Who Wrote the Book of Joshua
Sholars believe that The Book of Joshua in the Bible was primarily written
by Joshua, although the ending may have been written by Phinehas, who was
an eyewitness to the events recounted there. Other contemporaries of Joshua,
including Eleazar the high priest, also contributed to the writing of this historical
book.
When Was the Book Written?
The Book of Joshua, which recounts the Israelites' entry into the Promised Land
under Joshua's leadership, likely wasn't written during Joshua's lifetime, but rather
sometime between the 15th and 13th centuries BCE, or potentially even later,
perhaps during the Babylonian exile (around 550 BCE).
What Was the Purpose of Writing this Book?
The purpose is the give a historical account of the life and challenges of the
children of Israel, from the time of the death of Moses until they buried the bones
of Joseph, which were brought out of Egypt, to be buried in the Promised Land.

Chapter 1: God’s Promise & Instructions to Joshua

1. [C] Now, after the death of Moses, the servant of the LORD it came to pass,
that the LORD spoke unto Joshua the sun of Nun, Moses’ aminister, saying,
2. *** (Conclusion): [C] b“Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, go
over this River Jordan, you, and all-of this people, unto the land which I
give to them, even to the children of Israel. [Arise, get packed up, and go
over the River Jordan to the Land of Canaan, just as I promised to Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob, and also to Moses.]
3. [P] c“Every place that the sole of your
foot shall tread upon, that have I given
to you, as I said unto Moses. [Every
place you stand upon shall become part
of the Promised Land, once you cross
over the river Jordan, just as I promised
to Moses.]
4. [C] d“From the wilderness and this
Lebanon, even unto the great River
Euphrates, all-of the land of the Hittites,
and unto the great sea, towards the
going down of the sun (in the west) shall
be your coast. [NOTE: Even back in 1406
BCE, the LORD was saying that all-of
Lebanon and all-of the land right up to
the headwaters of the Euphrates, was
part of the Promised Land.]

5. [P] e“There shall not be any man able to stand before you all-of the days of
your life; fas I was with Moses, so gI will be with you; hI will not fail you, nor
forsake you. [The LORD reconfirms His promise to Joshua, just as He had
through Moses.]
6. [C] i“Be strong and of good courage; for junto this people shall you divide
for an inheritance this land, which I swore unto their fathers to give them.

7. [C] “Only abe you strong and very courageous, that you may to observe to
do to do according to all-of the Law, which Moses My servant commanded
you; bturn not to the right hand, nor to the left, that you may prosper
wheresoever you go. [Again the LORD is reminding Joshua not to deviate
from the Law that God gave to the children of Israel through His servant
Moses.]
8. [C] “This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth; but cyou shall
meditate upon it day and night, that you may observe to DO according to all
that is written therein; for THEN you shall make the way prosperous, and
shall dhave good success. [In this verse is the secret of a successful spiritual
life. This was the text of Leighton Ford in his rally in Coffs Harbour, NSW on
the 11th of October 1985]
9. [C] “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and be of good courage; ebe not
afraid, neither be you dismayed; for the LORD your God is with you
wheresoever you go.
10. [THEN] Joshua commanded the officers of the people saying;
11. [C] “Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare your
victuals; for within three days you shall Passover this River Jordan, to go in
to possess the land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess it. [There
were 30 days of mourning for Moses and then Joshua prepares them for the
Trip over the River Jordan, within the first 33 days of His Leadership.]
Joshua reminds the Reubenites & the Gadites & the half-tribe of Manasseh
12. And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh,
spoke Joshua saying,
13. [C] “Remember the word which fMoses, the servant of God commanded you,
saying; ‘The LORD your God has given you rest, and has given you this
land, (on the eastern side of the River Jordan).
14. [C] “Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall remain in the land that
Moses gave you on this (eastern) side of the River Jordan; BUT you shall
pass over before your brethren garmed, all-of the mighty men of valour, and
help them. [This was the agreement made by The LORD with Moses, so that
they could remain on the plains of Moab on the eastern side of the River
Jordan to raise their herds of cattle, sheep and goats. They would go armed
before the people to help them possess the Promised Land on the western
side of the River Jordan. This land has been in Israeli possession from the
time of Moses in 1146 BCE, but sadly many Arab nations ignore this piece of
well documented history.]
15. [C] “Until the LORD has given your brethren rest, as He has (already) given
you, and they have also possessed the land, which the LORD has given them;
THEN you shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which
Moses, the LORD'S servant gave you on this (eastern) side of the River
Jordan, toward the sunrising.
16. [C] And they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do,
and wherever you send us we will go.
17. [C] “According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken
unto you, only the LORD your God hbe with you, as He was with Moses.

from the eastern side of the River Jordan, everybody knew the punishment
of rebelling against the commandments of Joshua; YOU WOULD BE PUT TO
DEATH!]

Chapter 2: The Covenant Between Rahab and the Spies

A basic rule of war is to know your enemy, his strong points and his weak points.
With this strategy in mind, Joshua sends in the spies, to check out the enemy.
1. [C] And Joshua the son of Nun bsent cout of Shittim two men to spy secretly,
saying, “Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went and came into a
d
harlot’s house named Rahab, and elodged there. [Rahab's house, likely an
inn or tavern, was a place where travellers could stay, making it a strategic
choice for the spies to gather information without arousing suspicion.
Rahab's profession and her role in the narrative highlight God's grace and
the inclusion of Gentiles in His plan.]
2. [C] And it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, there came men
in here, tonight of the children of Israel, to search out the country.
3. [C] And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, “Bring forth the men
that have come to you, which have entered your home; for they have come
to search out all-of the country.
4. [C] fAnd the woman took the two men, and hid them and said this, “There
came men unto me, but I did not know who they were.
5. [C] “And it came to pass about the time of shutting the gate, when it was
dark, that the men went out; Where the men went, I know not; pursue after
them quickly; for you shall overtake them. [She lied to protect the two spies,
to save lives.]
6. BUT she brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them among the
stalks of flax, which she laid in order upon the roof.
7. And the (king’s) men pursued after them in the direction of the River Jordan
unto the fords; and as soon as they which pursued after them went out, they
shut the gate.
8. And before they were laid down, she came up unto them on the roof;
9. [C] And she said unto the men, “I know that the LORD has given you this
land, and that gyour terror has fallen upon us, and that all-of the inhabitants
of the land hfaint because of you.
10. [C] “For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for
you, when you came out of Egypt; and iwhat you did unto the two kings of
the Amorites, that were on the other side of the River Jordan, Sihon and Og,
which you destroyed. [The nations around that region had heard the
miraculous stories of the God of the Israelites, who had opened the Red Sea
so that they could cross over on dry land, and how He had completely
destroyed the Egyptian army that followed after them; as well as the
destruction to the two armies of the kings of the Amorites.]
11. [FP] “And jas soon as we had heard these things, kour hearts did melt, neither
l
did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you; for mthe
LORD your God, He is God in heaven above, and in the earth beneath. [It is

12. *** (Conclusion), “Now therefore, I pray you, aswear unto me by the LORD,
since I have shown you kindness, that you will show kindness unto my
father’s house., and give me a true token:
13. “And that will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brothers, and
my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death. [Even
though she was a Gentile, she recognised the value of an oath sworn before
God.]
14. [CP] “And the men answered her, “Our life bfor yours, [IF] you utter not this
our business. And it shall be, when the LORD has given us the land, that we
will deal kindly and truly with you.

was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. [[IF] you keep our
mission secret, [THEN] we promise that protect you when the LORD gives us

16. And she said unto them, “Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet
you; and hide yourselves there for three days, until the pursuers be returned;
and then afterwards may go your way.
17. And the men said unto her; “We will be dblameless on this oath which you
have made us swear.
18. “Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this scarlet thread in
the window, which you did let us down by; eand you shall fbring your father,
and your mother, and your brethren, and all-of your father’s household,
home unto you.
19. [W]& [P] “And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of your
house into the street, his blood shall be upon his (own) head; and we shall
be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with you in the house, ghis blood shall
be upon our head, if any hand be upon him. [IF you and your relatives stay
in your house you will be protected; BUT if you go outside and get killed,
then we are blameless for that death.]
20. [W] & [CP] “And [IF] you utter this our business, [THEN] we will by quit of
your oath, which you have made us to swear.
21. And she said, “According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away,
and they departed: and she bound the bound the scarlet line in the window.
22. And they went and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days,
until the pursuers had returned; and the pursuers sought them throughout
all-of the way; but found them not.
23. So, the two men returned, and descended from the mountain and passed
over (the river Jordan) and came to Joshua the son of Nun and told him all-
of the things that befell them.
24. And they said unto Joshua, “Truly hthe LORD has delivered into our hands
all-of the land; for even all-of the inhabitants of the country do ifaint because
of us.

Chapter 3: Joshua comes to the Jordan & Encourages the People
1. [FP] And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed afrom Shittim,
and came to the River Jordan, he and all-of the children of Israel, and lodged
there before they passed over. [The Promise given by God to Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob, has begun; they are preparing to move across the River
Jordan in the promised Land.]

2. [FP] And it came to pass, bafter (another)

three days it came to pass, that cthe
officers, went through the hosts;
3. [FP] And they commanded the people,
saying, “When you see the Ark of the
Covenant of the LORD your God, and dthe
Priests, and the Levites bearing it, [THEN]
you shall remove from your place, and go
after it. [Remember, previously Moses had
given the order of the tribes in which they
follow after the Ark of the Covenant.]
4. [C] “Yet there shall be a space between you and it (the Ark of the Covenant),
e

about 2,000 cubits by measure (approximately 3,000 feet). Do not come

near unto it; that you may know the way that you must go; for you have
never passed this way fheretofore.
5. [P] And Joshua said unto the people, g“Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the
LORD will do wonder among you.
6. [C] And Joshua spoke unto the priests, saying, “Take up the Ark of the
Covenant, and pass over (the River Jordan) before all-of the people. And they
took up the Ark of the Covenant and went before the people.
7. [C] And the LORD said unto Joshua, “This day will I begin to magnify you in
the sight of all-of Israel, that they may know that; has I was with Moses, so
I will be with you.
8. [C] And you shall command the Priests that are bearing the Ark of the
Covenant, saying, “When you have come to the brink of the water of the
River Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.
9. [C] “And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the
words of the LORD your God.
10. [C] And Joshua said, “Hereby you shall know, that ithe Living God IS among
you, and He will, without fail, drive out from before you, jthe Canaanites, and
the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the Jebusites. [The LORD reminded them, through the words
of Joshua, of the promises that He had made to them through the words of
Moses. Now was the time for this prophetic promise to come to pass.]
11. [FP] “Behold, the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD of all-of the earth passes
over before you into the River Jordan.

