About the Authors

Mike Brind  spent the first 20 years of his working life in a series of successful sales and marketing
roles, towards the end of which he was introduced to HTML and databases. A dormant inner geek
took over and Mike became very much more interested in developing websites than selling advertis-
ing space on them.
As well as on books such as those in the Wrox Beginner series, Mike became reliant on the enormous
amount of free help provided by online communities while he learned his new craft. Mike is now
one of the all-time leading contributors to the official ASP.NET forums at http://forums.asp.net
and is also a moderator there.
As a result of his contributions to the ASP.NET community via the forums, and through his
technical article site at www.mikesdotnetting.com, Mike received the Microsoft Most Valuable
Professional (MVP) Award for ASP.NET in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Beginning ASP.NET Web
Pages with WebMatrix is Mike’s first book.
Mike is currently the Operations Director for ITEC Systems, a company that produces specialist
software for recruitment agencies all around the world.
Mike lives in Rochester in the UK with his wife of over 25 years, Anna. Together they have two
daughters and a grandson.

Imar Spaanjaars  graduated in Leisure Management at the Leisure Management School in the
Netherlands, but he quickly changed his career path into the Internet world.
After working in the Internet business at various web agencies for thirteen years, he started up
his own company called De Vier Koeden (http://devierkoeden.com), a small Internet agency
specializing in consultancy and development of Internet and intranet applications with Microsoft
technologies such as ASP.NET 4. He’s also the technical director of Dynamicweb Netherlands and
Dynamicweb North America, two branches of the popular Danish CMS and eCommerce system
Dynamicweb.
Imar has written books on ASP.NET and Macromedia Dreamweaver, all published under the Wrox
brand. He is also one of the top contributors to the Wrox Community Forum at p2p.wrox.com,
where he shares his knowledge with fellow programmers.
Since 2008, Imar has been rewarded with Microsoft’s Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award for
his contributions to the ASP.NET community.

About the Technical Editor

Michael Apostol graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.S. in Economics. He started
his career working for Microsoft Corporation in Market Development. Michael has worked in both
software development and information technology as an I.T. manager, programmer, and consul-
tant for numerous companies in the Western United States in addition to a few trips to Europe as a
software instructor. Presently, he is employed as a contractor writing SQL Server TSQL code for a
company in Hawaii. He has thoroughly enjoyed his work as a technical editor with his last project
being: Beginning Microsoft ASP.NET 4.0 by Imar Spaanjaars (2010, Wiley Publishing, Inc.). In his free
time, Michael tries to get as much time possible with his adopted seven year old Ethiopian son, Geremu,

— Vaikeahan minun olisi kieltää sinulta mitään, vastasi herra

Skrzetuski, — koska minun sinua on kiittäminen siitä, että kaikki on
kääntynyt parhaiten päin.

— Arvasinhan minä, sanoi poika, — että te olette miettinyt minulle

palkinnon.

— Sano vain, mitä haluat.

Rzendzianin ympyriäiset kasvot synkistyivät ja hänen silmissään

kiilsi viha ja vimma.

— Yhtä armoa minä pyydän: antakaa Bohun minulle!

— Bohunko? sanoi herra Skrzetuski hämmästyneenä.

— Mitä sinä hänellä?

— Minä aion, nähkääs, katsoa, ettei minun osani mene hukkaan ja

Skrzetuskin kulmakarvat vetäytyivät kokoon.

Herra Janin äänessä oli niin paljon voimaa ja tahtoa, että poika
heti kadotti kaiken toivon ja puheli itkevällä äänellä:

— Kun hän on terve, niin hän pitää puoliaan kahtakin sellaista

vastaan kuin minä, mutta kun hän taas on kipeä, niin minä en saa
kostaa hänelle. Milloin minä sitten maksan hänelle, mitä hän on
minulle tehnyt?

— Jätä kosto Jumalalle, sanoi Skrzetuski.

