CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

This section generally consists the introduction, background of the

study, theoretical Framework, Conceptual Framework, statement of the

problem, significance of the study, scope and delimitation and definition of

terms.

Introduction

Teenage pregnancy is a serious public health and social problem, with

95% occurring in developing countries. BMC Pregnancy and childbirth (2019)

cited by Anthony Mark Ochen, Primus Che Chi and Stephen Lawoko. Among

familial factors, being married was found to increase the likelihood of teenage

pregnancy. Peer pressure, sexual abuse and lack of control over sex was

observed to increase the likelihood of teenage pregnancy.

This has an impact not only on women's health, but on the socio-

economic status and general well-being of the population. Furthermore, there

is evidence that pregnancy and lactation increase the susceptibility to HIV

infection through immunological changes induced during pregnancy.

In the Philippines, the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health

( RPRH) Law ( RA 10354) enacted by the Senate of the Philippines provides

for the education and counseling on reproductive health, including teenage

pregnancy prevention for young people in schools and communities. This

support the study of researchers the effect of teenage pregnancy among

students who really need a support system for their education.

2

Overall, this study is important because it addresses a major public

health concern that affects the lives of many young people around the world.

By exploring the factors that contribute to teenage pregnancy and the impacts

that it has on senior high school students, this study seeks to contribute to the

development of evidence-based policies and interventions that can help to

reduce the prevalence of teenage pregnancy and support the well-being of

young people.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of teenage

pregnancy among senior high school students. Specifically, the study will

examine the prevalence of teenage pregnancy among senior high school

students, the factors that contribute to teenage pregnancy, and the impacts

that teenage pregnancy has on the academic performance, mental health,

and social and economic well-being of senior high school students. By

providing a comprehensive understanding of the issue, this study seeks to

inform policies and interventions aimed at reducing the prevalence of teenage

pregnancy and mitigating its negative impacts on young people.

3

Background of the Study

In Journal of Social Work in the global community, the purpose of this

study is to review the association between education and teenage pregnancy.

Teenage Pregnancy deters woman from achieving educational goals and

from meximing their human capital. The study was conducted using the

preferred reporting items from systematic reviews and meta analysis

statement. Teenage pregnancy remains an important and complex issue

around the world. And the phenomenon of young parenthood is prevalent

issue in society, and it has been deserved and have negative effects on the

academic performance of selected Senior High School Students.

Nowadays many youth become parents while studying and they may head

them to reduced career opportunities and financial instability. And being a

young parent is the effects of lack access to sex education, parental

guidance, poverty and social pressures. Teenage Pregnancy has long been a

worldwide, social, economic and educational concern for the developed,

developing and underdeveloped countries studies on adolescent sexuality.

Therefore teenage pregnancy, with its associated health and social

consequence for young people and society as a whole, is one of the nations

most important public health issues. And pregnancy among teenagers

especially those at are tertiary institution seen to be an increasing problem.

Teenagers and adolescents have been observed to be sexually active

at age of 19 years, some of them experiencing their first intercourse at a low

age of 12 years. This study examines the literature on schooling for teenage
4

mothers and fathers in order to expose the normalizing discourses that

position, young mothers and fathers as at risk for failure. Through an

exploration of the historical and socio-cultural positioning of teenage parent

over the post few decades, this illustrates the schooled responses to

adolescent parent and school structures and marginalizations.

In additional, this study may contribute to the existing literature on

young parenthood and provide insights into the experiences of teenage

parents in Senior High School. Parental education has repeatedly been

shown to be an important factor in the educational performance of children

and adolescents (Davis Kean 2005)

The researcher observed that many youth is already parents in the age

of 17 and in that age, their life is very hard and many of them lack or don’t

have access in education and this will going to to affect their children in the

future. Also many of the children don’t have a complete family because of the

separation of their parents.

Therefore, the objectives of this study is to contribute on the existing

literature on young parenthood and provide instant into the experience of

teenage parents in Senior High School Students.

5

Theoretical Framework

The study is anchored in Social Learning Theory by Aker's social

learning theory, according to this theory, individuals learn from observing and

imitating the behaviors of others. Young parents may not have had the

opportunity to develop good study habits and academic skills before

becoming parents, and their children may be less likely to develop these skills

without positive role models.

This theory is related to the present study because nowadays the

adolescents who is already parents are experiencing different difficulties and

this will affect their children especially to those young parent who still

studying.

In conclusion there is the need to build Social Learning among

community members regarding their support to improve the psychosocial well-

being of adolescents during early parenthood.

Conceptual Framework

Based on the foregoing theoretical framework, the researcher comes up

with the research paradigm that underscores the flow of this undertaking.

The study was guided by the conceptual model utilizing the IV-DV

Output Model.

The right figure includes the effect of being a teenage parent in terms

of social, mental, emotional and spiritual.

The left figure includes the effect of being a young parent among senior

high school students.