Israel, lout of every tribe one man.

waters of the River Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off
from the waters that come down from above (from upriver); and they ashall
stand upon a heap. [As soon and the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant
step into the River Jordan, the Upstream River will stop flowing and they will
be standing on dry ground, just like in the Red Sea.]
14. And it came to pass, when the people were removed from their tents, to pass
over the River Jordan, and the Priests bearing the bArk of the Covenant before
the people;
15. And as they that were bearing the Ark had come unto the River Jordan, and
the feet of the priests that bare the Ark were dipped in the brim of the water,
(for the cRiver Jordan overflows all-of its banks, dall-of the time of harvest.)
16. [FP] That the waters which came down for above (from upriver) stood and
rose up upon a heap very far from the Adam, that is beside eZaretan; and
those that came down ftowards the sea of the plain (the Sea of Galilee), and
even the Salt Sea (The dead Sea), failed and were cut off; and the people
passed over right against Jericho. [And the people in the watch towers would
have been watching this large group of people travelling along the eastern
side of the River Jordan. But when they saw the waters part when the Israeli
priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant entered the water, they would
remember the stories that they had heard that the God of the Israelites had
parted the waters of the Red Sea to allow them to escape from the Egyptians,
and that the Egyptian army had been totally destroyed. When this message
was relayed to the king, the whole city would have been trembling.]
17. [FP] And the priests that bare the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD stood
firm on dry ground, in-the-midst-of the Jordan River; and all-of the Israelites
passed over on dry ground, until all-of the people were passed over the River
Jordan.
Chapter 4: The People Pass Over & The Canaanites Are Afraid
1. And it came to pass, when all-of the people were clean passed over the
Jordan, that the LORD spoke unto Joshua, saying,
2. [C] “gTake you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe, a man.
3. [C] And command them, saying, “Take you hence out of the midst of the
river Jordan, out of the place where hthe Priest’s feet stood firm (on dry
ground), itwelve stones, and you shall carry them over with you, and leave
them in the lodging place, where you shall lodge this night.
4. [C] Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the
children of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
5. [C] And Joshua said to them, “Pass over BEFORE the ARK of the LORD your
God, into the midst of the river Jordan, and every man take up a stone upon
his shoulder, according unto the member of the tribes of the children of
Israel. [Notice that Joshua commanded that they pick up the stones in the
order of the Tribes of Israel, as defined by Moses, when the tribes journey
behind the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD their God.]
6. [C] That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their
fathers in times to come, saying, “What mean you these stones”? [For the
Jews this was a significant event; the fulfilment of the promise that the LORD
God had made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that He would lead them, to a

7. Then you shall answer them, “That the waters of the River
Jordan were cut off before the Ark of the covenant of the
Lord; when it passed over the river Jordan, the waters of
Jordan were cut off; and these stones shall be for aa
memorial unto the children of Israel forever.
8. And the children of Israel did as Joshua commanded and
took up 12 stones out of the midst of the River Jordan, as
the LORD spoke unto Joshua, according to the number of
tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them unto the
place where they lodged, and laid them down there. [Over
3,000 years later, those rocks are still there as a
permanent reminder of God’s Promise being fulfilled to
the nation of Israel.]
9. And Joshua set up 12 stones in-the-midst-of the River Jordan, in the place
where the feet of the priests which bare the Ark of the Covenant stood; and
they are there unto this day.
10. For the priests which bare the Ark stood in-the-midst-of the River Jordan,
until everything was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak to
the people, according to all-of that which Moses commanded to Joshua; and
the people hastened and passed over.
11. And it came to pass, when all-of the people had completely passed over, that
the Ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the
People. [The Ark of the Covenant of the Lord God of Israel, was the protection
of the nation of Israel against the forces of the flooded River Jordan, until all-
of the nation had passed over the River Jordan.]
12. And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh barmed BEFORE the children of Israel, cas Moses had spoken unto
them; [So the fighting men of the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad & the
half-tribe of Manasseh went across the River Jordan fully armed, ahead of the
other tribes of Israel, as agreed in an oath made before Moses and the LORD
God of Israel, which was the arrangement, so that they could have possession
of the land on the eastern side of the River Jordan.]
13. About forty thousand (from these three tribes) dprepared for war passed over
before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.
14. On that day the LORD emagnified Joshua in the sight of all-of Israel; and they
feared him, as they feared Moses, all-of the days of his life.

Covenant of the LORD were come up out of the River Jordan, and the soles
of the priest’s feet were blifted up unto dry land, that the waters of the River
Jordan returned unto their place, and cflowed over all-of his banks, das they
did before. [The Moral of these verses: When the LORD speaks to you;
obey without question, and see the miracles happen. The LORD told
Joshua to send the priests carrying the Ark into the River Jordan; He
obeyed, and the waters stopped flowing. Again the LORD told Joshua
to send the troops over before the Tribes, and fear came upon the
people in Jericho. The Lord told Joshua to tell the priests to come of
out the River Jordan, and the River resumed flowing again. Three
major miracles in one day.]
19. And the people came up out of the River Jordan on the tenth day of the
first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the eastern border of Jericho.
20. And ethose twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan River, did Joshua
pitch in Gilgal.
21. [C] And He spoke unto the Children of Israel, saying, f“When your children
shall ask their fathers, gin times to come, ‘What is the meaning of these
stones’?
22. [C] Then you shall let your children know, saying, “Israel came over the River
Jordan on dry land.
23. [C] “For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the River Jordan from
before you, until you were all passed over, as the LORD your God did to the
Red Sea, hwhich He dried up, from before us, until, we had all gone over;
24. [FP] i“That all-of the people upon the earth might know that hand of the
LORD, that it is mighty; that you might jfear the LORD your God forever.

Chapter 5: Canaanites Afraid, Circumcision Renewed; An Angel Appears.

1. [FP] And it came to pass, when all-of the Amorites, which were on the
western side of the Jordan, and all-of the kings of the Canaanites, awhich
were by the sea, bheard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the River
Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that
their hearts cmelted, dneither was there spirit in them anymore, because of
the children of Israel. [When they heard this news about the miracle, they
remembered the stories about what the god of Isreal did at the Red Sea and
how they destroyed all-of the Egyptian army, and they were sorely afraid.]
2. [C] At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, “Make you esharp knives, and
circumcise again the children of Israel, the second time.
3. [FC] And Joshua made sharp knives (of flint) and circumcised the children of
Israel at fthe hill of the foreskins.
4. And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise; gALL-OF the people that
came out of Egypt, that were males, even all-of the men of war, died in the
wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
5. Now, all-of the men that came out were circumcised; BUT all-of the people
that were born in the wilderness by the way, as they came forth out of Egypt,
them they had not circumcised. [So, there was a whole generation of males,
born in the wilderness that had to be circumcised, because you could not
celebrate Passover if you were not circumcised.]

6. For the children of Israel walked aforty years (less 5 days) in the wilderness,
until all-of the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were
consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD; unto whom the
LORD bswear that He would not show them the land, which the LORD swore
unto their fathers that He would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
7. And the children whom he raised in their stead, them Joshua circumcised:
for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them along
the way ~ (in the wilderness).
8. And it came to pass, when cthey had done circumcising, all-of the people,
that they abode in their places in the camp, until they were whole ~ (until
they were healed). [Now had the Canaanites attacked them at this time they
would have been defeated: BUT the LORD was present in their midst to
protect them.]
9. [C] And the LORD said unto Joshua, “This day have I rolled away dthe
reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore, the name of the place is called
e
Gilgal unto this day”.
10. [C] And the children of Israel encamped at Gilgal and kept the Passover fon
the fourteenth day of the month (exactly 40 years after they performed the
first Passover in Egypt, before the left Egypt the next day).
11. And they did eat the old corn of the land on the morning after the Passover,
unleavened cakes, and gparched corn in the same day. (on the 15th day of
Nisan).
12. And hthe Manna ceased (on the 16th day of Nisan ~ the day after they had
eaten the corn from the Promised Land); neither had the children of Israel
manna anymore; but they did eat of the fruit of the fruit of Canaan that year.
13. [C] And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his
eyes and looked, and behold, there stood ia man over against him, jwith his
sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him,
“Are you for us, or for our adversaries”? [This shows the absolute
courage of Joshua, to go and face off against a man with a drawn sword, and
challenge Him like this.]
14. And He answered and said; “No, but as Captain of the Host of the LORD AM
I now come”. And Joshua fell of his face to the earth, and did worship Him,
and said unto Him, “What says My LORD unto His servant”? [Joshua is
confronted by the LORD Himself, in His spiritual form, who did not tell him,
not to worship Him (as angels do).]
15. [C] And the Captain of the LORD'S Host said unto Joshua; “Lose you shoes
from off your feet, for the place whereon you stand is holy”. And Joshua did
so. [This is the second time in scripture that this command has been given;
The first time by Jesus, as the voice to Moses, coming from the Burning Bush,
and now here as Jesus, as the Captain of the Host of the Heavenly Armies.]

Chapter 6: Jericho is Shut Up.
1. Now Jericho awas straightly shut up because of the children of Israel; none
went out, and none came in. [Even though the children of Israel had not
attacked Jericho yet, the fear of them put the enemy under an imaginary
siege.]
2. [P] And the LORD said unto Joshua, “See, bI have given into your
hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.
[The LORD proclaims to Joshua that He has given the city of Jericho, its king
and their army. All He has to do now is “follow orders”.]

3. [C] “And you shall compass the city, all your men of war, and go round
the city once. Thus, shall you do for six days.
4. [C] “And seven priests shall go before the Ark bearing seven
c
trumpets of ram’s horn; and on the seventh day, you shall march
around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow their
trumpets. [You shall organise all-of your army and march around city once
every day for six days; and on the seventh day the whole army shall march
around the city seven times, blowing their trumpets.]
5. [P] “And it shall come to pass, that when they dmake a long blast
with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet,
all-of the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the
city shall fall down eflat, and the people shall ascend up every man
straight before him". [Now that later the children of Israel did not think
that their marching and their priests blowing the rams’ horn and their
shouting brought down the walls; the walls did not fall inwards; but fell out
words, in direct opposite to what they would have expected; proving without
any doubt, that the LORD Himself, caused the walls to fall down ~ another
miracle.]
6. [C] And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, “Take
the Ark of the Covenant, and let seven priests, bear seven trumpets of rams’
horns, before the Ark of the LORD”.