Poika avasi suunsa, vielä sanoakseen ja kysyäkseen jotakin, mutta

herra Jan kääntyi pois ja lähti astelemaan telttoja kohden, joiden
eteen oli kokoontunut paljon upseereja. Heidän keskellään istui
rouva Witowski ja hänen vierellään ruhtinatar. Heidän edessään,
jonkun matkan päässä, seisoi herra Zagloba lakitta päin ja kuvaili
Zbarazin piiritystä niille, jotka olivat olleet mukana vain Zborowissa.
Kaikki kuuntelivat häntä henkeään pidätellen, kasvot liikutuksen

mielikuvitus toi heidän silmiensä eteen nuo veriset tapaukset ilmi
elävinä. He näkivät silmiensä edessä ikäänkuin meren ympäröivät
vallit ja vimmaiset rynnäköt, kuulivat melun ja mylvinän, kuulivat
tykkien ja pyssyjen paukkeen, näkivät vallilla ruhtinaan hopeaisessa
panssarissaan keskellä kuulasadetta. Elävästi tajusivat he kurjuuden
ja nälän, nuo punaiset yöt, jolloin kuolema kierteli vallien yllä kuin
pahaenteinen suuri lintu, Podbipientan ja Skrzetuskin lähdön. Ja he
kuuntelivat kertomusta henkeä pidätellen ja välistä nostaen silmänsä
ylöspäin, tai tarttuen miekan kahvaan. Mutta herra Zagloba lopetti
näin:

— Yksi ainoa hauta se oli, suuri jättiläiskumpu, ja ettei Puolan

Innostus valtasi kaikki kokoontuneet. Toiset juoksivat hakemaan

pikareita, toiset heittivät ilmaan lakkejaan. Sotamiehet alkoivat
kalistella sapelejaan ja pian täytti ilman yksi ainoa yleinen huuto:
 — Kunnia, kunnia! Eläköön, eläköön!

Todellisena kristillisenä ritarina painoi Skrzetuski nöyränä alas

päänsä, mutta ruhtinatar nousi ja heilutti palmikoitaan, puna kohosi
hänen poskilleen ja silmistä säihkyi ylpeys, sillä olihan tuo ritari
tuleva hänen miehekseen ja miehen kunnia lankeaa aina yli naisen
niinkuin auringon valo yli maan.

Vasta myöhään yöllä hajaantuivat kokoontuneet eri tahoille.

Herrasväki Witowski, herra Przyjemski ja Krasnostawin starosta
lähtivät rykmentteineen Toporowin taholle ja Skrzetuski ynnä
ruhtinatar ja Wolodyjowskin lippukunta Tarnopoliin. Yö oli lempeä
kuin päivä, tähtien parvet kimmeltivät taivaalla, kuu nousi ja verhosi
hopeaan hämähäkinverkkojen peittämät kentät, sotamiehet
laulelivat. Sitten nousivat niityiltä valkeat huurut, tehden seudun
ikäänkuin ainoaksi jättiläisjärveksi, jota kuu valaisi.

Samanlaisena yönä oli Skrzetuski kerran lähtenyt Zbarazista ja

juuri samanlaisena yönä sai hän nyt tuntea ruhtinattaren sydämen
lyövän omaansa vastaan.
JÄLKILUKU.

Historiallinen murhenäytelmä ei loppunut Zbarazin eikä Zborowin

luona eikä siellä liioin päättynyt edes ensimäinen näytös. Kaksi
vuotta myöhemmin nousi koko kasakkakansa jälleen taisteluun
valtakuntaa vastaan. Chmielnicki nousi voimakkaampana kuin
koskaan ennen ja hänen kanssaan marssi kaikkien ordojen khani ja
samat päälliköt, jotka olivat olleet johdossa jo Zbarazin luona: villi
Tuhaj-bej, Urum-murza, Artim-Girej, Nuradyn, Galga, Amurat ja
Sabagazy. Tulipalojen loimut ja ihmisten vaikerrus kävivät heidän
edellänsä. Tuhannet sotamiehet täyttivät kentät ja metsät, puolen
miljoonan suusta kaikui sotahuutoja ja ihmisistä tuntui, että Puolan
valtakunnan viimeinen päivä oli koittanut.

Mutta myöskin Puola oli vihdoinkin herännyt turtumuksestaan ja

luopunut vanhasta kanslerien ja neuvottelujen politiikasta. Vihdoinkin
oli täällä käynyt selväksi, että vain miekka voi taata pitempiaikaisen
rauhan. Kun siis kuningas marssi vihollistulvaa vastaan, niin oli
hänellä mukanaan satatuhatta sotilasta ja aateli, lukuunottamatta
kuormarenkejä ja palvelijoita.

