Question 1
A client requires the refurbishment, including conversion and extension, of the
basement and ground floor of a four-story end-terrace property. The building is
of load-bearing brickwork, with a tile-clad timber roof. The existing ground, 1st
and 2nd floors are timber, and are adequate for the intended purpose, with
floor joists spanning front-to-rear.
Design the timber floor joists for a domestic dwelling supporting 1st floor, using
timber of strength C24. The floor width, b = 6230mm and floor span l =
4300mm. Joists are spaced at 600mm centres. Flooring is tongue and groove
boarding of thickness 21mm and has self-weight of 0.1 KN/m2. Ceiling is of
plasterboard with a self-weight of 0.2KN/m2. The bearing length is 100mm at
each end of the joists.
Question 2
The client has asked for some changes to the scheme handling the above
project as explained below. Discuss how you would change the design of the
beam, what impacts this change will have to the design and what you would
specifically want to check to confirm the adequacy of the beam;
(i) Timber Floor Joists at 1st floor is Simply supported and supports UDL
at full span. Client asks you to ensure the depth of the joist section is
not greater than 150mm to allow greater headroom on the space
below.
(ii) Timber Floor Joists at 1st floor is Simply supported and supports UDL
at full span. Clients changed the usage of the room from domestic to
wedding venue for renting and create an opening to the terrace to
accommodate the usage
(iii) Timber Floor Joist at 1st floor is Simply supported and supports UDL
at full span. Client decides to increase the span from 4300mm to
5000mm and asked you to keep the floor to a depth of 200mm to
ensure headroom below.
Question 3
A timber column in strength class C18 is 4m in height with a rectangular
cross-section of 97mm x 145 mm. The column is restrained at both ends in
position but not in direction and is subjected to service class 2 conditions.
(a) Determine the maximum axial long-term load that the column can support.
(b) Check that the column is adequate to resist a long-term axial load of 12 kN
and a bending moment of 0.8 kNm about its x-x axis.
Question 4
For the design data given below, check that a 100mm x 250mm rough sawn
section, is adequate as a column if the load is applied 90mm eccentric to its x-x
axis. The column is 3.75 m in height and has its ends restrained in position
but not in direction.
Design data:
Timber Whitewood grade SS
Design load (long-term) = 25kN
Design load (medium-term) = 30kN
