Question:

Title: Enhancing Thermal Conductivity of Ceramic Materials Using SiC Fibers

1)Extract the Engineering Problem:

Determine the key engineering challenges in designing a composite material that meets the
above specifications. Identify the potential issues related to material selection, thermal
management, and structural integrity.

2)Current Status (Science)

The ceramic material currently used in high-temperature applications, such as turbine blades,
has a thermal conductivity of 6 W/m·K. This is insufficient for efficiently dissipating heat,
which can lead to material failure in extreme conditions.

Let’s calculate the heat transfer rate (Q) for a ceramic component under current conditions,
using Fourier’s law of heat conduction:
3) Use of Engineering
4. Use of mathematics

Heat transfer improvement =100,000 -60,000= 40,000 W