Ketään edellisessä kerrotuista ritareista ei puuttunut puolalaisesta

sotajoukosta. Mukana oli ruhtinas Jeremi Wisniowiecki koko
divisionansa kanssa, ja palvelivat siinä entiseen tapaan Skrzetuski,
Wolodyjowski ja vapaaehtoinen Zagloba. Mukana olivat molemmat
hetmanit Potocki ja Kalinowski, jotka sitä ennen olivat lunastetut
vapaiksi tatarien vankeudesta. Niinikään olivat mukana Itfon
Czarniecki, joka myöhemmin voitti Ruotsin kuninkaan Kaarle
Kustaan, ja herra Przyjemski, joka johti koko tykistöä, kenraali Ubald,
herra Arciszewski ja Krasnostawin starosta sekä hänen veljensä
Jaworowin starosta, sittemmin kuningas Juhana III, ja Pommerin
vojevoda Ludwig Weycher, Marienburgin vojevoda Jakob, kruunun
lipunkantaja Koniecpolski, piispat, valtakunnan arvohenkilöt ja
senaattorit, sanalla sanoen koko Puola ylimmän päällikkönsä
kuninkaan johdolla.

Bersesteczkon kentillä kohtasivat vihdoin nuo äärettömät joukot

toisensa ja siellä taisteltiin yksi maailmanhistorian suurimpia
taisteluja, taistelu, jonka maine kaikui yli silloisen Europan.

Sitä kesti kolme päivää: kahtena ensimäisenä päivänä vaappui

kohtalon vaaka sinne tänne, kolmantena alkoi yleinen taistelu, joka
ratkaisi voiton. Tämän taistelun alkoi ruhtinas Jeremi.

Hän oli koko vasemman siiven johdossa ja siellä hän ilman asetta
ja paljain päin, niinkuin myrskytuuli ajaa, pitkin kenttää ajoi takaa
niitä äärettömiä vihollisjoukkoja, joihin kuului Krimin, Nogain ja
Bialogradin tatareja, Silistrian ja Rumelian turkkilaisia, urumbaaleja,
janitshareja, serbialaisia, valakialaisia, perijerejä ja muita villejä
sotamiehiä, koottuja Uralin vuorilta, Kaspian meren rannoilta ja
Asovan meren soista aina Tonavaa myöten.

Ja niinkuin joki katoaa sitä seuraavista silmistä meren vaahtoisiin

syvyyksiin, niin katosivat katsojan silmistä ruhtinaan joukot
vihollismereen. Tomupilvi vain nousi tasangolle kuin mikäkin
vimmainen pilvenpatsas, peittäen taistelijat.

Tämän yli-inhimillisen taistelun kulkua katselivat koko armeija ja

kuningas, ja alikansleri Lesczynski nosti käsillään pyhän ristinpuun ja
kohotti sen siunaten yli kiitävien joukkojen.

Samaan aikaan hyökkäsi toiselta sivulta kuninkaan armeijaa

vastaan koko kasakkaleiri, luvultaan kaksisataatuhatta miestä,
tykkeineen, syösten tulta kuin lohikäärme. Ennenkuin kuitenkaan
kaikki joukot olivat päässeet esiin tomupilvestä, johon Wisniowieckin
rykmentit olivat kadonneet, kiiti esiin uutta ratsuväkeä, ensin
kymmeniä, sitten satoja, sitten tuhansia ja vihdoin kymmeniä
tuhansia, lentääkseen mäenrinteille, jossa khani valiojoukkonsa
ympäröimänä pysytteli.

Villit laumat pakenivat kauhun valtaamina ja epäjärjestyksessä,

puolalaisten rykmenttien ajaessa niitä takaa.

Tuhannet tatarit ja kasakat jäivät peittämään taistelukenttää ja

heidän joukossaan makasi sapelin kahtia lyömänä ljahien paatunut
vihollinen ja kasakkain uskollinen liittolainen, villi ja miehuullinen
Tuhaj-bei.

"Kauhea ruhtinas" vietti voittoa.