7. [C] And He said unto the people, “Pass on, and compass the city, (go around
the city), and let him that is armed (for war) pass on before the Ark of the
LORD”.
8. [FC] And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the
seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before
the LORD and blew with the trumpets; and the Ark of the Covenant followed
them. [The LORD Himself was still present with the people, watching over
the whole procedure, as He prepared the nation for their first victory over
the people of the Promised land.]
9. [FC] And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets,
and the reward (the remained of the Children of Israel) came after the Ark,
the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.
10. [C] And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout,
nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of
your mouth, until the day I bid you to shout: Then shall you shout”.
11. [FC] So the Ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it (around it)
once; and they came into the camp and lodged in the camp.
12. [FC] And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and athe priests took up the
Ark of the LORD. [Now there is no indication that it was the same seven
priests who carried the Ark the day before; as there were many priests, it
may have been on a roster system.]
13. [FC] And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before
the Ark of the LORD, went on continually, and blew with the trumpets; and
the armed forces went on before them; but the remainder of the children on
Israel came after the Ark of the LORD, the priests going on and blowing with
the trumpets.
14. [FC] And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into
the camp; so, they did this for six days.
15. [FC] And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the
dawning of the day, and compassed the city seven times; only on that day
they compassed the city seven times. [Seven being the number of perfection,
of completeness.]
16. [FC] And it came to pass on the seventh time, when the priests blew with
the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, “SHOUT! For the LORD has given
you this city!”
17. [C] “And the city shall be baccursed, even it, and all that are therein; only
Rahab the harlot shall live; she and all that are in her household with her,
because cshe hid the messengers that we sent.
18. [W] “And if you in any wise keep yourselves from the aaccursed thing, lest
you make yourselves accursed; when you take of the accursed thing, and
make the camp of Israel aa curse, and dtrouble it. [Don’t take anything from
this city for yourselves, because you shall become cursed and so will the
camp of Israel.]
19. [C] “But all-of the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass, and iron are
e
consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.
[It is the LORD'S Battle, so He gets all-of the spoils, into His Temple
treasury.]
20. [FP] So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets: and it came
to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpets, and the people

shouted, with a GREAT SHOUT, that the wall fell down aflat, so that the people
went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
[This brings up an interesting question: Does God allow the Hebrews to fight
a war on the Sabbath? The answer appears to be Yes, and it has been
confirmed by several scholars. Man is LORD of the Sabbath; the Sabbath is
not LORD of Man.]

21. [C] And they butterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman,
young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
[Every living thing, everything that had breath was killed with the sword, to
remove the curse.]
22. [C] But Joshua said unto the two men who has spied upon the city, “Go into
the harlot’s house and bring out the thence the woman and all that she has,
c
as you swore unto her. [An oath is sacred and must always be honoured.]
23. [FP] And the young men who were spies went in, and brought our Rahab,
d
and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and
they brought out all-of their kindred, and left them outside the camp of Israel.
[The two spies were able to honour their oath to Rahab and bring them safely
out of the captured city; therefore the blood of this family was no longer
upon their heads.]
24. [FC] And they burnt the city with fire, and all that there was therein: eonly
the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass, and of iron, they put into
the treasury of the house of the LORD.
25. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all
that she had; and fshe dwelled in Israel even unto this day; because she hid
the messengers, which Joshua sent out to spy out Jericho.
26. [P] And Joshua gadjured them at that time, saying; h“Cursed by the man
before the LORD, that rises up and rebuilds this city of Jericho; he shall lay
the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set

Chapter 7: Achan Troubles Israel; Joshua Complains to God.
1. [RC] BUT the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing:
for aAchan (Achar) the son of Carmi, the son of bZabdi (Zimri), the son of
Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took the accursed thing; and the anger of the
LORD was kindled against the children of Israel. [The LORD gave a clear
instruction to Joshua, and Joshua made it very clear to all-of the children of
Israel, that were not to take ANY spoils from the city for themselves, as the
city was accursed; and if anyone did that the whole nation of Israel would be
accursed. But still today, there are people who want to test the boundaries,
to see what they can get away with; not realising that God knows the
intentions of their hearts, even before the commit the act of rebellion against
His word. Therefore the children of Israel had to be taught a lesson.]
2. [C] And Joshua sent me to Ai, which is beside cBethaven, on the eastern side
of dBethel, and spoke unto them, saying, “Go up and view the country". And
the men went up and viewed Ai. [Now Joshua did not ask the LORD should
he go up and attack Ai. Also Achan had disobeyed the LORD'S specific
instructions of taking a defiled thing into the camp of the children of Israel,
so the nation had to be taught a lesson; that they would remember for
generations.].
3. And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, “Let not all-of the people go
up; but let eabout two or three thousand go up and smite Ai; and make not
all-of the people labour there; for they are but a few (people)”. [Over
confidence results in disaster!]
4. So they sent about three thousand men: and fthey fled before the men of Ai.
5. And the men of Ai smote about thirty-
six men: for they chased them from
before the gate even unto Shebarim
and smote them in the going down:
wherefore the hearts of the people
melted and became as water. [A
major change from the previous
successful battle at Jericho.]
6. And Joshua grent his clothes and fell
to the earth upon his face before the
Ark of the LORD until the evening, he
and all-of the elders of Israel, and
h
put dust upon their heads. [Joshua
knew that this defeat was a serious
psychological blow to the nation’s
confidence & He needed answers.]
7. And Joshua said, “Alas, O LORD God, why have you brought this people over
the River Jordan, to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us?
Would to God we had been content to, and dwelt on the eastern side of the
River Jordan”! [At this stage, Joshua thinks that this is the LORD'S doing. He
does not know of the sin within the children of Israel, which is soon to be
revealed.]

enemies”?

9. “For the Canaanites and all-of the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and
shall environ is around, and acut off our name from the earth; And what will
you do unto your great name”?
10. [C] And the LORD said unto Joshua, “Get up off the floor? Why do you blie
(fall) there on your face”? [Why are you lying there on your face? It is not
your fault, but the fault of the whole nation.]
11. [RC] “Israel has sinned, and they have also ctransgressed my Covenant,
which I commanded them: for they have even taken of dthe accursed thing,
and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among
their own stuff. [Notice that the LORD makes a clear distinction between “sin”
and “transgression”. They have committed a sin, because they have stolen
and hidden a forbidden accursed article among their own belongings. They
have broken the covenant, because they have taken the symbol of another
god and will worship it. The Covenant is clear, you shall have no other gods
before me. The fact that it was hidden in their belongings among the children
of Israel, it was clearly BEFORE Him ~ it was staring Him in the face, every
time that He looked at Israel!]
12. *** (Conclusion), eTherefore, the children of Israel could not stand before
their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they
were accursed; neither will I be with you anymore; EXCEPT you destroy the
accursed from among you. [The LORD explains to Joshua, the real reason for
the defeat against Ai; there is an accursed things in the camp of the children
of Israel, and while it there, the LORD will depart from them.]
13. [C] “UP! fsanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves against
tomorrow; For thus says the LORD God of Israel; There is an accursed
thing in the midst of you, O Israel: You cannot stand before your
enemies, until you take the accursed thing from among you’".]
14. *** (Conclusion), “In the morning therefore, you shall be brought according
to your tribes; and it shall be that the tribe that gthe LORD takes, shall come
according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take
shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall
come man by man. [This is the method that the LORD will use to judge the
children of Israel.]
15. [C] h“And it shall be that He that is taken (by the LORD) with the accursed
thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has, because he has
transgressed the Covenant of the LORD, and because he has wrought ifolly
(wickedness) in Israel”. [For these types of sins, you do not get a second
chance, it is death by stoning and then burnt by fire.]
16. [FC] So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel (before the
LORD) by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. [Of all the tribes,
this is supposed to be the most holy tribe, as the LORD will descend from
this tribe; but alas, the enemy has entered into this tribe.]
17. [FC] “And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of jthe
Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man: and Zabdi
was taken,
18. [FC] “And he brought his household man by man; and kAchan the son of
Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, lwas taken.

19. And Joshua said unto Achan, “My son, agive, I pray you, glory to the LORD
God of Israel, and bmake a confession unto Him: and tell me now, what you
have done; hide it not from me. [Confess your crime before the LORD and
the people.]
20. [RC] And Achan answered Joshua, and said, “Indeed I have sinned against
the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done.
21. [RC] “When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two
hundred shekels of silver, and a cwedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then
I coveted them, and took them; and behold they are hidden in the earth in
the midst of my tent, and the silver under it”.
22. So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and behold, it was
hid in his tent and the silver under it.
23. And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto
Joshua, and unto all-of the children of Israel, and dlaid them out before the
LORD.
24. [FP] And Joshua and all-of Israel with him took Achan, the son of Zerah, and
the silver and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his
daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all
that he had; and they brought them unto ethe valley of Achor. [In 4 different
Bible Translations, it does not mention a wife, so it is assumed that she had
already died, and he was a widow.]
25. [FP] And Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The LORD shall trouble
you this day”. And all-of Israel stoned him with stones and burned them with
fire, after they had stoned them with stones. [So the LORD'S judgement was
to remove their name off the face of the earth.]
26. And they fraised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day. So gthe LORD
turned from the fierceness of His anger. Wherefore the name of that place
was called, hThe Valley of iAchor, (The Valley of Trouble) unto this day.

Chapter 8: God encourages Joshua & A New Strategy to Capture Ai.

