Shear friction design as per ACI318-19

22.9.3.1 Design shear strength across the assumed shear

plane shall satisfy:

ϕVn ≥ Vu (22.9.3.1) Strength reduction factor (phi)

Additional requirements
22.9.4.2 If shear-friction reinforcement is perpendicular to are given in 21.2.4 for
(b) Shear 0.75
structures designed to
the shear plane, nominal shear strength across the assumed resist earthquake effects.
shear plane shall be calculated by:

Vn = μAvf fy (22.9.4.2) Max. fy used for shear friction calculations =420MPa

Shear friction 420

where Avf is the area of reinforcement crossing the assumed Shear
shear plane to resist shear, and μ is the coefficient of friction
in accordance with Table 22.9.4.2.

22.9.4.5 Permanent net compression across the shear

plane shall be permitted to be added to Avf fy, the force in the
shear-friction reinforcement, to calculate required Avf. This provision means that it's allowable to take only one RFT mesh
in calculations of Vn.
22.9.4.6 Area of reinforcement required to resist a net Exception: if a net tension force is applied on the section (As for
factored tension across an assumed shear plane shall be tension must be subtracted from the used mesh As)
added to the area of reinforcement required for shear friction
crossing the assumed shear plane.
Solved example:
E
First obtain the design forces from ETABS using section cut tool and use F2 as the shear friction force.
Use the combinations including overstrength factor (Omega)

G H

Assume using slab mesh T20@150 both ways Top and Bottom and slab thickness of 250mm .
Assume case C for the shear friction factor and fc'= 40MPa.
Calculate phi.Vn.max :

Concrete placed against hardened concrete that

F
is clean, free of laitance, and not intentionally 0.6λ (c) shear friction factor
roughened

Lesser of 0.2fc′Ac (d)

Other cases (d) and Maximum Vn
(e) 5.5Ac (e)

phi.Vn.max= 0.75x0.2x40x1000x250/1000= 1500 KN/m .....(c) Vu to be divided by the core leg length
phi.Vn.max= 0.75x5.5x1000x250/1000= 1031 KN/m .....(d) governs As it is the length of friction plane
phi.Vn= 0.75 x 0.6 x 2093.3 x 420/1000= 395.6 KN/m < 1031 KN/m (OK)

For section cut F:

Vu/L = 5032/6.9= 729 KN/m > 395.6KN/m (need extra RFT)
Vs= 729-395.6= 333.4 KN/m
R22.9.4.2 The required area of shear-friction reinforce-
ment, Avf, is calculated using:

Vu
Avf = (R22.9.4.2)
φf y µ
As=333.4x1000/(420x0.75x.6)= 1764 mm2 = USE T20@150 additional RFT for shear friction on side F.