Mutta kuningas huomasi päällikönsilmällään ruhtinaan voiton

merkityksen ja päätti yksintein tuhota ordat, ennenkuin kasakka-
armeija ehtii paikalle.

Kaikki puolalaiset joukot lähtivät siis liikkeelle ja kaikki tykit

paukkuivat, levittäen kuolemaa ja hämminkiä. Nyt kaatui khanin veli,
uljas Amurat, rintaan ammutusta kuulasta. Orda päästi silloin tuskan
huudon. Jo taistelun alussa haavoittunut khani seurasi etäämpää
kauhistuneena taistelun kulkua. Tykkien ja tulen keskeltä tulivat nyt
esiin herra Przyjemski ja kuningas ratsastajineen. Ja sivustalla tömisi
maa taisteluun rientävän raskaan ratsujoukon askelten alla.

Silloin alkoi Islam-Girej vapista. Eikä hän kestänyt taistelua, vaan

karautti pois ja hänen jälkeensä pakenivat epäjärjestyksessä kaikki
ordat ja urumbaalit ja kaikki Zaporogin ratsukasakat, Silistrian
turkkilaiset ja turkkilaistuneet kansat, aivan niinkuin pilvet hajoavat
tuulessa.

Epätoivoon joutunut Chmielnicki ajoi nyt pakenevien luo ja rukoili

khania palaamaan taisteluun. Mutta khani vain ärjyi vihasta, kun
hänet näki ja käski tatariensa ottaa hänet kiinni ja sitoa hevosen
selkään. Ja niin hän vei hänet mukanaan.

Nyt jäi paikalle vain kasakkaleiri. Leirin päällikkö Dziedziala ei

tietänyt, miten Chmielnickin oli käynyt, mutta nähdessään tappion ja
kaikkien ordojen häpeällisen paon, pysäytti hän joukkonsa, vetäytyi
leireineen takaisin ja asettui Pleszowan soiseen joenmutkaan.

Silloin puhkesi taivaallakin myrsky ja ääretön sade alkoi vyöryä

alas. "Jumala huuhteli maata vanhurskaan taistelun jälkeen."

Sadetta kesti muutamia päiviä ja kuninkaan sotajoukot, jotka

edellisissä taisteluissa olivat väsyneet, lepäsivät nämä päivät.
Tällävälin oli kasakkaleirin ympäri tehty valli ja se niinmuodoin
muutettu jättiläiskokoiseksi liikkuvaksi linnoitukseksi.

Kauniin sään palattua alkoi piiritys, ihmeellisin mitä koskaan on

nähty.
 Satatuhatta miestä käsittävä kuninkaan armeija piiritti Dziedzialan
kaksisatatuhantista armeijaa.

Kuninkaalta puuttui tykkejä, muonavaroja, ammuksia. Dziedzialalla

oli äärettömät ruutivarastot, kaikenlaisia elintarpeita ja lisäksi
seitsemänkymmentä raskaampaa ja kevyempää tykkiä.

Mutta kuninkaallisilla joukoilla oli etunenässään kuningas ja

kasakoilta puuttui Chmielnicki.

Kuninkaallisia sotilaita elähytti lisäksi äsken saatu voitto, kasakat

taas olivat epävarmoja.

Kului muutamia päiviä. Chmielnickin ja khanin palaamisesta ei

enää ollut toivoa.

Silloin alettiin hieroa rauhaa. Kasakkapäälliköt tulivat kuninkaan

luo, osoittivat hänelle alamaista kunniaa, pyysivät armoa, kävivät
senaattorien teltoissa, kumartuivat heidän viittojensa liepeitä kohti,
luvaten hankkia heille Chmielnickin vaikka maan alta ja luovuttaa
hänet kuninkaalle.

Jan Kasimirin sydän ei ollut vieras säälille. Hän olisi mielellään

päästänyt kotiin rahvaan ja kasakkajoukon, kunhan hänelle vain olisi
luovutettu päälliköt, jotta hän saisi pidättää ne, kunnes itse
Chmielnickikin olisi luovutettu.

Mutta sellainen sopimus ei ollut kasakkapäällikköjen mieleen,

koska he kaikkien tekojensa tähden eivät uskaltaneet toivoa
saavansa anteeksiantoa.