1. [C] And the LORD said to Joshua, “jFear not, neither be you dismayed; take
all-of the people of war with you, and arise and go up to Ai; See, kI have
given in your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city and his land.
[Now that the nation has been cleansed, go up and take the city, because I
have given the king, the people, the city and the land all to you.]
2. [C] “And you shall do to Ai and her king as you did unto lJericho and her
king; only mthe spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall you take for a prey
for yourselves: Lay you an ambush for the city behind it. [This time you will
be able to keep the spoils, and the cattle, for yourselves; but the people are
all to be killed, and the city burnt down.]
3. [C] So Joshua arose, and all-of the people of war, to go up against Ai: and
Joshua chose out thirty thousand (30,000) mighty men of valour and sent
them away by night. [These were the ambush troops.]
4. [C] And he commanded them saying, “Behold, nyou shall lie in wait against

ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, don the western side of Ai: but
Joshua lodged that night among the people.
10. And Joshua rose up very early in the morning, and numbered the people,
and went up, he and all-of the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
11. And all-of the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up,
and drew near, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of
Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.
12. And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush,
between Bethel and Ai. [So there was still 25,000 men to pose a “dummy
attack” against Ai, to deceive their army.]
13. And when they had set all-of the people, even all-of the host that was on the
north side of the city, and those lying in wait on the west side of the city,
Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
14. And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose
up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and
all-of his people, at a time appointed before the plain; But he eknew not that
there were men laying in waiting in ambush him behind the city.
15. And Joshua and all-of Israel fmade it appear as if they were beaten and fled
by the way of the wilderness.
16. And all-of the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after
them; and they pursued after Joshua, and gwere drawn away from the city.
17. And these was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel;
and they left the city open (and unguarded), and pursued after Israel.
18. [C] And the LORD said unto Joshua, “Stretch out the spear that is in your
hand towards Ai; and I will give it into your hands”. And Joshua stretched
out the spear that was in his hand towards Ai.
19. And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he
stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it, and
hastened and set the city on fire. [As soon as the leader of the ambush army
saw the signal, they charged from their hiding place and entered the city,
overpowering and killing the occupants remaining in the city and setting it
on fire ~ after taking the spoils.]
20. And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the
smoke of the city ascending up into heaven, and they had hno power to flee
this way, or that; and the people that had fled into the wilderness turned

back upon their pursuers. [They realised that they had been tricked when
they saw their city in flames, and their power went out of them.]
21. And when Joshua and all-of Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city,
and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew
the men of Ai.
22. And the other issued out of the city against them; so, they were in-the-midst-
of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side, and they smote them,
so that they alet none of them remain, or escape. [The men of Ai were now
sandwiched between two fighting forces, both determined for the destruction
of the men of Ai.]
23. And the king of Ai, they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
24. And it came to pass when Israel has made and end to slaying all-of the
inhabitants, of Ai in the field, in the wilderness where they chased them, and
where they had all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed,
that all-of the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the
sword.
25. [FP] And so it was, that all that fell that day, both men and women, were
twelve thousand, even all-of the men of Ai.
26. For Joshua did not draw his hand back, wherewith he stretched out his spear,
until he had utterly destroyed all-of the inhabitants of Ai. [Joshua must have
been very strong to keep his arm outstretched for the full duration of the
battle, which must have several hours.]
27. [FP] Only the cattle and the spoil of that city, Israel took for a prey for
themselves, according to the Word of the LORD, which He bcommanded
Joshua.
28. [FP] And Joshua burnt Ai, and
made it ca heap forever, even
a desolation unto this day.
29. dAnd the king of Ai, he hung on
a tree, until eventide. And as
soon as the sun was down
Joshua commanded that they
should take his carcase down
from the tree, and cast it at the
entrance of the gate,, and
e
raise thereon a great heap of
stones, that remain unto this
day. [As per Jewish law, he
was brought down at sundown
and buried under a heap of
stones.]

32. And he wrote thereupon the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which he
wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
33. And all-of Israel and their elders, and dofficers, and their judges, stood on
this of the Ark, and on that side before the priest the Levites, ewhich bare
the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD, as well fthe stranger, as he that was
born among them: half of them over against Mount Gerizim, and half of them
over against Mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded
before, that they should bless the people of Israel. [Notice that the strangers
that were born among them, were to stand on the same side of the altar as
the Levite priests. Neither the Priests, nor the strangers were considered part
of the Tribes of Judah. The priests belonged to God, and the stranger was an
observer, who received protection and blessings from God.]
34. And afterwards, ghe read all-of the words of the Law, hthe blessings and
i
cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
35. There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not
before all-of the congregation of Israel, jwith the women, and the little ones,
and the strangers, that were conversant among them.

Chapter 9: The Gibeonites by Craftiness, Made Bondmen Forever

1. And it came to pass, when all of the kings which were on this side of the
River Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great
sea, over against Lebanon, kthe Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and
the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
2. That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua, and with
Israel, with one laccord. [When you have 5 kings and their armies fighting
against on one accord, with one mind ~ to destroy the children of Israel, you
have a very strong force; but God is stronger!]
3. And when the inhabitants of mGibeon nheard what Joshua had done unto
Jericho, and to Ai.

rent, and bound up;
5. [L] And old shoes and clouted upon their feet; and old garments upon them;
now all-of the bread was dry and mouldy.
6. *** (Conclusion), [L] And they went to Joshua aunto the camp at Gilgal, and
said unto him, and to the men of Israel, “We be come from a far country:
now therefore, make you a league with us". [Satan’s number one weapon is
to “Deceive” his enemy, and this is exactly what is happening here. They are
deliberately lying to save their tribe from annihilation.]
7. And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, “Peradventure you dwell among
us; and how shall we make a league with you”?
8. And they said unto Joshua; “We are your servants”, And Joshua said unto
them, “Who are you? And from where do you come”? [They lied to protect
their tribe from extinction.]
9. [L] And they said unto him, b“From a very far country thy servants are come
because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have cheard the fame of
Him, and all that He did in Egypt.
10. [L] “And all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond
the River Jordan (on the eastern side of the River Jordan) to King Sihon king
of Heshbon, and to King Og king of Bashan, which was at dAshtaroth. [There
is just a little bit of truth in what they are saying but, but the intention of
their hearts is towards trickery and deception.]
11. *** (Conclusion), “Wherefore our elders and all-of the inhabitants of our
country spoke to us saying, “Take victuals ewith you for the journey, and go
to meet them, and say unto them, ‘WE are your servants: Therefore, now
make you a league with us’. [This group of people lied through their teeth,
to deceive Joshua and the Children of Israel ~ just like other people are doing
to Israel right now since 7th October 2023.]
12. [L] “This is our bread we took hot for our provisions out of our houses on the
day we come forth to go unto you: but now, behold, it is dry and it is mouldy:
[It seems logical, BUT it is deception, and the more it continues, then it
seems to be true!]
13. [L] “And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and behold, they
be rent; And these our garments, and our shoes, are become old by reason
of the very long journey. [The evidence they put forward in these verses
“seems to be true”, at first glance, BUT lies are being promoted as TRUTH.
An end-time prophecy already being used back here.]
14. [W] And fthe men took of the victuals and gasked not counsel of the LORD!
[The children of Israel accepted them on the evidence set out before them,
and like their first attack on Ai, they did not seek the guidance of the LORD
in this matter. Sadly, they failed to learn from their previous mistake.]
15. And Joshua hmade peace with them, and made a league with them, to let
them live: and the princes of the congregation swear unto them. [Now the
children of Israel are really in trouble: the princes have sworn an oath before
the LORD and have made peace with this group of people. NOW THE TRUTH
IS TO BE REVEALED!]

16. And it came to pass, at the end of three days, after they had made a league
with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that dwelt
among them.
17. And the children of Israel journeyed, and came into their cities on the third
day. Now their cities were aGibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and
b
Kirjathjearim. [All-of these cities could have belonged to the children of
Israel, BUT because of the trickery of the Gibeon’s, and the vow of the Princes
of Israel, they could not claim them.]
18. And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the
congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all-of the
congregation murmured against the Princes.
19. *** (Conclusion), But all-of the princes said unto all-of the congregation,
“WE have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we
may not touch them. [Even though they had been tricked into making the
vow, they respected that vow before God more than the instruction to kill all-
of the people, before them.]
20. [FP] “This we will do unto them: we will even let them live, lest wrath (of
God) be upon us, because of the oath that we swore unto them.
21. ‘And the princes said unto them; Let them live; but let them be chewers of
wood, and drawers of water unto all-of the congregation; as the princes had
promised them.
22. [C] And Joshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, “Why have
you beguiled us saying, d‘We are very far from you; when you dwell among
us”? [Now come clean with the truth; Why did you lie to us? Why did you say
that you lived far away?]
23. *** (Conclusion): Now therefore, you are ecursed, and there shall be fnone
of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of
water for the house of my God. [Because of your trickery & lies, you shall be
bondmen all the days of your life.]
24. *** (Conclusion): And they answered Joshua, and said, “ Because it was
certainly told your servants, how that the LORD your God commanded His
servant Moses, to give you all-of the land, and to destroy all-of the
inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore gwe were sore afraid of our
lives because of you, and have done this thing. [We did this deception to
save our lives, because we knew that your God had commanded Moses to
destroy all of the inhabitants of the land before them.]
25. “And now, behold, we are hin your hand: as it seems unto you to do unto us,
(therefore) do. [Now that you know the reason, we now are at your mercy;
do unto us as you see fit.]
26. And so did he (Joshua) unto them, and delivered them out of the hands of
the children of Israel, that they slew them not.
27. And Joshua imade them that day, hewers of wood, and drawers of water for
the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the
place which He should choose.

Chapter 10: Five Kings Oppose Gibeon; the Sun & Moon Stand Still
1. And it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how
Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it; aas he had done to Jericho
and her king, as he had done to bAi and her king; and chow the inhabitants
of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them. [Adonizedek
~ means Lord of Righteous, and He is king of Jerusalem and that is really a
prophetic statement.]
2. That they dfeared greatly because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the
e
royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all-of the men thereof
were mighty. [Now that Joshua had aligned with the Gibeonites, they were
now a greater force than they were when they conquered Jericho and Ai;
they were now shaking in their boots, because they could be next.]
3. Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of fHebron,
and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of gLachish, and unto
Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4. [C] “Come up unto me, and help me that we might smite Gibeon: for it has
made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. [Come and join me
to smite Gibeon because they have made a peace treaty with Joshua, as a
warning to others not to do the same.]
5. *** (Conclusion): Therefore, the five kings of the Amorites, the king of
Jerusalem, the king of hHebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the
king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, and encamped
before Gibeon, and made war against it.
6. And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua ito the camp at Gilgal, saying, “Slack
not your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly , and save us, and
help us: for all-of the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are
gathered together against us. [Now these Gibeons had tricked him before
and He still did not check with the LORD before moving his whole army to
the assistance of the Gibeons.]
7. So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all-of the people of war with him,
and all-of the mighty men of valour.
8. [P] And the LORD said unto him, “Joshua, jFear them not; for I have delivered
them into your hand; there shall not a man of them stand before you". [And
the LORD gave Joshua the assurance that he should go up against these 5
kings and their vast armies, because the LORD was going to deliver them
into the hands of Joshua.]
9. *** (Conclusion): Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up
from Gilgal all night. [Even after marching all night, they had strength enough
to start the battle and then chase these armies.]
10. [FP] And the LORD kdiscomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a
great slaughter, at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goes up to
l
Beth-horon and smote them to mAzekah and unto nMakkedah. [ Even though
Joshua had to split his army into smaller fighting forces, the LORD still gave
them victory.]