Chapter 2

Research Methodology

This section presents the research design, locale, sample and sampling

technique, research instrument, data gathering procedure, statistical

treatment of data, and ethical consideration.

Research Design

The study used qualitative research design since the study assessed the

effects of being a teenage parent to the academic performance of selected

Senior High School Students.

Furthermore, the research used thematic analysis and inductive coding

method in analyzing the answers of the participants. Thematic analysis is a

method of analyzing qualitative data.It is usually applied to a set of texts, such

as interview or transcript. The researchers closely examines the data to

identify common themes-topics, ideas and patterns of meaning that cope up

repeatedly while coding is the process of classifying and arranging qualitative

data in order to find distinct themes and their connections. The researchers

gave labels to terms or phrases that signify essential themes in each

response while classifying respondent’s feedback. However the researcher

prefer choosing words or short phrases because they are simpler to recall,

skim, and arrange. Specifically, inductive coding, also known as open coding,

begins with a blank slate and produces codes depending on the qualitative

data. The researcher did not have a predetermined codebook; all codes come

from the survey results themselves. This method were used to gather data on
12

students of Humanities and Social Science (HUMMS) on personal description

of the Effect Being a Teenage Parent.

Setting of the Study

The study was conducted at Cardona Senior High School located at

Estacio Blvd. Dalig Cardona Rizal since we're going to measure the Effect of

being sa Teenage Parent among Senior High School.

Cardona Senior High School formerly Bernardo F. San Juan Integrated

School, was established last May 22,2018 by the local administration of

Cardona, Rizal in response to the National all Government's program for free

education where by government units were mandate to establish a public high

school.

At present, CSHS stand alone as public school that aims to provide free

and quality education for Senior High School Students.

Subject of the Study

The respondents of the study were the 10 students in all track from

Grade-11 and Grade-12 Senior High School . They were selected using

Simple random sampling. The researchers develop a questions about the

effect of being a teenage parent among Grade-11 and Grade-12 students.

Sources of Data

In gathering the needed data the researchers utilized owned interview

guide by getting the questions from the Statement of the Problem to be

answered by the respondents, especially the teenage parent living in Cardona

Rizal, to gather information that can help the researchers to make

their study credible.

Validation of the Instrument

The research instruments will be subjected for faced validation by

Humanities and Social Science (HUMMS) teacher and English teachers to

measure the accuracy of what it was designed to measure. Research

corrections and suggestions will be applied to the interview guide.

14

Procedure of the Study

This part deals with the step that the researchers went through so as to

come up with this work

The study was conducted at Cardona Senior High School during the

academic year 2022-2023.

First step is planning, the researchers studied what could be the

problem to be considered and improved. Second is the formulation of the

problem. The researchers identified the problem and then they proposed a

title. The researchers instructor chose the best topic and it was entitled Effect

Of Being a Teenage Parent of Selected Senior High School Students. After

the approval of the title the researchers started working for the development

of chapters 1 and 2.

To develop the said chapters, the researchers began to read articles

and search for foreign and local literature related to study. They also look to

the legal basis that helped them justify the study. The researchers also

develop the research methodology.

After completing the content of chapters 1 and 2, they were submitted

to the research instructor and after that, interview guide followed to come up

with the results of the effect of teenage parent among senior high school

students.
15

“Education”.P6-NU stated “BSN” P7-PSY mentioned “Psychology”.P8-BAS

shared “BSSA” P9-SNTG stated “Nutritions and Dietitian” P10-INT stated

“educ”

This means that the respondents have a different course they want in

college but most of them wants to take educational course. However a

teenage parent can still get what courses they want if they continue their

study after they get pregnant. It implied that they may need to prioritize

courses that have good job prospects and pay well to support their family.

Balancing academic demands and parenting responsibilities can be

challenging. Therefore, choosing a course that aligns with their schedule can

help avoid conflicts and ensure that they have enough time for both school

works and family responsibilities.

21

Base on the result it can be implied that even though they are already a

teenage parents they still choose to continue to study so that they have

courses that they want in college. A teenage parent’s choice of college

course has immense implications on their future and their child. Therefore, it’s

essential to consider their personal and professional goals, their available

resources, and how they can balance academic and parenting responsibilities

to build a bright future for themselves and their family.

This is an accordance with the study of Jose Molina (2015) examined

factors that influence the college major choices of adolescent mothers. The

study found that adolescent mothers were likely to select majors that had a

direct connection to their role as a parent, such as child development,

education and social work. These majors allowed them to gain knowledge and

skill that could be applied to their parenting responsibilities and also provide

opportunities for employment in fields related to child care.

The gathered data presents the perception of the Participants with

regards to their dream job.

According to the comments and suggestions of the Participants with

regards to their dream job. P1-UNT stated “teacher” P2-TMP mentioned

23

mentioned “to be a psychologist” P8-BAS shared “Secretary” P9-SNT stated

“Med Related” P10-INT stated “to become a teacher”.

