Importing vector features from attribute data

This document outlines a lab exercise for importing tourist accommodation data into QGIS using a CSV file containing geographic coordinates. The procedure includes saving the data as a text file, specifying the file path in QGIS, and defining the geometry for the imported features. Additionally, it prompts students to examine the attributes associated with each point feature after import.

LAB 2: Importing Features From Attribute Data

(November, 2020)
Introduction
• GIS data may come in a table or an Excel spreadsheet
• Such data can be obtained from the using a handheld GPS
receiver that records coordinates of the features as
waypoints.;
• A list with lat/long coordinates of features can easily be
imported on to a GIS project.
• In this Lab, we will import text file on tourist
accommodation data to QGIS.
• Data Source: Location of tourist accommodation facilities
in TENP (.CSV)
• Data Source: Location of tourist accommodation facilities
in TENP (.CSV)
Procedure
• To be exported to QGIS, the file should be saved as a text file
with at least 2 columns that contain the X and Y coordinates.
• Examine the tabular data source.
• The file is already saved as a Comma Separated Values (CSV)
file
• It contains 28 facilities, six columns , two of which are X and
Y UTM coordinates of the facilities.
Click the Open Data Source Manager button on the Data Source Toolbar.
On the Data source manager switch to the Delimited Text tab .

Click the ... button next to File name and specify the path to the text file of your
data
Find your .CSV file
Geometry definition
• Select point
coordinates,
• Select the X and Y
fields.
• Set the Geometry
CRS
• Click ADD.