Rauhaa hierottaessa jatkuivat siis taistelut, epätoivoiset

uloshyökkäykset ja joka päivä vuosi runsaasti puolalaista ja
kasakkain verta.

Kasakat taistelivat päivällä urhoollisesti ja epätoivon vimmalla,

mutta yöllä kääntyivät heidän synkät mielensä armoa rukoillen
kuninkaallista leiriä kohden.

Dziedziala oli taipuvainen sovintoon ja tarjosi kuninkaalle oman

päänsä pantiksi, saadakseen joukkonsa ja rahvaan pelastetuiksi.

Mutta kasakkaleirissä syttyi kapina. Toiset tahtoivat antautua,

toiset puolustautua kuolemaan saakka. Kaikkien ajatukset kiersivät
samaa asiaa: kuinka päästä pois leiristä.

Rohkeimmistakin se kuitenkin näytti mahdottomalta. Leiriä

ympäröi joen mutka ja äärettömät suot. Puolustautua saattoi siinä
vuosikausia, mutta poispääsyä varten oli vain yksi tie —
kuninkaallisten sotajoukkojen läpi.

Tätä tietä ei kasakkaleirissä kukaan ajatellut.

Taistelujen keskeyttämät neuvottelut edistyivät hitaasti.

Epäjärjestykset kasakkain keskuudessa kävivät yhä tavallisemmiksi.
Erään tällaisen metelin aikana syöstiin päällikkyydestä Dziedziala ja
valittiin uusi johtaja.

Hänen nimensä valoi uutta rohkeutta kasakkain masentuneihin

mieliin. Tämä nimi, jolla kuninkaallisessakin leirissä oli komea kaiku,
herätti varsinkin muutamien puolalaisten upseerien mielissä jo
haalistuneita muistoja entisistä kärsimyksistä ja onnettomuuksista.

Uuden päällikön nimi oli Bohun.

 Jo ennestäänkin oli hänellä ollut huomattu asema kasakkain
keskellä, sekä neuvotteluissa että taisteluissa. Yleinen mielipide
katsoi häntä Chmielnickin seuraajaksi.

Bohun oli ensimäisenä kasakkapäälliköistä asettunut yhdessä

tatarien kanssa viisikymmentuhantisen joukon etunenään. Hän oli
ottanut osaa kolmipäiväiseen ratsuväen taisteluun ja vaikka Jeremi
oli lyönyt sekä hänet että khanin ja ordan, niin oli hän kuitenkin
kyennyt pelastamaan tuhosta suurimman osan voimiaan ja
onnistunut saamaan niille turvallisen aseman. Nyt antoi
leppymättömien puolue hänelle ylipäällikkyyden, luottaen siihen, että
vain hän kykeni pelastamaan kasakkajoukon.

Nuori päällikkö ei tahtonut kuulla puhuttavankaan sovitteluista.

Hän halusi taistelua ja verenvuodatusta, vaikkapa hänen itsensä
täytyisikin hukkua siihen.

Pian hän kuitenkin tuli vakuutetuksi siitä, että noilla joukoilla ei

voinut ajatellakaan ase kädessä tunkeutua kuninkaallisen armeijan
ruumiiden yli ja siksi tarttui hän toiseen keinoon.

Historia on säilyttänyt muiston niistä kuulumattomista

ponnistuksista, jotka aikalaisten silmissä näyttivät jättiläistöiltä,
ponnistuksista, joiden tarkoituksena oli pelastaa sotajoukko ja
rahvas.

Bohun päätti kulkea Pleszowan pohjattomien soiden läpi, tai

oikeammin hän päätti rakentaa noiden rämeiden yli sillan, jota
myöten kaikki saarretut saattoivat käydä.

Ja niin alkoivat kokonaiset metsät kasakkain kirveiden iskuista

kaatua ja upposivat soihin. Sinne heitettiin vankkureita, telttoja,
turkkeja, viittoja, ja silta piteni kuin pitenikin joka päivä.

Näytti todella siltä, että tuolle päällikölle ei mikään ole

mahdotonta.

Kuningas lykkäsi rynnistyksen myöhemmäksi, koska tahtoi säästää

verta. Nähdessään jättiläistyöt, hän kuitenkin huomasi, että muuta
keinoa ei ole ja käski torventoitotuksella ilmoittaa armeijalle, että sen
illaksi on valmistauduttava toimintaan.