11. [FP] And it came to pass as they fled from before
Israel, and were going down to Beth-horon, athat
the LORD cast down great stones from heaven
upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were

children of Israel slew with the sword. [Here again
the LORD proves His faithfulness to Israel, by
intervening with great stones from heaven, to kill
more enemies with the hailstones than the Israeli
army can kill with swords. His event alone will put
fear into other kings of the region.]
12. [C] Then spoke Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up
the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,
b

a time, so that the battle could be concluded in daylight.]
13. [FC] And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of
d
Jashar?
The Topical Encyclopedia states:
The Book of Jashar, also known as the "Book of the Upright" or "Book of the Just,"
is a non-canonical text referenced in the Old Testament. It is considered a lost
work, as no known copies exist today. The Book of Jashar is mentioned explicitly
in two passages of the Bible, suggesting its historical and literary significance
during the biblical era.
Biblical References:
1. Joshua 10:13 : "So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped until the nation
took vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? So
the sun stood still in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full
day." This passage describes a miraculous event during the conquest of
Canaan, where Joshua commands the sun and moon to stand still to allow the
Israelites more time to defeat their enemies. The reference to the Book of
Jashar suggests that this event was recorded in that text, indicating its role as
a historical document.
2. 2 Samuel 1:18 : "and he ordered that the sons of Judah be taught the Song of
the Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar." This verse refers to David's lament
over the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, known as the "Song of the Bow." The
mention of the Book of Jashar implies that it contained poetic or musical
compositions, possibly serving as a collection of songs or heroic tales.
Nature and Content:
The exact nature and content of the Book of Jashar remain speculative due to its
lost status. However, the biblical references suggest that it was a compilation of
songs, poems, or historical accounts celebrating the deeds of Israel's heroes. The
term "Jashar" translates to "upright" or "just," which may indicate that the book
focused on the righteous acts and valour of its subjects.

Historical and Theological Significance:
The Book of Jashar holds historical significance as it is cited as a source for events
recorded in the canonical texts. Its mention in the context of miraculous events
and royal laments suggests that it was regarded as an authoritative source of
Israel's history and culture. Theologically, the references to the Book of Jashar
underscore the importance of remembering and celebrating God's interventions
and the faithfulness of His people.
Speculations and Traditions:
Throughout history, various Jewish and Christian traditions have speculated about
the contents and purpose of the Book of Jashar. Some have suggested that it was
a collection of nationalistic songs or a chronicle of Israel's early history. Others
have posited that it served as a didactic tool, teaching moral and spiritual lessons
through the accounts of Israel's ancestors.
Despite its absence from the biblical canon, the Book of Jashar's mention in
Scripture highlights its once-prominent role in the cultural and religious life of
ancient Israel. Its legacy endures through the biblical narratives that reference it,
offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Israel's historical and spiritual heritage.
14. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened
unto the voice of a man: for athe LORD fought for Israel. [Maybe we need to

15. And Joshua returned and all-of Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
16. But these five kings fled and hid themselves in a cave at bMakkedah.
17. And it was told to Joshua, saying, “The five kings are found hidden in a cave

18. [C] And Joshua said, “Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set

19. [C] “And stay you not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the

after sealing up the cave but hurry and kill the stragglers. Don’t let any of
the enemy return back to their cities, for the LORD has delivered all-of them
into your hands.]
20. And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an
end of slaying them with a great slaughter, cuntil they were all consumed,
that the rest which remained of them, entered into fenced cities.
21. And all-of the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace:

22. [C] Then said Joshua, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out these five

23. And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave,
the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of
Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24. [C] And it came to pass when they brought out these kings unto Joshua, that
Joshua called for all-of the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the
men of war which went with him, “Come near, put your feet upon the necks
of these kings”. And they came near and put their feet upon the necks of
them.

five trees: and they cwere hanging upon the trees until evening. [This fulfilled
the promise that not one of the enemy who fought against the children of

commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the
cave, wherein they had been hiding, and dlaid great stones in the cave’s
mouth, which remain there until this day. [This was a warning to all-of the
other kings who still had to decide, if they were going to attempt to attack
the children of Israel. God said He is going to give us this land. If you decide
to attack us, THEN God will step in and demolish you.]
28. And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword,

and to her king. [Joshua is fully obeying the LORD'S instructions to kill all-of
the inhabitants, and leave none alive.]
40. [FP] So Joshua smote all-of the country of the hills, and of the south, and of
the vale, and bof the springs, and all-of their kings; he left none remaining,
but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel had
commanded. [When you obey the commandments of the LORD, you are
protected, and you are blessed.]
41. [FP] And Joshua smote them from cKadesh Barnea even unto dGaza, and all-
of the country of eGoshen, even unto Gibeon. [In 1406 BC, these events took
place. That is when Israel became the owner of the land of Gaza, as
commanded by the LORD God of Israel. Therefore, all-of these worldly
arguments are irrelevant! Not one worldly nation is greater than the creator
of the universe!]
42. [FP] And all-of these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time,
because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
43. And Joshua returned, and all-of Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

very many. [This was to be the biggest battle force that Joshua has had to
face so far, but his is not afraid ~ for the LORD is with him.]
5. And when all-of these kings were amet together, they came and pitched
together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel. [God is moving the
pawns into place, for another major battle and victory for the children of
Israel.][P] And the LORD said unto Joshua, “bBe not afraid because of
them: for tomorrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain
before Israel: You shall chough their horses, and burn dtheir chariots
with fire. [You are to disable the horses by cutting their hamstrings &
burning their chariots by fire.]

6.
[FP] And the LORD delivered them
into the hand of Israel, who smote
them, and chased them unto egreat
Zidon (Zidon-Rabbah), and unto
Misrephoth-maim, and unto the
valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they
smote them, until they left none
remaining. [As the LORD promised,
they would all be delivered dead into
their hands.]
7. [FP] And the LORD did unto them as
the LORD bade him: he houghed their
horses ~ and burnt their chariots with
fire. [It may seem a cruel thing to do
to hamstring all-of the horses, but it
made them impossible to be ever
used again to pull a chariot. The
chariots Joshua destroyed by fire.]
8. And Joshua at that time turned back,
and took Hazor, and smote the king
thereof with the sword: for Hazor
before time was the head of all-of the
kingdoms. [Before the king of Hazor
had time to regroup, Joshua turned
back and defeated him.]
9. And they smote all-of the souls that
were therein with the edge of the
sword, utterly destroying them; there
were not fany left to breathe: and he
burnt Hazor with fire.
10. [FC] And all-of those cities of those
kings, and all-of the kings of them,
did Joshua take, and smote them with
the edge of the sword, and he utterly
destroyed them, gas Moses the
servant of the LORD commanded.
11. [FC] But, as for the cities that stood still hin their strength, Israel burned
none of them, save (except) Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

12. [FC] And all-of the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel
took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of
the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
13. [FC] aAs the LORD commanded Moses, His servant, so bdid Moses command
Joshua, and cso did Joshua: he dleft nothing undone of all that the LORD
commanded Moses.
14. [FC] So Moses took all-of that land, ethe hills, and all-of the south country,
f
and all-of the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the
mountain, of Israel, and the valley of the same:
15. [FC] Even from gthe Mount Halak, that goes up to hSeir, even unto Baal gad,
in the valley of Lebanon, under iMount Hermon: and all-of their kings he
took, and smote them, and slew them.
16. Joshua made war a long time with all-of these kings.
17. There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save jthe
Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. [The
commandments of the LORD given to Moses, were fulfilled in the next
generation of leadership by Joshua.]
18. [FC] For kit was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they came against
Israel in battle, that He might destroy them utterly, and that they might have
no favour, but that He might destroy them, as the LORD command Moses.
[This was God’s plan. Harden the hearts of their enemies to come up against
Israel to battle; where He will confuse them and have Joshua destroy them
utterly.]
19. [FC] And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the
mountains, from lHebron, from mDebir, from Anab, and from all-of the
mountains of Judah, and from all-of the mountains of Israel: Joshua
destroyed them utterly with their cities. [Even though they were giants like
Goliath, Joshua and his army was not afraid of them, because the LORD was
with him.]
20. [FP There were none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel;
only in nGaza, in oGath, and in pAshdod there remained. [There was a small
remnant that remained in these three provinces, and the LORD will deal with
them in due course.]
21. [FC] [FP] So Joshua took the whole land, qaccording to all that the LORD
said unto Moses; and rJoshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel, according
to their divisions by their tribes; and the land rested from war.

Hermon, and all-of the plains of the east: [Here in this chapter is the historical
proof that all-of this land belongs to Israel, from 1406 BC, conquered by
Moses and then by Joshua, until eternity, because the LORD God of Israel
promised it to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel) in an eternal covenant.]

and Ephraim was allocated land

inside the Promised Land.]
5. [FP] As the LORD commanded

did, and they divided the land.

because you have wholly followed the LORD my God".

border was drawn to Shicron, and passed along to Mount Baalah, and went
out unto Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.
12. [FC] And the western border was dto the great sea, and the coast thereof.
This is the coast of the children of Judah round about, according to their
families. [The great sea refers to the Mediterranean Sea and its coasts
thereof.]
13. [FC] And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh, he gave a part among the children
of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even ethe
city of Arba, the father of Anak, which city is Hebron. [This fulfills the
commandment that the LORD gave to Moses which proclaimed that the land
on which He had placed his feet and explored when sent out to spy out the
land as one of the 12 spies, would be given to him and his descendants, for
ever.]
14. [FC] And Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and
Talmai, the sons of Anak.
15. And he went up there to the inhabitants of Debir; and the name of Debir
before was Kirjath Sepher.
16. [P] fAnd Caleb said, “He that smites Kirjath Sepher, and takes it, to him will
I give Achsah my daughter to wife.” [Notice that the daughter will have no
say in this decision at all. The daughter will obey her parents and marry the
soldier that captures Kirjath Sepher, whoever he is.]
17. [FP] And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and Joshua
gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. [So, Achsah is to marry her cousin
Othniel.]
18. And it came to pass, as she came unto him, that she moved him (Othniel) to
ask her father for a field; and she alighted off her ass; and Caleb said unto
her, “What do you want of me”?
19. Achsah answered, saying, “Give me a gblessing, for you have given me a
south land; hgive me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper
springs, and the nether (back) springs. [For a dowry you have given me the
land in the south, but now give me a blessing, by giving me springs of water
with this land. And Caleb honoured her request by giving her two springs, to
nourish their crops on the land.]
20. [FP] This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to
their families.

