Text: Reusing plastic waste in Cameroon
Plastic waste is a huge problem in our towns and cities. Statistics from the Ministry of the
Environment and Protection of Nature show that more than 600.000 tons of plastic waste is
thrown away in Cameroon each year. Most of this waste is plastic in the forms of bags,
containers and bottles. This plastic waste ends up in streets and rivers. It often blocks drains
and causes flooding. Rivers and lakes become polluted with plastic waste. Natural products
such as vegetables will decompose quickly in nature but plastic can take as long as a hundred
years to decompose. Not only is plastic waste very ugly. But it is also a health hazard.
Municipal councils spend a lot of money clearing the streets and rivers every year. But
everybody in Cameroon needs to help. We can prevent this type of pollution by reusing or
recycling many of these materials. We can also help to clear it up.
One person who is making a difference is Constance GubongTangu. She was tired of
seeing plastic waste in and around Bamenda. So she came up with a clever idea! With the help
of some friends, she set up the New Era Foundation in 2010. This organization teaches women
to collect plastic waste and how to reuse it. They clean the waste and make jewellery and various
crafts with it. They sell the products that they make. The women are environmental
entrepreneurs. They make a living and the environment is cleaner!
There are other initiatives in Cameroon, too. Did you know that plastic waste is used to make
paving tiles in our country? What a great idea !
