MA 2006 Tutorial 4

1. Show that (u × v ) × w = (u • w ) v − ( v • w )u. (Hint. Let u = a i + b j + ck,

v = p i + q j + rk and w = s i + t j + uk and work out separately the left and the
right hand sides of the given equation in terms of a, b, c, p, q, r, s, t and u. Show that
the two sides give the same expression.)

2. (a) With reference to a Cartesian coordinate system 0xyz, find the plane that contains
the points (2, 1, 3), (3, 0, 2) and (−1, 1, 4) (Hint. One way of doing this is to find two
vectors that lie on the plane and use them to obtain a vector perpendicular to the
plane.)

(b) A straight line perpendicular to the plane in part (a) passes through the point (−2,
5, −2) Give a parametric representation for the straight line.

(c) Find the point where the plane in part (a) and the straight line in part (b) intersect.

3. Find all unit magnitude vectors that are perpendicular to the vector i − k . (Hint. Let
a i + b j + ck be a general vector that is perpendicular to i − k . Form a linear
algebraic equation in a, b and c. Find all solutions of the single linear algebraic
equation. How can you ensure that a i + b j + ck is of unit magnitude?)

4. Find a parametric representation for each of the following surfaces:

(a) 36( x − 1)2 + 25 y 2 + 9( z + 2)2 =

36 (ellipsoidal surface)

(b) 1 + x 2 + y 2=
− z 0 for 2 ≤ z ≤ 9.
MA 2006 Tutorial 5

1. For the vector function G (t ) =

−3cos(2t ) i + 3sin(2t ) j + k, find:

dG dG dG dG
(a) G • G (b) • (c) G • (d) G ×
dt dt dt dt

(Hint. The answer for part (d) can be deduced from parts (a), (b) and (c). What does
your answer in part (c) tell you?)

2. A point mass is moving on a plane. With reference to a Cartesian coordinate frame

0xy on the plane, the position is given by x = 1 + t and y= 9 − t 2 (m), where t ≥ 0
is time in second (s).

(a) Sketch the path travelled by the point mass during the period from t = 0 to t = 3
(s). (Hint. To get a clearer idea of the path of the point mass, find a relationship
between the x and the y co-ordinates of the point mass by eliminating t )

(b) Calculate the velocity of the point mass at time t = 5 (s).

(c) If the point mass represents a body of constant mass 5 kg, find the total force
acting on it.

3. Find a function ψ ( x, y ) such that

∇ψ = (−2 y sin(2 xy ) + 4 y cos(2 xy ) + 4 x3 − 2) i + (−2 x sin(2 xy ) + 4 x cos(2 xy ) + 5 y 4 − 12 y ) j .

4. If f ( x, y, z ) = x 2 + y 2 + 3 z 2 + xy + 3xz + 3 yz + x + y + 2 z + 10 , find all points

( x, y , z )
such that ∇f =0 . (Here 0 = 0 i + 0 j + 0k ) Give a geometrical
interpretation of all those points.

5. Find the function φ ( x, y ) such that

φ (3x 2 + 4 y ) i + (4 y + 4 x + 3) j and φ (1,3) = 5.