Chapter 16: The Borders of the Sons of Joseph

1. [FC] And the lot of the children of Joseph afell(went forth) from the River
Jordan by Jericho, unto the water Jericho on the east, to bthe wilderness that
goes up from Jericho, throughout Mount Bethel.
2. [FC] And goes out from Bethel to cLuz, and passes along the border to Archi,
to Ataroth,
3. [FC] And goes down westwards towards the coast of Japhleti, unto the coast
of dBeth Horon on the nether (on the rear), and to Gezer; and the goings out
are at the sea. [So, the sons of Joseph have an outlet to the sea.]
4. [FC] So the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their
inheritance.
5. [FC] And the borders of the children of the tribe of Ephraim according to their
families was thus: even the border of their inheritance on the eastern side
of Ataroth Adar, unto Beth Horon on the upper.
6. [FC] And the border went out towards the sea to Michmethah on the northern
side; and the border went about eastward unto Taanath Shiloh and passed
by it on the east to Janohah;
7. [FC] And it went down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came
to Jericho, and went out at the River Jordan;
8. [FC] The border went out from Tappuah westward unto the river Kanah: and
the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of
the children of Ephraim by their families.
9. [FC] And ethe separate cities for the children of Ephraim were among the
inheritance of the children of Manasseh, and of their cities with their villages.
[This is a major difference to the other tribes; which had their own specific
cities and villagers allocated to them for their inheritance. Here, the cites of
both tribes of Jospeh “MUST SHARE” ALL-OF THE CITIES.]
10. [FC] And they drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the
Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites unto this day, and fserve under
tribute. [The Canaanites were required to pay a tribute tax each year to the
Ephraimites to continue to live within the land assigned to the Children of the
tribe of Ephraim.]

Chapter 17: The Lot and the Coast of the Tribe of Manasseh
1. *** (Conclusion): [FC] There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he
was the afirstborn of Joseph (entitled to a double portion): to wit, for Machir
the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead; because he was a man of war,
therefore he had bGilead and Bashan.
2. There was also a lot for the crest of the children of Manasseh by their families;
for the children of dAbiezer (Jeezer), and for the children of Helek, and for the
children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of
Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of
Manasseh, the son of Joseph, by their families.
3. BUT Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh,
had no sons, but only daughters; and these are the names of his daughters,
Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah Milcah, and Tirzah. [This is where land inheritance
becomes available to daughters, where a father who has no sons.]
4. *** (Conclusion), [FP] And they came near before eEleazar the priest, and
before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, “The LORD
commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore,
according to the commandment of the LORD, he gave them an inheritance
among the brethren of their father. [Because the LORD had commanded Moses
to give land to the daughters of fathers who has no sons, this is where the
lineage of inheritance could pass from a father to a daughter, IF the father has
only daughters. This was to prevent the inheritance passing to another family
within the tribe, as these daughters must always marry within their own tribe.]
This now brings us to a challenge as Christians: Here we see Eleazar, the
High Priest, Joshua, son of Nun, and all-of the princes of the tribes of
Israel, all following the LORD'S Commandments to the letter.
So why do Christian Church leadership decide “to pick and choose” which
scriptures in the Holy Bible that they are going to follow?
My statement may sound gross, but it needs to be said. Jesus IS the word
of God, ALL-OF IT, not just SOME OF IT: Jesus went to the cross and
willingly gave up ALL-OF HIS LIFE (not just some of it), so that we could
have an opportunity to be reconciled back to the Father, through the
blood of His Son, who died for us.
*** (Conclusion): Therefore, why do MOST CHURCHES ignore some of
HIS WORD? Why do you try to say that the FIRST day of the week is holy,
when the WORD of God in many places clearly states that the SEVENTH
day is Holy.
Yes, you can worship on any do of the week, BUT you cannot state that
the FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK IS HOLY, thus rebelling against God’s word,
because worship & holiness are two totally different things. Yes, you can
go to your church to worship on Sundays, BUT you still must keep the
Sabbath HOLY and not do any work on the Sabbath. When you are
confronted by Jesus and you are asked this question by Him, how are you
going to answer for your rebellion against His Holy Word? You cannot say
it is tradition! Sin is tradition; Holiness is obedience to God’s WORD, ALL-
OF IT!
5. [FC] And there fell ften portions to Manasseh, gbeside the land of Gilead and
Bashan, which were on the eastern side of the River Jordan: [The land on
the eastern side of the River Jordan had already been allocated to the half
tribe of Manasseh by Moses when they conquered the land from the
Amorites.]

7. [FC] And the coast Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lies before
a
Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand of the inhabitants of
En-Tappuah.
8. [FC] Now, Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah, on the border
of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim; [This one of the shared
cities as referred to in chapter 16, verse 9.]
9. And the coast descended unto the briver Kanah, southward of the river:
c
these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast of
Manasseh was also on the northern side of the river, and the outgoings of it
were at the sea.
10. [FC] To the south of it (the river) was Ephraim’s, and to the north it was
Manasseh’s, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the
north, and in Issachar in the east.
11. d
And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher eBeth-Shean and her towns, and
Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor, and her towns, and the
inhabitants of fEndor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her
towns, and the inhabitants of gMegiddo and her towns, even three countries.
12. Yet hthe children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of these
cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
13. Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they
put the Canaanites to itribute; but did not utterly drive them out.
14. And jthe children of Joseph spoke unto Joshua saying, “Why have you given
me but kone lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am la great people,
forasmuch as the LORD has blessed me hitherto? [God has said through
Moses that each tribe would be assigned land by the drawing of lots and each
tribe would be allocated land in proportion to the size of each tribe. But now
Manasseh is getting greedy.]
15. [CP] And Joshua answered them, “[IF] you be a great people, [THEN] get
you up to mthe wood country, and cut down for yourself there in the land of
the Perizzites and of the ngiants, [IF] oMount Ephraim be too narrow for you".
[Joshua issues a challenge to the leaders of the tribe of Manasseh; “[IF] you
are so great, [THEN] prove it! Go up into the hill country and capture the
land of the Perizzites and the giants, if you thinks that Mount Ephraim is too
small for you".]
16. And the children of Joseph said, “The hill is not enough for us: and all-of the
Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have pchariots of iron, both
they who of Beth Shean and her towns, and they who are qof the valley of
Jezreel". [But the children of Joseph complained that the enemy had
chariots!]
17. [C] And Joshua spoke unto the House of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to
Manasseh saying, “You are a great people, and have great power: you shall
not have one lot only:
18. [P] “But the mountain shall be yours; for it is wood, and you shall cut it down;
and the outgoings of it shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites,

Chapter 18: The Remainder of the Land is Divided by Lot.

1. [FP] And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together
a
at Shiloh and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land
was subdued before them.
2. And there remained among the children of Israel, seven tribes which had
not yet received their inheritance.
3. [C] And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, “bHow long are you slack to
go and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers has given to
you? [“Why are you sitting on your hands? The LORD God of your fathers
has already given this land to you; when are you going to go and possess
it”?]
4. [C] “Give out from among you three men for each tribe; and I will send them,
and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the
inheritance of them; and they shall again unto me. [Joshua commanded them
to select 3 men from each of the remaining 7 tribes, to go out and survey
the land which had been given to them, and come back to him and report
their findings.]
5. [C] “And they shall divide it into seven parts: cJudah shall abide in their coast
on the south, and dthe house of Joseph shall abide in their coasts in the north.
6. *** (Conclusion), [C] “You shall therefore describe the land into seven parts,
and bring these descriptions unto me, ethat I may cast lots for you here
before the LORD our God. [Notice in the previous verses of this chapter,
Joshua refers to the LORD God of our fathers, and now he is referring to the
LORD OUR God; Joshua is reminding them that the God of their fathers and
the God that they are serving now ~ is the SAME GOD. Christians must ALSO
remember that the God that we serve is also the SAME GOD, as the God of
Moses; except we may have a greater revelation of who that God really is.]
7. [C] f“BUT the Levites have no part (no inheritance) among you; for the
priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance; gand Gad, and Reuben, and half
of the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance, on the eastern side
of the river Jordan, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.
8. [C] And the men arose and went away: and Joshua charged them that went
to describe the land, saying, “Go and walk through the land, and describe it,
and come again to me, that I may cast lots for you before the LORD in
Shiloh.”
9. [FC] And the men went out and passed through the land, and described it by
cities into seven parts in a book, and came again to Joshua to the host at
Shiloh. [This is interesting, the KJV says that it was recorded in a book, whilst
the Peshitta Bible, (translated from the original Syriac texts) states that it
was recorded on a scroll). It could not have been recorded in the Hebrew
text, as the Hebrew language was not invented in its written form for another
1,000 years; so it must have been recorded in the Egyptian written
language.]

portions of larger sized lands,
and the smaller tribes received
smaller portions.]

the children of Judah and
the children of Joseph.
12. [C] And their border on

16. [C] And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lies before
the valley of the son of Hinnom, and which is in athe valley of the giants on
the north, and descended to the bvalley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on
the south, and descended to Enrogel.
17. [C] And was drawn from the north, and went forth to En Shemesh, and went
forth toward Geliloth, which is over against the going up of Adummim, and
descended to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben.
18. [C] And passed along towards the side over against Arabah northward, and
went down unto Arabah.
19. [C] And the border passed along the side of Beth Hoglah northward: and the
outgoings of the border were at the north cbay of the salt seat the southern
end of the River Jordan: this was the south coast.
20. [C] And the River Jordan was the border of it on the eastern side. This was
the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the coasts thereof round
about, according to their families.
21. Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, according to their
families were; dJericho, and Beth Hoglah, and the valley of Keziz.
22. And Beth Arabah, and Zemaraim, and Bethel,
23. And Avim, and Parah, and Ophrah,

27. And Rekem, and Irpeel, and Taralah,
28. And Zelah, Eleph, and eJebusi, (which is Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kirjath;
fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of
Benjamin according to their families.

The Tribe of Simeon
1. [FP] And the second lot came forth for
Simeon, even for the children of the

Simeon, according to their families.
9. *** (Conclusion), Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the
inheritance of the children of Simeon: for the part (of the allotment) for the
children of Judah was too much for them: therefore, the children of Simeon
had their inheritance inside the inheritance of them (the allotment of Judah).
The Tribe of Zebulun
10. [FP] And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to this
families: and the borders of their inheritance was unto Sarid:
11. And their border went up atoward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to
Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam,

twelve cities and their villages.
16. This is the inheritance of the children of the tribe of Zebulun according to

23. This is the inheritance of tribe of the children of Issachar according to their
families, the cities and their villages.
The Tribe of Asher.

