1. Five equal charges are arrange according to figure 1. What is the force on a charge
q located at the center of the semicircle?

2. The following figures show the field lines corresponding to two charged particles.
Determine for each case the relative charges and their signs.

3. A charge q1 = +6nC is placed at the origin and another charge q2 = +10nC at


(6, 0). a) What is the electric field at (0, 8)?, b) where we should place a charge
q3 = +1nC to cancel the electric field at (0, 8)? And c) where we should place a
charge q4 = −1nC to cancel the electric at (0, 8)?

4. Two particles with equal positive charge Q are located along the X axis at x = −a/2
and x = +a/2. Determine: a) the magnitude and direction of the electric field for
every point along the Y axis; b) the electric field in the limit y >> a.

5. Two particles with equal charge magnitude but different signs +Q and −Q are
located along the X axis at x = −a/2 and x = a/2. Determine: a) the magnitude
and direction of the electric field for every point along the Y axis; b) the magnitude
of the electric field in the limit y >> a.

6. Two massless point charges +9Q and −Q are fixed on the x-axis at x = −d and
x = d (see Figure 3): a) Is there any point x0 in the x-axis where the electric field
is zero? Where is it?, b) A third point charge q of mass m is free to move along the
x-axis. What force does it feel if it is placed at x = x0 ?, c) If q is displaced along
the x-axis a distance a to the right of x0 . What force does it feel?, d) What should
be the sign of q so that the previous force pulls q back to x = x0 ?.

7. An electron moving with speed v = 2 × 106 m/s enters a region with a uniform
electric field with magnitude E = 400 N/C in the direction perpendicular to the
electron movement. A) What is the acceleration of the electron? b) what is the
trajectory of the electron? and c) what is the distance travelled by the electron in
10ns and the deviation from its original direction?

8. A charge Q = 5µC is distributed uniformly in volume in an sphere of radius R =


20cm. a) What is the charge density ρ? b) If the charge is distributed uniformly on
the surface what is the charge density σ? c) If the charge is distributed uniformly
on a filament along the equator what is the charge density λ?
9. A charge of 3µC is uniformly distributed along a filament of length 60 cm. What is
the electric field at a point 30 cm from one of the ends along the filament direction?

10. Calculate the electric field on the z axis created by a circle of radius R charged
uniformly and centered on the (x,y) plane, with a constant surface charge density
