Advance traffic
management system
introduction
ATMS was introduced as an integrated Traffic
management and Recue console. The traffic
management and recue console , under the
leadership of the ATMS control center, is
intended to introduce an automated check – list
based approach to ensure an integrated and
efficient service delivery to the various
stakeholders to prevent accident and in case the
accident does happen, then timely coordinated
action in rescuing accident victims and early
restoration of traffic .
Advanced Traffic Management System is a unique
advanced traffic managment system that
integrates following sub-system: -
VMS – Variable Message Sign
VIDC - Video Incident Detection Camera
ECB – Emergency Call Box
ATCC – Automatic Traffic Counter cum Classifier
System
WMS – Weather Monitoring System
MCS – Mobile Communication System
CCR - Control Center room
VMS – Variable Message Sign
Variable Message Signs or VMS, as they are often shortened to in the industry, are a form of one-way
communication between the owner and drivers or pedestrians. They are a type of light-emitting signage
that can display both text and/or pictograms.

Types of Variable Message Signs :-

Although you can break down the categories further and define
different styles, for the sake of ease, you can break down Variable
Message Signs into two major types:
Static VMS : - these are the more common ones you are likely
to encounter, and as the name suggests, they are fixed in one
location. To put this into context, think of this as a sign mounted
above a motorway or road, or the LED signs in a car parking
structure.
Moveable VMS: - the second type of Variable Message Signs
can be moved around to fit more ad-hoc usage. A good example
would be when temporary work is going on, or to alert foot
traffic of changes in upcoming conditions.
Vehicle Speed Detection System(VSDS)
VSDS system captures real-time data on vehicle speed and license plate information, which
can be used for a variety of purposes, including monitoring traffic flow, detecting speed
violators, and enhancing public safety.
The data collected by the VSDS can be used to identify traffic patterns, such as peak traffic
hours, average speed, and traffic volume. This information can be used to optimize traffic flow
and reduce congestion. The system can also help identify areas where speeding is a problem,
allowing law enforcement officials to take action to reduce accidents and improve public
safety.
VSDS is capable of detecting high speeds . The
system uses radar-based speed detection
technology to measure the speed of passing
vehicles accurately. This feature is particularly
useful for high-speed highways, where speed
violations can pose a significant risk to public
safety. The VSDS can help detect speed violators,
enabling law enforcement officials to take action
and reduce accidents.

VSDS uses radar-based speed detection to measure the

speed of each vehicle passing by. The radar-based
speed detection allows for real-time monitoring of
traffic speed and provides valuable data for traffic
management and enforcement. This feature enables
officials to detect speed violators, identify areas with
high-speed traffic, and take action to reduce accidents
and improve public safety.
Automatic Traffic Counter and Classifier(ATCC)
An Automatic Traffic Counter and Classifier (ATCC) is a sophisticated system used
to monitor and analyze vehicular traffic. These systems are essential for traffic
management, urban planning, and infrastructure development. Here are some
key aspects:

Key Features:
1.Vehicle Counting: Accurately counts the number of
vehicles passing through a specific point.
2.Vehicle Classification: Categorizes vehicles into
different types such as cars, trucks, buses,
motorcycles, etc.
3.Real-Time Data: Provides real-time traffic data,
which is crucial for immediate traffic management
and long-term planning.
Applications:
1.Urban Planning: Assists city planners in
designing better road networks.
2.Traffic Studies: Used by researchers and
traffic authorities to study traffic patterns
and trends.

3.Toll Plazas: Helps in auditing and

managing toll collections.
4.Smart City Projects: Integral part
of smart city infrastructure for
efficient traffic management.
Traffic Monitoring Camera System( TMCS )

A traffic monitoring camera

system is designed to observe
and manage traffic flow,
enhance road safety, and assist
in incident detection. Here are
some key components and
features of these systems:
Features:
1.Real-Time Monitoring: Provides live
video feeds to traffic management
centers.
2.Incident Detection: Uses AI and
machine learning to detect accidents,
traffic jams, and other incidents.
4.Data Analytics: Collects and analyzes traffic data to
optimize traffic flow and improve infrastructure
planning.
4.Automated Alerts: Sends notifications to relevant
authorities for quick response to incidents.
5.Integration: Can be integrated with other systems like
traffic lights, variable message signs, and emergency
response systems.
Video Incident Detection System(VIDS)

A Video Incident Detection System (VIDS) is an advanced technology that uses video analytics
to monitor and detect incidents in real-time. These systems are particularly useful for
enhancing traffic management and safety on highways, tunnels, bridges, and urban areas.
Here are some key features and benefits:
Key Features:
1.Real-Time Monitoring: Continuous surveillance of traffic conditions using strategically placed
cameras.
2.Advanced Analytics: Utilizes AI and machine learning algorithms to analyze video feeds and
detect incidents such as accidents, fires, and vehicle breakdowns.
3.Automated Alerts: Sends immediate notifications to traffic management centers and
emergency responders when an incident is detected.
4.Integration: Can be integrated with existing traffic management systems for seamless
operation.
5.Scalability: Flexible and scalable to cover large areas or specific critical points.
Benefits:
Enhanced Road Safety: Quick detection and
response to incidents help prevent secondary
accidents and reduce the severity of incidents.
Improved Traffic Flow: By identifying and
addressing incidents promptly, VIDS helps
maintain smooth traffic flow and reduce
congestion.

3.Data Collection: Provides valuable

data for traffic analysis and future
planning.
4.Cost-Effective: Reduces the need for
manual monitoring and increases
efficiency.
Emergency Call Box (ECB)
An emergency call box system is a crucial safety feature designed
to provide immediate communication during emergencies. These
systems are commonly found in public areas such as highways,
parking lots, campuses, and parks. Here are some key aspects of
emergency call box systems:
1.Components:
1. Call Box: A robust, weatherproof unit with a simple
interface, usually a single button to connect directly to
emergency services.
2. Communication Network: Can be analog, digital, or wireless,
ensuring connectivity even in remote areas.
3. Control Center: Monitors incoming calls and dispatches
emergency services as needed.
2.Applications:
1. Roadside Assistance: Helps stranded motorists by
connecting them to emergency services.
Weather Monitoring System (WMS)
A weather monitoring system is a setup that collects and analyzes data about the weather. These
systems can range from simple home weather stations to complex automated weather stations
(AWS) used for research and operational purposes.
Here are some key components and features of weather monitoring systems:
1.Sensors: Measure various weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and
direction, barometric pressure, and precipitation.
2.Data Logger: Records the data collected by the sensors.
3.Transmission System: Sends the data to a central location for analysis. This can be done via Wi-Fi,
cellular networks, or satellite.
4.Display Unit: Shows real-time weather data and trends. Some advanced systems also integrate
with smart home devices like Alexa.
5.Software: Analyzes the data and provides forecasts, alerts, and historical trends.