Bethemek, and Neiel, and goes out to Cabul on the left-hand side,
28. And Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto the agreat
Zidon,
29. And then the coast turns towards to Ramah, and to the strong city of bTyre:
and the coast turns towards Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea
from the coast to Achzib,
30. Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty-two cities and their associated
villages.
31. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher, according to their
families, these cities with their villages.
The Tribe of Naphtali
32. [FP] The sixth lot came out to the children of the tribe of Naphtali, even for
the children of Naphtali according to their families.
33. And their coast was from Heleph, from Allon, to Zaanannim, and Adami, to
Nekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakum; and the outgoings thereof were at the River
Jordan,
34. And then the coast turned westward to Aznoth Tabor, and goes out from
there to Hukkok, and reaches to Zebulun, on the south side, and reaches to
Asher on the western side, and to Judah upon the River Jordan on the eastern
side (towards the sun rising).
35. And the fenced cities are: Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and
Chinnereth,
36. And Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor,
37. And Kedesh, and Edrei, and En-hazor,
38. And Iron, and Migdalel, Horem, and Bethanath, and Bethshemesh: nineteen
cities with their villages.
39. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali, according to
their families, the cities and their villages.
The Tribe of Dan
40. [FP] And the seventh lot came out for
the tribe of the children of Dan
according to their families. [The lot for
Dan is bounded by Ephraim in the
north, Benjamin on the east, Judah on
the south, and the Mediterranean Sea
on the west.]
41. And the coast of their inheritance was
Zorah and Eshtaol, and Irshemesh,
42. And Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and
Jethlah,
43. And Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron,

45. And Jehud, and Beneberak, and Gathrimmon,
46. And Mejarkon, and Rakkon, with the border abefore bJapho (Joppa.)
47. *** (Conclusion): And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for
them: therefore, the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and
took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt
therein, and called Lesham, Dan, after the name of their father.
48. This is the inheritance of the tribe of Dan according to their families, these
cities with their villages.
49. When they had made an end of dividing the land for an inheritance by their
coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun,
among them:
50. [C] According to the Word of the LORD, they gave him the city which he
asked, even cTimnath Serah, in Mount Ephraim: and he built the city and
dwelt therein.
51. These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the high priest, and Joshua, son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided
by lot din Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the Tabernacle of the
Congregation. So, they made an end of dividing the country.

Chapter 20: The Six Cities of Refuge

1. [C] The Lord also spoke unto Joshua, saying,
2. [C] Speak to the children of Israel, saying, “eAppoint out for you cities of
refuge, whereof I spoke unto you by the hand of Moses: [The LORD is
reminding Joshua that just because Moses has died, the instructions that the
LORD gave to the nation of Israel through him, have not been rescinded;
because the LORD’s word remains forever.]
3. [C] “That the slayer that kills any person unawares and unwittingly may flee
there: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.
4. [C] “And when he does flee to one of those cities, he fshall stand at the
entering of the gate of the city and shall declare his cause in the ears of the
elders of that city, and they shall take him into the city unto them, and give
him a place, that he may dwell (in safety) among them.
5. [C] “And if the avenger of blood pursue after him then they shall not deliver
up the slayer into his hand: because he smote his neighbour unwittingly and
hated him not before time. [The LORD makes it very clear to Joshua that the
refuge city is responsible for the protection of any person who comes and
declares his deed and seeks refuge. This is similar today’s societies’ version
of a refuge city ~ called political asylum.]
6. [C] “And he shall dwell in that city, guntil he stands before the ‘Congregation
of Judgement’, and until the death of hthe high priest that shall be in those
days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his
own house, unto the city from where he fled.

and hGolan in Bashan, out of the half-tribe of Manasseh.
9. [FC] These were the cities appointed (sanctified) for all-of the children of
Israel, and for ithe stranger that sojourns among them, that whosoever kills
any person unawares, might flee there, and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood, until he stood before that Congregation of Judgement.

6. [FC] And athe children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe
of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali,
and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, in Bashan, thirteen cities.
7. [FC] The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben,
and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.
8. [FC] And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with
their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
9. [FC] And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the
tribe of the children of Simeon, these cites which are here bmentioned by
name.

which is the city of Hebron, ein the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs
thereof round about it.
12. [FC] But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, they gave to Caleb,
the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
13. [FC] Thus, they gave to the children of Aaron the High Priest, cHebron and
her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the for the slayer; and Libnah with her
suburbs.
14. [FC] And Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs,
15. [FC] And fHolon (aka Hilen) with her suburbs, and Debir with her suburbs,
16. [FC] And gAin (aka Ashan) with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs,
and Bethshemesh with her suburbs: nine cities out of htwo tribes.
17. [FC] And put of the tribe of Benjamin, iGibeon with her suburbs, jGeba (aka
Gaba) with her suburbs,
18. [FC] kAnathoth with her suburbs, and lAlmon (aka Alemeth) with her
suburbs: four cities.
19. [FC] All-of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their
suburbs.
20. [FC] And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained
of the children of Kohath, even they had the of their lot out of the tribe of
Ephraim.
21. [FC] For they gave them mShechem with their suburbs in Mount Ephraim to
be a city of refuge for the slayer; and nGezer with her suburbs,
22. [FC] And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and oBeth Horon with her suburbs: four
cities.

believed to be a misreading of "Bileam" (or Ibleam in Joshua 17:11), as
the proper listing in 1 Chronicles 6:56-85 would have it instead of a second
Gath Rimmon. This to show all-of the people who state that there are no
mistakes in the KJV, that their statement is NOT true! In the Jerusalem Bible,
published in 1996, this has been corrected stating that the second “Gath
Rimmon was Jibleam ~ which is close to “Ibleam” mentioned above]
26. [FC] All-of their cities were ten, with their suburbs, for the families of the
children of Kohath that remained.
27. [FC] bAnd unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of

33. [FC] All-of the cities of the Gershonites, according to their families were
thirteen cities with their suburbs.

40. So, all-of the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were
remaining of the families of the Levites, by their lot were twelve cities.

44. [FC] And the LORD bgave them rest round about, according to all that He
swore unto their fathers: and cthere stood not a man of all-of their enemies
before them; the LORD delivered all-of their enemies int their hand. [This is
a clear example of God’s faithfulness; When God make a promise, He never
breaks it. He may sometimes delay it (like the destruction of Nineveh), but
He always keeps His promises. We have to learn to trust Him more. If God
says there is going to be world-war III, it will happen. If God says that Jesus
is coming back to personally select the people for His Bride, by calling them
to “come up here”, then it will happen right on time, according to God’s time
plan; not ours!]
45. [FC] dThere failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken
unto the house of Israel; all came to pass!
Chapter 22: Two-and one-half Tribes Dismissed with a Blessing.
1. Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh,
2. [C] And said unto them, “You have kept eall that Moses the servant of the
LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded
you:
3. “You have not left your brethren these many days unto this day; but have
kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.
4. *** (Conclusion): “And now fthe LORD your God has given rest unto your
brethren, as He promised them; therefore, now return and get you unto your
tents, and unto the land of your possession, gwhich Moses the servant of the
LORD gave you on the eastern side of the river Jordan.
5. “But htake diligent heed to do the commandments and the law, which Moses
the servant of the LORD charged you, ito love the LORD your God, and to
walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, and to cleave unto Him,
and to serve Him with all-of your heart, and with all-of your soul. [Notice that
Joshua makes a distinction between the “commandments” and the “Law.” In
the New Testament it says to walk in His ways and to cleave unto Him, and
to serve Him, with all-of your heart, with all-of your mind, and with all-of
your strength and then it goes further: to love your neighbour as yourself,
and to love your enemies also.]
6. So, Joshua jblessed them, and sent them away; and they went unto their
own tents. [History says that the battle to secure the Promised Land on the
western side of the River Jordan took seven years, which means that they
were away from their families and their inheritance for seven years.]
7. [C] Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh, Moses had given possession
in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren
on the western side of the River Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away
also unto their tents, then he blessed them. [So, Joshua blessed both half-
tribes of the tribe of Manasseh.]

and wrath fell on all-of the congregation of Israel? And that man perished
not alone in his iniquity.
21. [C] [THEN] the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children
of the half-tribe of Manasseh answered and said unto the heads of thousands
of Israel,

of the children of Israel, making it very clear that they had not made a

so, to take all-of their lives that same day. They then go on to explain what
the building really represented.]

7. [C] “That you acome not among these nations, these that remain among you;
neither bmake mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by
them, nor bow yourselves unto them,
8. [C] “But cleave unto the LORD your God, as you have done unto this day.
9. [C] “For the LORD has driven out from before you, great strong nations” but
as for you, cno man have been able to stand before you unto this day.
10. [C] d“One man of you shall chase away one thousand: for the LORD your God
He it is that fights for you, as He has promised you.
11. *** (Conclusion): “Take good heed therefore unto eyourselves (your souls),
that you (continue to) love the LORD your God.
12. [C] “Else IF you in anywise do go back, and cleave unto the remnants of
these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall fmake marriages
with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
13. [C] “Know for a certainty that gthe LORD your God will not more drive out
any of these nations from before you; just that they shall be snares and traps
unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you
perish from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you. [The
LORD gave you this land and you were commanded to go in and drive out
all-of the inhabitants; but you did not finish this task. Therefore, the LORD is
no longer going to drive anymore nations from before you: Unless you drive
them out from your land, they will be a snare, and a trap, and a sore
discomfort for you, for the rest of your days upon this earth. So, IF you do
not want this discomfort, THEN ki0063k out the nations that are still in your
midst, as you were commanded by the LORD your God.]
14. [C] “And behold this day, hI am going the way of all-of the earth: and you
know in all-of your hearts and in all-of your souls, that inot one thing has
failed of all-of the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning
you; and not one thing has failed thereof.
15. *** (Conclusion): [P] “Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things
are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you: so shall the
LORD bring upon you all evil things; until you have destroyed from
off you this good land which the LORD your God has given you. [There
are many who say that the LORD will never bring evil upon His people. Well,
this verse clearly states that {IF} you fail to obey the word of God {THEN}
the LORD will bring down evil down upon you. So, wake up church!]
16. [P] “When you have jtransgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which
He commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed
yourselves to them, THEN shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against
you, and you shall perish quickly from off this good land which He has given
unto you. [Make no mistake! IF you transgress God’s Covenant which He has
commanded you, THEN He will reduce your lifespan, and you will perish
quickly from off this earth that He has given to you, as your portion.]