This means that the respondents have a different dream job however

most of the respondents dream job is to become a teacher also that a

teenage parent can still get their dream job even if they are already a parent.

Based on the result it can be implied that even though they are already

a teenage parent they still choose to continue to study so that they have their

dream job after accomplishing their study. The teenage parent can consider

the required time commitment for the job and find ways to balance their

Parental responsibilities. Pursuing a dream job as a teenage parent brings

additional responsibilities and considerations.

However, it’s essential to consider the implications on parental

responsibilities, financial cost, career growth potential, work life balance, and

passion. By doing, so teenage parents can accomplish their goals. Find

fulfillment and balance their parental and career responsibilities.

This is an accordance with the study of Hall, Hadson Boddy & Chenoweth

(2014). This article explores an engagement process undertaken by

Australian government social workers in one disadvantage locality prior to the

introduction of federal “teenage parent” welfare reforms. The focus of

engagement was to learn about young parents experiences and aspirations,

and to draw on this to inform policy implementation. The authors suggest that

problematizing early parenting may itself be risky and may obscure

opportunities for building on parental role as a source of inspiration.

According to the comments and suggestions of the participants with

regards to the reaction of a teenage parent. P1-UNT stated that “I’m shocked”

P2-TMPmentioned that “I was emotional” P3-CRG said “Fear and excited” P4-

CRG stated “Nervous,I’m too young to start a family” P5-ED said

“shocked, honestly I can’t believe it at first, in one mistake and everything

“mixed reactions” P8-BAS shared that “I was scared” P9-SNTG stated that

“Feel nervous and happy at the same time” P10-INT shared that “I was

shocked and get emotional”.

This means that the respondents have a different reactions after

knowing that they are about to become a parent at their age, however only

one of the respondents has mixed reactions. It implied that a teenage parent

may experience shame, guilt and face social judgment as a result of their

responsibility. These feelings can lead to issue such as depression and

anxiety, which may worsen if not addressed.

Based on the result it can be implied that it’s natural that a teenage

parent have a different reactions once they know that they are already a

parent. On the other hand one of them has a mixed reaction after knowing

that he/she is already a parent. Overall being a teenage parent may lead to a

variety of reactions. These reactions may negatively impact the student’s

emotional, social, and academic well-being. Hence it’s essential to develop

appropriate coping strategies, seek support from trusted individuals, and

maintain a positive mindset to overcome these challenges. Additionally,

pursuing education and job opportunities can help teenage parents establish

themselves financially, providing a secure future for their family.

26

This is an accordance with the study of Weed, Nicholson (2015)

Pregnant and Parenting teens not only encounter challenges associated with

their early transition to parenthood, but also are confronted with unfavorable

attitudes of others. A university sample of 255 men and women responded to

surveys targeting their feelings and beliefs about pregnant teens, teen

mothers and fathers. Risks attributed to early childbearing may be

exacerbated by negative social evaluations.

The gathered data presents the perception of the participants with

regards to the ways that they do after knowing that they are about to become

a parent.

According to the comments and suggestions of the participants with

regards to the ways that the teenage parent do. P1-UNT stated that "I prayed

and asked for God's guidance for me and for my baby" P2-TMP mentioned

that "I confessed to my parents" P3-CRG said that "I prepare myself to

become a parent". P4-CRG stated that "I planned how to start it" P5-ED said

"I confront my grandparent me and my boyfriend told them about this and we

decided to get married". P6-PNU stated that "I prepare myself in the next

chapter or when I give birth to my son" P7-PSY mentioned that "First I hide, it

from my parent but I decided to tell it because it's better for them to know for

my own good". P8-BAS shared that "I seek help to my family" P9-SNTG

stated that "i Avoided activities that may harm my pregnancy" P10-INT shared

that "I tell to my parents about my situation".

28

This means that the respondents has a different ways that they do after

knowing that they already a parents. However most of them choose to

confess to their parents about the situation that they are facing as a teenage

parent.

Based on the result it implied that a teenage parent still needs their

parent's support so they don't have a choice but to tell to them the truth,so

that they can prepare themselves on becoming a parent. However, becoming

a parent at a young age does not necessarily mean that they will not be able

to succeed in life. Many teenage parents have overcome obstacles and gone

on to achieve their goals, often with the help of supportive family members,

friends, and community services. With determination, hard work, and access

to resources, teenage parents can provide their child with a positive and

nurturing environment and create a bright future for themselves and their

family.

This is an accordance with the study of Alina Morawska, Cassandra K

Dittman, Julie C Rusby Clinical child and family psychology (2019) Teenage

parents may learn parenting skills, such as how to provide basic care for their

child and how to promote their child's development. A study published in

Clinical child and family psychology found that teenage mothers who

participated in a home-visiting program that provided parenting education had

better child-rearing practices compared to those who did not receive the

program.
