Subject Verb Concord Rules
Subject Verb Concord Rules
1.There or Here
When sentences start with "there" or "here," the subject will always be placed after the verb.
Some care needs to be taken to identify each part correctly.
2.If two subjects are joined by "and," they typically require a plural verb form.
The cow and the pig are jumping over the moon.
Billy and Jake are going to the movies.
But When two single nouns present one thing or idea hence, a singular verb will be used. i.e.
'is'.
INCORRECT-Bread and butter are taken together for breakfast.
The correct sentence will be - Bread and butter is our usual breakfast.
5.If one subject is singular and the other is plural and the words are connected by the words
"or," "nor," "neither/nor," "either/or," or "not only/but also," use the verb form of the subject
that is nearest the verb.
Either the bears or the lion has escaped from the zoo.
Neither the lion nor the bears have escaped from the zoo.
*If the compound subject contains both singular and plural nouns, the verb takes the
form of the closest subject .
Neither the batteries nor the machines operate as intended.
Neither the batteries nor the machine operates as intended.
This rule only applies when the compound subject is joined by "or" or "nor".
6.A collective noun, such as "team" or "staff," can be either singular or plural depending
upon the rest of the sentence. Typically, they take the singular form, as the collective noun is
treated as a cohesive single unit.
Incorrect Your class teacher or the principal sanction your leave application.
Correct Your class teacher or the principal sanctions your leave application.
In this statement, the two nouns class teacher and principal are connected using “or” and
therefore the verb used is singular i.e. sanctions.
Incorrect Shiva and his friends meets every week at the cafeteria
Correct Shiva and his friends meet every week at the cafeteria.
In this statement, the plural noun “friends” is closest to the verb and therefore will be plural
i.e., meet.
Exception
This book, as well as all the other books of this writer, is boring.
Rule 9. Mass nouns like Civics, Mathematics, Dollars are the Subject
Mass nouns like civics, mathematics, measles, and news which cannot be counted use
singular verbs under the rules of Subject-Verb Agreement.
Question 1-
Which one is more appropriate?
1. Give me four five rupee notes.
2. Give me four five rupees notes.
3. Give me four fives rupees notes.
4. Give me four five rupee note.
With cardinal adjectives like two, three, the, etc. a plural noun is used.
Example: Three books are kept under the table.
INCORRECT: The candidate, along with her supporters, leave the building.
CORRECT: The candidate, along with her supporters, leaves the building.
INCORRECT:The employees of the organization, as well as the CEO, has an interest in the
project’s success.
CORRECT:The employees of the organization, as well as the CEO, have an interest in the
project’s success.
Rule 12. If the subject is singular, the verb will also be singular
The number of subjects is not influenced by expressions like accompanied by, in addition to
or including. If the subject is singular, the verb will also be singular and it will remain so
irrespective of such expressions.
For example:
Some men are needed for the battle.
Few boys were absent.
Some parents were enquiring.
Many people were injured.
Both of the twins are lazy.
Few know what really happened that day.
Several have reached the hotel.
RULE : When any of 'few, many, several, both, all, some' is used with an uncountable
noun, the verb is singular.
“Anyone,” “everyone,” “someone,” “no one,” and “nobody” always require singular verbs.
Words that indicate portions of a whole, such as “percent,” “fraction,” “some,” “none,” and
“remainder,” require a singular verb only if the object of the preposition is singular.
“Who,” “that,” and “which” can be singular or plural, according to the noun directly in
front of them.
I, who is your good friend, will help you everytime.
The phrase introduced by “as well as” or “along with” modifies the earlier word but doesn’t
compound the subjects.
When a phrase comes between the subject and the verb, remember that the verb still agrees
with the subject, not the noun or pronoun in the phrase following the subject of the sentence.
Example: The student, as well as the committee members, is excited.
Example: The student with all the master’s degrees is very motivated.
RULE
Plural form subjects with a plural meaning take a plural verb. (e.g. scissors, trousers)
The scissors are on the table.
The trousers are torn.
The police are investigating, and not "The police is investigating".
The word "police" is treated as a plural noun in English. It refers to a group of law
enforcement officers and always takes a plural verb.
The pair of scissors is on the table.
Note: In this example, the subject of the sentence is pair; therefore, the verb must agree
with it. (Because scissors is the object of the preposition, scissors does not affect the
number of the verb.)