Chapter 24: The Covenant of God Renewed & The Stone of Witness.
1. And Joshua gathered all-of the tribes of Israel to aShechem, and bcalled for
the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their
c
officers; and they dpresented themselves before the God.
2. [C] And Joshua said unto all-of the people, “Thus says the LORD God of
Israel; eYour fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in olden ties, even
Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served
other gods.
3. [C] “And I took your father
Abraham from the other side
of the flood, and led him
throughout all-of the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his
seed, and gave him Isaac.
[This was a miraculous birth
through his “real wife” Sarah.]
4. [C] “And I gave unto Isaac,
f
Jacob and Esau: And I gave
unto gEsau Mount Seir to
possess it; hBut Jacob and his
children went down into
Egypt. [The LORD proclaimed
that his descendants would
remain in Egypt 300 years.]
5. [C] “ I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which
i j

I did among them: And afterwards, I brought you out (of Egypt).
6. [C] “And I kbrought your fathers out of Egypt (320 years later) and lyou
came unto the sea: mand the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with
chariots and horsemen unto the Red Sea.
7. [C] “And when they cried out to the LORD, nHe put darkness between you
and the Egyptians, oand He brought the sea down upon them, and covered
them; and pyour eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and you dwelt
in the wilderness a long season.
8. [C] “And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the
eastern side of the River Jordan; qand they fought with you; and I gave them
into your hands, that you might possess their land; and I destroyed them
from before you. [Joshua is reminding them that their first victories were on
the eastern side of the River Jordan, before the crossed over the Jordan river
to enter into the Promised Land.]
9. [C] “Then rBalak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against
Israel, and ssent and called Balaam the son of Boer to curse you,
10. *** (Conclusion): [C] “But I would not hearken unto Balaam; ttherefore, he
blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

12. [C] “And I sent cthe hornet before you, which drove them out from before

13. [C] “And I have given you a land for which you did not labour, and cities
which you built not, and you dwell in them; of the vineyards and the olive
yards which you planted not do you eat.
14. *** (Conclusion): “Now therefore, fear the LORD, and serve Him in sincerity,
and in truth: and eput away the gods which your fathers served on the other
side of the flood and fin Egypt; and serve you the LORD.
15. [C] “And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, gChoose you this day
whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were
on the other side of the flood, or hthe gods of the Amorites, in whose land
you dwell; iBUT as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. [This
is the challenge for every Jew, every Messianic Jew, and every Christian; On
a daily basis, which God do you serve?]
16. And the people answered and said, “God forbid that we should forsake the
LORD, to serve other gods,
17. “For the LORD our Gods, He is that which brought us up and our fathers out
of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great
signs in our sight, and preserved us in all-of the ways wherein we went, and
among all-of the people through whom we passed:
18. *** (Conclusion): “And the LORD drove from before us all-of the people,
even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: Therefore, we will also serve the
LORD; for He IS OUR GOD”.
19. And Joshua said unto the people, j“You cannot serve the LORD: for He as a
k
Holy God; He will not forgive your transgressions, nor your sins. [Notice
again, Joshua makes a distinction between “Transgressions” & “Sins”. They
are NOT the same thing. “Transgression” is to wilfully & know intentionally
that you are going to commit a sin. For example: to lie is a “transgression”;
because you know in your heart that what you are saying is not the truth and
you still say it.]
20. [CP] [IF] you forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, [THEN] He will turn
and do you hurt, and consume you, after He has done you good. [[IF] you
turn away from the LORD and serve other gods,[THEN] the LORD will turn
away from you, He will punish you by removing His protection and blessings
and also reduce your lifespan.]
21. And the people said unto Joshua; “NO! But we will serve the LORD”.
22. And Joshua said unto the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that
l
you have you the LORD, to serve Him”. And they said, “We are witnesses”.

23. *** (Conclusion): “Now therefore, aput away”, said he, “the strange gods
which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel”.
[It is not good enough the “incline your ear” to God; but you must “incline
your heart” to God, which is a deeper commitment.]
24. And the people said unto Joshua, “The LORD our God will we serve, and HIS
voice we will obey”.
25. So, Joshua bmade a Covenant with the people that day, and set them ca
statute and an ordinance in Shechem. [A statute is a law enacted by a
legislative body (like a Parliament or Congress, or in this case by God’s
appointed Leader), while an ordinance is a law enacted by a local government
body (like a city council or county commission). Statutes are typically
broader in scope and apply to a wider area, while ordinances are usually
more specific and apply only within the jurisdiction of the enacting local
government.]
26. And Joshua dwrote these words in the Book of the Law of God, and took ea
great stone, and set it up there funder an oak tree, that was by the sanctuary
of the LORD. [This is an eternal reminder of the oath that was taken by the
children of Israel before God at this place. Whenever the people came to the
sanctuary, they would remember their oath and tell their children of the oath
that was taken before God at this place. This is similar to the cenotaphs that
are erected throughout Australia. Whenever we see one, we are reminded of
the sacrifices of our military personnel, who served and died protecting
freedom in our nation.]
27. *** (Conclusion): And Joshua said unto all-of the people, “Behold, this stone
shall be ga WITNESS unto us; for hit has heard all-of the words the LORD
spoke which He spoke unto is; it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest
you deny your God”.
28. iSo, Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
29. [P] And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua, son of Nun, the
servant of the LORD, died, being one hundreds & ten years old.
30. And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in jTimnath Serah, which
is in Mountr Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
31. And Israel served the LORD all-of the days of Joshua, and all-of the days of
the elders that koutlived Joshua, and which had known all-of the works of the
LORD, that He had done for Israel.
32. And lthe bones of Joseph which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt,
they buried in Shechem, in a parcel of ground mwhich Jacob bought of the
sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem for one hundred npieces of silver: and
it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
33. And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained
to oPhinehas his son, which was given him in pMount Ephraim.

Appendix 1: Recovering The Biblical Borders of Israel

While the world has been glued to the TV, or their social media sites over the last
3 weeks, arguing about who owns what land, and who started the latest conflict
between Hamas and Israel, and that there should be a “TWO STATE SOLUTION”,
there has been no mention about what the Bible says about “the Biblical
Boundaries of Israel” ~ “THE PROMISED LAND.”
Before Israel was a nation, God gave them the name ~ Israel, when He changed
Jacob’s name to Israel, while he was still in Egypt.
Before they took possession of their land, God had already promised that land to
Abram as an eternal covenant.
The Bible clearly lays out the Biblical Boundaries of Israel, and maybe the World
Leaders and the United Nations needs to carefully look at them, because there are
warnings for nations that do not follow them, and God Almighty has promised to
severely punish any nation that has “stolen land for the nation of Israel”.
There are also promises for punishment, for any nation, which supports nations,
that have stolen land from Israel as well.

In Genesis 15:18 it says: In the same day, the LORD made a covenant with
Abram, saying, “Unto your seed have I given this land, from bthe river of Egypt,
unto the great river, the River Euphrates.

a & 11:24; Joshua

b Exodus 23:31; 1:4; 1 Kings 4:21;
Deuteronomy 1:7 2 Chronicles 9:26.

60
And in Genesis 17:8, which says, “And I will give unto thee and your seed after
you, the land awherein (of your journeys) where you are a stranger, all-of the
land of Canaan, for an EVERLASTING POSSESSION, and bI will be their God.
God Almighty gives the boundaries for the Nation of Israel, known as the
Promised Land.
Over time, and because of their disobedience, these borders have been
significantly reduced, as neighbouring nations have stolen land, and now even
complete nations are dwelling within the “original Biblical Borders of Israel”.
The borders referred to are:
1. Dan is described in the Bible as the northernmost city of the Kingdom
of Israel
2. Be’er Sheva is described in the Bible as the southernmost city settled by
the Israelites. Abraham, Isaac and Joseph all spent time in Be’er Sheva
3. The Nile River is Egypt’s primary source of water. At the beginning of
the Israelite’s slavery in Egypt, Pharaoh commanded that all baby boys
be thrown into the Nile (Exodus 1:22), and baby Moshe (Moses) was
placed in the Nile (Exodus 2:3) and drawn from the Nile (Exodus 2:5)
when he could no longer be hidden from the Egyptians. The first two
plagues the God brought upon the Egyptians also began in the Nile
(Exodus 7:14-24), Exodus (7:26-8:11).
4. *** (Conclusion), The Euphrates River is the longest river of Western
Asia and is one of the two defining rivers of Mesopotamia. According to
the Bible, the Euphrates was one of four rivers whose source was a river
flowing from the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:14). Therefore, Israel is
located adjacent to the original Garden of Eden.
5. In the Book of Ezekiel chapters 35 & 36 God Almighty tells the Prophet
that he has not forgotten His promises to Abraham, and that He will
destroy the nations who attacked Israel and stole their land.
6. These nations are all destined to be destroyed completely, and their
cities left as rubble, whilst the Nation of Israel will expand, and the land
will be turned from desert into a beautiful orchard, with a bountiful
harvest. [Anyone who travels to Israel will see that happening for
themselves !]
7. [W] However, there is within these 2 chapters a warning for all
the nations upon the earth. Any nation which mocks Israel, or
aids a nation which mocks Israel, shall be severely dealt with by
the Lord.
8. So let us look at these subject chapters in detail.
9. The next picture shows the 12 Tribes of Israel and their boundaries.
REMEMBER,
THESE ARE THE BIBLICAL BOUNDARIES OF ISRAEL – NOT THE BORDERS TODAY
& THESE ARE THE BOUNDARIES THAT WILL BE RESTORED.

Now we know that God Almighty also promised to restore the nation of Israel in
one day.
[P] Isaiah 66:7-8 says: Before going into labour, she gave birth, before her pains
came, she delivered a male child. Whoever heard of such a thing? Who has ever
seen such a thing? Is a country born in one day? Is a nation brought forth all at
once? For as soon as Zion went into labour, she brought forth her children.
This prophesy came to pass on the 14th May 1948, some 77 years ago.
Amos 9:11-15: [New King James Version]
Israel Will Be Restored
11
“On that day I will raise up The [a]tabernacle of David, which has fallen down,
And [b]repair its damages; I will raise up its ruins, And rebuild it as in the days of
old;
12
That they may possess the remnant of Edom,[c] And all the Gentiles who are
called by My name,” Says the LORD who does this thing.
13
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “When the ploughman shall
overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains
shall drip with sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it.
14
I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste
cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them;
They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.
15
I will plant them in their land, and no longer shall they be pulled up from the
land I have given them,” says the LORD your God.
It is exciting as this prophecy is yet to be fulfilled, but it will happen, because God
Almighty never, ever, breaks His promises.
Let us pray.
