BE –SEMESTER 4 (NEW) MID EXAMINATION- JUN 2023

Subject Code: Heat Transfer Date: 23/06/2023

Subject Name: 3140503
Time: 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM Total Marks: 30
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

MARKS CO BT
Q.1 Write some examples to illustrate the importance of heat transfer in various field 03 CO-1 U
of engineering

Q.2 State and explain the following laws relating to thermal radiation and 05 CO-1 U
temperature of a radiating body: Planck’s law, Kirchhoff's Law, Steafan-
Boltzmann law
OR
Q.2 Draw neat sketch of forced circulation evaporator and explain briefly its 05 CO-1 N
construction and working. Also, mention any four characteristics of solutions to
be considered before selecting the evaporator

Q.3 An evaporator is operating at atmospheric pressure. It is desired to concentrate a 07 CO-2 U

feed from 5 % solute to 20 % solute (by weight) at a rate of 5000 kg/h. Dry
saturated steam at a pressure corresponding to the saturation temperature of 399
K (126 0C) is used. The feed is at 298 K (25 0C) and the boiling point rise
(elevation), i.e., B.P.E. (B.P.R.) is 5 K. The overall heat transfer coefficient is
2350 W/(m2·K). Calculate the economy of the evaporator and the area of heat
transfer to be provided. Treating the solution as a pure water and neglecting the
B.P.R., the latent heat of condensation of steam at 399 K is 2185 kJ/kg. Latent
heat of vaporisation of/evaporation of water at 101.325 kPa and 373 K = 2257
kJ/kg. Specific heat of feed = 4.187 kJ/(kg·K)
OR
Q.3 Derive equation for LMTD for counter flow heat exchanger. Also state necessary 07 CO-2 N
assumptions made for it

Q.4 Discuss the physical significance of (i) Prandtl Number (ii) Peclet number. 03 CO-2 R

1
OR
A furnace inside temperature of 2250 K has a glass circular viewing of 6 cm
diameter. If the transmissivity of glass is 0.08, make calculations for the heat loss
from the glass window due to radiation.

Q.5 In a double pipe counter current flow heat exchanger, 10000 kg/h of an oil having 05 CO-2 U
a specific heat of 2095 J/(kg·K) is cooled from 353 K (80 oC) to 323 K (50 oC)
by 8000 kg/h of water entering at 298 K (25 oC). Calculate the heat exchanger
area for an overall heat transfer coefficient of 300 W/(m2 ·K). Take Cp for water
as 4180 J/(kg·K).
OR
Q.5 A 12 cm diameter long bar initially at a uniform temperature of 40 oC is placed 05 CO-2 R
in a medium at 650 oC with a convective co efficient of 22 W/m2K calculate the
time required for the bar to reach2550C. Take k = 20W/m K, ρ =
580 kg/m3 and c = 1050 J/kg K.

Q.6 A nuclear reactor with its core constructed of parallel vertical plates 2.25 m high 07 CO-1 A
and 1.5 m wide has been designed on free convection heating of liquid bismuth.
Metallurgical consideration limits the maximum surfaces temperature of the
plate to 975 0C and the lowest allowable temperature of bismuth is 325 0C.
Estimate the maximum possible heat dissipation from both sides of each plate.
The appropriate correlation for the convection coefficient is
Nu = 0.13 (Gr×Pr)1/3
The thermo physical properties of bismuth are at 650 0C:
μ = 3.12 kg/m-hr
ρ = 104 kg/m3
Cp = 150.7 J/kg-deg k = 13.2 W/m-deg
OR
Q.6 State the method of feeding multiple effect evaporation system. Compare mixed 07 CO-1 A
feed arrangement with parallel feed arrangement in case of multiple effect
evaporation system. State why the economy of single effect evaporator is less
than one and also mention the method of increasing the economy of an
evaporator.

Note: CO means Course Outcome & BT means Bloom’s Taxonomy
