ii). Explain the difference in bond angles in NH3 and H2O

b) Define the terms

i), Weak acid

ii). Buffer solution

iii). Calculate the pH of a buffer solution prepared by adding 20.00cm 3 of 0.40 mol dm-3 HCl(aq)
to 30.0cm3 of 0.65 mol dm-3 ammonia aqueous, given that, Kb (NH3) = 1.81 x 10-3 mol dm-3

iv), Give two applications of buffers

2)a) i) Define the term atomic radius

ii). Shielding effect

b). Describe and explain the variation in:

i). Atomic radius across period 3

ii). Ionic radius across period 3

iii). Shielding effect across period 3 [Total 20]

3a). NOCl decompose according to the equation:

a). A flask containing 0.50 moles of NOCl was allowed to reach equilibrium at a pressure of 2.16
atmospheres. The equilibrium moles of NOCl were found to be 0.30 moles.

Calculate the equilibrium moles of:

i). NO

ii). Cl2

iii), Equilibrium partial pressures of each of the three gases in the equilibrium mixture

iv). The value of Kp

b) A mixture of proteins can be separated by chromatography and electrophoresis

i). Describe how chromatography can be used to separate proteins. How can the proteins be
identified? Include illustrative diagrams in your answer[Total 20]

4 Eriochrome black is a common indicator in complexometric titrations for Mg 2+, Ca2+ and Mn2+.
Its structure is as shown:

ii). What type of a compound is Eriochrome Black?
iii). Suggest one other possible use of Eriochrome Black
b), Give the structural formulae of two compounds that react together in a one-step
reaction to form Eriochrome black. State the reagents and conditions
c). Give displayed or structural formulae of compounds formed when Eriochrome black
reacts with each of the following compounds:
1. Sodium metal
2. Aqueous bromine
3. A mixture of tin and concentrated hydrochloric acid
NB: Name the type of reaction that takes place in each case and state any observations
made.