Kasakkaleirissä ei kenelläkään ollut tietoa tästä kuninkaan

aikomuksesta. Silta piteni pitenemistään. Vielä yön kuluessa ja
aamulla ratsasti Bohun päällikköjensä etunenässä tarkastamaan
teitä.

Oli maanantai, heinäkuun 7 päivä, v. 1657. Aamu valkeni

kalpeana, ikäänkuin se olisi ollut pelästyksissään, rusko idässä
loimusi verisenä, aurinko nousi taivaalle punertavana ja ikäänkuin
sairaana. Verinen välke valaisi vesiä ja metsiä.

Puolalaisten leiristä ajettiin hevosia laitumelle. Kasakkaleiristä

kuului äsken heränneiden miesten puheensorina. Tulet sytytettiin ja
alettiin valmistaa aamuateriaa. Kaikki näkivät Bohunin saattueineen
lähtevän ratsastamaan. Hänen jäljessään kulki ratsuväki, jolla hänen
oli tarkoitus karkoittaa Braclawin vojevoda, koska tämä piti
hallussaan kasakkaleirin selkäpuolella olevaa asemaa ja tykeillään
häiritsi kasakkain töitä.

Rahvas katseli Bohunin ratsastusta levollisena, vieläpä rohkaistuin

mielin. Tuhannet silmät saattoivat nuorta päällikköä ja tuhansista
suista kuului häntä kohti huuto: Jumala sinua siunatkoon, sinä
haukka-kultamme!
 Päällikkö, saattue ja ratsujoukko loittonivat verkalleen leiristä,
saapuivat metsän rantaan, vilahtivat vielä kerran näkyviin
aamuauringossa ja häipyivät sitten vähitellen tiheikön taakse.

Mutta heti senjälkeen huusi, tai pikemmin ulvahti jokin kauhea,

läpitunkeva ääni, kasakkaleirin portilla:

— Miehet, pelastakaa itsenne!

— Päälliköt pakenevat! kuului nyt kymmenkunta ääntä.

— Päälliköt pakenevat! toistivat jo sadat ja tuhannet äänet. Ja

humu tarttui väkijoukkoon ja kävi sen läpi niinkuin tuulen
puhaltaessa humina leviää metsään. Ja taasen pääsi
kahdestasadasta tuhannesta kurkusta kauhea huuto:

— Pelastakaa itsenne, pelastakaa!… Ljahit!… Päälliköt pakenevat!

Ihmismassat vyöryivät jo vimmaisena tulvana, tulet tallattiin,

kuormat, teltat kaadettiin, aitausten seipäät lentelivät irti revittyinä,
kaikki miehet tungeskelivat toisiaan vastaan mitä kauheimmassa
ahdingossa. Hirvittävä pakokauhu teki kaikki mielettömiksi.
Ruumisvuoret sulkivat, heti syntyessään, kaikki tiet. Astuttiin sekä
huudoin että kirkunalla ruumisläjien yli, joukot vyöryivät esiin
leiriaukealta, ryntäsivät telasilloille, sysäsivät toinen toisiaan suohon,
hukkuvat tarttuivat suonenvedontapaisesti kiinni toisiinsa ja rukoilivat
taivaalta armoa, upoten vihdoin kylmään, pohjattomaan suohon.
Telasillalla syntyi taistelu siitä, kuka saisi sillä sijaa, Pleszowan vesi
tuli täyteen ruumiita, historian Nemesis kosti kauheasti
Beresteczkolla Pilawcen tappion.
 Kamala huuto oli tunkenut nuoren päällikön korviin ja hän käsitti
heti mitä oli tapahtunut. Turhaan hän kuitenkin samassa hetkessä
kääntyi takaisin leiriin päin, turhaan ratsasti hän joukkojaan vastaan,
kädet korotettuina taivasta kohden. Hänen äänensä hukkui
tuhansien kirkunaan, pakenevien kauhea tulva tempasi hänet
ratsuineen, saattueineen ja koko ratsujoukkoineen mukaansa,
syösten heidät tuhoon.

