Format of a Report (for IELTS Writing Task 1):

Introduction: (1-2 sentences long. NOT MORE!)


- You need to write what you see (Background Statement).
You can use another word for “shows”: “demonstrates” / “illustrates”, “describes.”
The infographic illustrates the amount of goods transported in the United
Kingdom from 1974 to 2002 by four methods (road, water, rail, and
pipeline).
Overview: (You will write a paragraph about the main trends or important points in
the infographic – HIGHEST LABEL, LOWEST LABEL, & TRENDS)

In general, throughout the reported period between 1974 and 2002
transportation of goods by road has been the highest. Conversely,
transportation using the pipeline has been the least. Water and rail
transport started at similar numbers with water increasing as a mode of
transport and rail decreasing.

Transportation of goods by road started at around 70 million tonnes in 1974 while transporting
goods through the pipeline started at approximately 5 million tonnes. Road transportation of
products continued to increase across the reported period to almost 95 million tonnes in 2002.
The pipeline also saw a similar increase of around 20 million tonnes by 2002. Even though both
modes of transporting goods had an almost identical final increase in 2002, road usage stood at
95 million tonnes while the pipeline was used to transport goods of around 25 million tonnes.
The modes of transport for goods by rail and water were almost the same with water behind only
1-2 million tonnes worth of transport in 1974. They both became identical around 1977 at exactly
40 million tonnes. Water transport then saw a sharp increase in its use to transport goods and
maintained its increase until 2002 at around 65 million tonnes. Rail transport saw a different
trend which declined significantly as compared to water transport. The transportation of goods
using the rail declined to its lowest number of almost 26 million tonnes in 1995. It did manage to
increase to reach almost 41 million tonnes in 2002.
