LESSON 1: DATA PRIVACY
DATA PRIVACY - refers to how we protect personal information and control who can
access it online.
Privacy - Along with computers and the Internet came a number of tools that invade
privacy at different levels.
- Your school database, for example, contains your age, birthday, address,
telephone number, and your parents names. People who use databases can use
this information.
Privacy and Security Issues on the Internet
1. Cyberbullying - People can use the Internet to hurt or bully others by spreading
rumors or sharing personal details.
2. Identity Theft - This happens when someone steals your personal information, like
your names and credit card number, to impersonate you and steal money or cause
harm.
3. Phishing Scams - Fake emails or messages try to trick you into revealing your
passwords or other sensitive information.
4. Data Breaches - Sometimes, websites or companies get hacked, and personal
information gets exposed to people who shouldn’t have it.
How can your privacy be violated?
● Sharing Personal Information on Social Media
- When you share too much personal information, strangers can find it and use
it against you.
● Using Weak Passwords
- If you don’t have strong passwords, someone might guess them and access
your accounts.
● Clicking on Unknown Links
- Sometimes, clicking on a link in an email or text message can lead to a harmful
website that tries to steal your information.
● Public Wi-Fi Networks
- When you use public Wi-Fi, your data may be exposed to hackers who can see
what you’re doing online.

How to defend against computer attacks
Tip 1: Use Strong Passwords
- Combine letters, numbers, and symbols. Make them long and unique for each
account.
Tip 2: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
- This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second code (sent to your phone)
in addition to your password.
Tip 3: Be Careful with Emails and Links
- Always verify that emails or messages are from trusted sources before clicking on any
links or downloading attachments.
Tip 4: Update your Software Regularly
- Updates often fix security problems that hackers might use to get into your devices.
Tip 5: Use Antivirus Software
- This software helps detect and block harmful programs before they can cause harm.
Protecting your Privacy on Social Media
● Set Privacy Settings - Make sure only people you trust can see your posts and
personal information.
● Don’t Share Too Much Personal Information - Avoid sharing your full name,
address, phone number, or details about your location.
● Be Careful What You Post - Think twice before posting pictures or information that
might reveal too much about you or your friends.