Kuninkaan sotajoukot hämmästyivät itsekin, nähdessään tämän

hämmingin, jota monet aluksi olivat pitäneet epätoivoisena
ryntäyksenä ulos leiristä, kunnes heidän vihdoin oli täytynyt uskoa
omia silmiään. Hetken perästä kuitenkin, kun hämmästys oli ehtinyt
hiukan laantua, ryntäsivät kaikki lippukunnat, edes käskyä
odottamatta, vihollista vastaan ja etunenässä kulki myrskytuulena
rakuunalippukunta, jota johti pieni ritari, paljastettu sapeli pään
päällä.

Päivästä tuli vihan, tappion ja tuomion päivä. Joka ei jäänyt

jalkoihin tai hukkunut veteen, se joutui miekan uhriksi. Veri tulvi
virtana niin että oli vaikeaa tuntea, verikö vai vesi jalkain alla vuotaa.
Hullaantuneet joukot alkoivat silloin entistäkin suuremmassa
epäjärjestyksessä tungeskella ja töniä toisiaan veteen. Kaameat
metsät olivat jo ainoana teurastuspaikkana ja tappaminen ja
surmaaminen kävi sitä kauheammaksi, kun nuo äärettömät joukot
yhtäkkiä olivat alkaneet vimmatusti puolustaa itseään. Taistelu riehui
sekä soissa että metsissä ja kentillä. Braclawin vojevoda oli
katkaissut pakenevilta paluutien. Turhaan käski kuningas hillitä
sotamiestensä intoa. Sääli oli vaiennut ja teurastusta jatkui yöhön
asti, teurastusta, jonka kaltaista eivät vanhimmatkaan sotilaat
muistaneet nähneensä ja jota muistellessa myöhemmin hiukset
nousivat päässä pystyyn.
 Kun vihdoin pimeys peitti maan, olivat voittajatkin
kauhistuksissaan työstään. Ei laulettu Te deumia, ei ilon, vaan säälin
ja murheen kyyneleet valuivat kuninkaan silmistä.

Niin loppui ensimäinen näytös sitä murhenäytelmää, jonka

tekijänä oli
Chmielnicki.

Mutta Bohun ei menettänyt henkeään tänä kauheana päivänä.

Toiset sanoivat hänen, huomatessaan tappion tulevan, ensimäisenä
pelastaneen henkensä pakenemalla, toiset väittivät, että eräs
tunnettu ritari oli hänet pelastanut. Totuuden perille ei kukaan
päässyt.

Se vain oli varma, että seuraavista sodista hänen nimensä useasti

sukelsi esiin kuuluisimpien kasakkapäällikköjen nimien joukossa.
Jonkun kostavan käden laukaus osui häneen vasta muutama vuosi
myöhemmin, mutta ei silloinkaan vielä koittanut hänen viimeinen
hetkensä. Kun ruhtinas Wisniowiecki oli vaivoistaan ja
ponnistuksistaan kuollut ja kun Lubnien alue irtaantui Puolan
valtioruumiista, niin Bohun otti haltuunsa suurimman osan hänen
maastaan. Kerrotaan, ettei hän lopulta tahtonut tunnustaa
Chmielnickinkään valtaa. Silloin, kun Chmielnicki murtuneena ja
oman väkensä kiroamana haki vierailta suojaa, kielsi ylpeä Bohun
häneltä kaiken turvan ja oli valmis miekka kädessä puolustamaan
kasakkavapauttaan.

Kerrotaan myöskin, ettei hymy enää koskaan noussut tämän

omituisen miehen huulille. Hän ei asunut Lubniessa, vaan
maalaistalossa, jonka hän oli rakennuttanut uudelleen ja jonka
nimeksi hän oli pannut Rozlogi. Siellä kerrotaan hänen kuolleenkin.
 Kansalaissotia jatkui vielä kauan hänen kuolemansa jälkeen ja
sitten tulivat rutto ja ruotsalainen. Tatarit vierailivat nekin miltei
alinomaa Ukrainassa, ryöstäen rahvasta laumoittain orjuuteensa.
Valtakunta kävi autioksi, autiona oli Ukraina. Sudet ulvoivat entisten
kaupunkien raunioilla ja kerran kukoistavat maat olivat kuin suuri
hautausmaa. Viha oli juurtunut sydämiin ja myrkytti siellä veljien
verta.
