Lesson_Plan_Plane_Geometry_Day5_6

The lesson plan focuses on constructing regular polygons and circles within a Technical Drawing Fundamentals course. Students will learn to create polygons with 5 to 8 sides, inscribe and circumscribe polygons within circles, and apply general methods for n-sided polygons. The assessment includes practical drawing tasks, application problems, and a written explanation of construction methods, totaling 40 marks.

Lesson Plan Details

Module/Unit: Plane Geometry

Task: Constructing Regular Polygons and Circles

Reference Materials: Geometry handouts, technical drawing tools, polygon construction

guides

The Specific Objectives:

1. Using manual drawing tools, students will construct regular polygons with 5, 6, 7, and 8
sides, each within 2mm of specified dimensions.
2. Given a circle, students will inscribe and circumscribe 3 different regular polygons, with
angles accurate to within 2°.
3. Students will apply the general method to construct a 9-sided polygon, with sides equal
in length to within 1mm.

Instructional Strategies:
- Demonstrations of construction techniques

- Step-by-step guided practice

- Collaborative peer activities

Equipments/Materials Required:
- Compass, rulers, protractor, set squares

- Polygon templates and worksheets

- Examples of inscribed and circumscribed figures

🔹 Days 5–6: Polygons and Circles – Assessment

🧠 Assessment Type:

 Practical drawing task

 Application-based geometric construction
 Written explanation

🎯 Objectives Assessed:

 Construct regular polygons (5–8 sides) with high precision

 Apply inscribing and circumscribing techniques
 Explain the general method of constructing regular n-sided polygons

✏️Part A: Polygon Construction Test (20 marks)

Instructions:
Using only manual drawing tools (compass, ruler, protractor), construct the following
regular polygons:

 Pentagon (5 sides)
 Hexagon (6 sides)
 Heptagon (7 sides)
 Octagon (8 sides)

Each must be:

 Accurately sized (sides within ±1 mm tolerance)

 Properly labeled
 Drawn using correct geometric construction techniques (no freehand)

Evaluation Criteria (5 marks per shape): | Criterion | Marks |

|------------------------------------|-------| | Correct method used (arcs, angles) | 2 | | Side
accuracy within tolerance | 2 | | Clear linework and labels | 1 |

🟠 Part B: Application Problem – Circle Relationships (10 marks)

Instructions:

1. Given a circle, inscribe a regular hexagon and a square

2. Given a polygon (pentagon), circumscribe a circle around it

Evaluation Criteria: | Task | Marks | |--------------------------------------|-------| | Hexagon

correctly inscribed | 3 | | Square correctly inscribed | 2 | | Circle correctly circumscribed |
3 | | Line quality, layout, labeling | 2 |

✍️Part C: Written Question – General Method for Constructing n-Sided Polygons (10 marks)

Question:
Explain the general steps for constructing a regular polygon with any number of sides
(n), using only a compass and straightedge. Include the use of central angle and radius.

Marking Guide: | Response Element | Marks |

|------------------------------------------------------|-------| | Mentions use of central angle (360°
÷ n) | 2 | | Identifies step-by-step arc/angle method | 4 | | Uses correct terminology (radius,
center, segment) | 2 | | Clear explanation and logical sequence | 2 |
