when I needed help and of course, remembered to be more
self-aware in the future.
