Preface

Preparation for board examinations can be a daunting and overwhelming

process for many of us. As trainees, we are often busy with research
projects, manuscripts, and a large clinical volume, making it difficult to find
time to study for board examinations. As practicing physicians, we find it
hard to keep up on material needed for board recertification.
Questions on the board examinations are drawn from well-established,
validated medical literature and widely accepted clinical guidelines. That
said, the University of Michigan Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program
designed this board review book to summarize information that is most
pertinent for testing. The Oncology Board Review: Blueprint Study Guide
and Q&A, Second Edition expands upon the excellent question-based
review by providing key updates in all chapters that will be reflected in the
medical oncology boards. This book is not intended to be an all-
encompassing review. Rather, it is intended to help summarize the
important facts that one might need to know for his or her examination,
similar to taking notes of pertinent information that one would like to
memorize. We created each chapter to cover all of the topics listed in the
blueprint provided by the American Board of Internal Medicine as material
one should know for the Medical Oncology Board Examination. The authors
have endeavored to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information,
including well-established chemotherapy regimens for a variety of
malignancies. New to this edition, we have also written board review
questions to accompany each chapter, providing over 230 multiple choice
questions with answers and detailed rationales to those seeking practice
questions ahead of their certification or recertification exams.
We hope that fellows and practicing medical oncologists preparing for
their certification or recertification will find Oncology Board Review:
Blueprint Study Guide and Q&A, Second Edition a useful tool. Our goal is to
help our readers summarize and solidify many important clinical facts and
to help them build confidence in their exam preparation about their
knowledge.
As the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program director and the chief
fellow at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan), we engaged our
fellows and faculty to develop Oncology Board Review: Blueprint Study
Guide and Q&A, Second Edition. Each chapter was written by a fellow and
edited by an expert faculty member or an ancillary staff clinician. We
gratefully acknowledge the dedication of our fellows, faculty, and medical
staff. The successful completion of this project was made possible by the
editorial and publishing staff of Demos Medical Publishing, especially David
D’Addona, senior editor, and Joseph Stubenrauch, the managing editor
who moved the project seamlessly through production.
Finally, we dedicate this book to Michelle Reinhold for her continued
devotion and immeasurable service to the University of Michigan
Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program as program coordinator.
