MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) - BOTANY
EFFECTIVE FROMACADEMIC SESSION 2019-20
SCHOOL OF APPLIED SCIENCES, SHRI VENKATESHWARA UNIVERSITY, GAJRAULA
OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMME
Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Botany programme is intended to develop learning about Botany and
the significance of Flora ranging from single cell algae to multicellular complex plant systems. We
have carefully balanced classical and modern Biological Courses to introduce and emphasize skill-
based programs, including an internship experience. Apart from the classical topics on Botany,
namely Taxonomy and Systematics, Anatomy of plants, Ecology, and Plant Physiology, this
syllabus also covers emerging field and scope-oriented area of Biological Sciences such as
Genetics, Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Biostatistics, and
Bioinformatics. The M.Sc. Botany Programme also focuses on various application-based and skill-
based courses such as Environmental Aspects, Wildlife and its Ecological Values, and
Conservation. This program through the dissertation will also help the students to understand the
basic principles of nature and will also provide scope for hands-on experience to experiment with
nature/plants and thereby enable them to develop aptitude for research in various allied fields of
Biological Sciences.
PEO-1: To inculcate the understanding of diverse and complex fields of Botany like Systematics
and Taxonomy, Anatomy and Physiology, Evolutionary Biology and Ecology, Cell biology, Molecular
biology and Biochemistry,
PEO-2: To provide an appropriate foundation for a career in biomedical and agricultural sciences
and effectively train for various challenges of the society.
PEO-3: To train academically sound researchers and intellectuals in the area of Botany, like
Genetics, biotechnology, microbiology, paleology and Conservation.
PEO-4: Help increase the entrepreneurial skills with bioethics in place and kick-start the
Professionalism aiding the industrial needs.
PEO-5: Understands about various concepts of Botany and its importance in human health.
PEO-6: To impart modern research and technological skills amongst the master’s students in
order to become professionals and leaders in the sector of Botanical sciences.
Page 2
PROGRAM OUTCOMES (POs):
PO-1: To equip students with comprehensive knowledge of botanical principles, theories, and
methodologies, focusing on the structure, function, and diversity of plant life.
PO-2: To develop students' ability to design, conduct, and analyse scientific research in Botany using
advanced experimental techniques and data analysis tools.
PO-5: To cultivate the ability to critically analyse botanical problems and develop innovative
solutions through interdisciplinary approaches.
PO-7: To impart ethical practices and a sense of responsibility towards society, plants, and the
environment, while adhering to professional botanical standards.
PO-8: To deepen understanding of evolutionary biology and its role in shaping plant behaviour,
adaptation, and speciation.
PO-9: To prepare students for diverse career opportunities in academia, research, environmental
consulting, and biotechnology while encouraging continuous learning.
PO-10: To emphasize the importance of Botany in addressing global challenges such as climate
change, habitat destruction, and invasive species, while also addressing local ecological and
botanical issues.
PSO-1: Understand and analyse the evolutionary and ecological significance of different plant
taxa.
PSO-2: Analyse the mechanisms involved in life processes at the molecular level.

1. To develop advanced research skills and critical thinking necessary for
exploring complex biological problems in Botany.
2. To foster the ability to design, execute, and analyse experiments or
COURSE fieldwork in a specialized area of Botany.
OBJECTIVES 3. To enhance the capacity to synthesize scientific literature, identify
research gaps, and contribute novel findings to the field.
4. To cultivate proficiency in scientific communication, including writing
research papers and presenting findings to diverse audiences.
The final semester introduces the concept of Project Work & Viva-Voce (Dissertation), enabling
students to engage in preliminary research in both Major and experiment. In the project work, the
student will explore new developments from the books and journals, collect literature and data,
and write a dissertation file based on his or her project work proposal. The project can also be
based on experimental work in industries or research laboratories.
The first thing that students need to do is find an intriguing topic for project. Here are some basic
Page 60
ideas that may help in the selection of a suitable topic:
Choose a topic or something in which you are interested. If you are interested in your topic, the
research process will become more feasible and interesting for you.
Read more and more references on your topic and prepare yourself to investigate the possible
solutions to your research problems (what exactly you are looking for). As a result, you will be able
to concentrate on your investigation process.
To help you choose and narrow down the topic, read about its background.
Discuss your research ideas and plans with your supervisor; he or she will suggest feasible
methods, so find your research solutions within the stipulated time.
The first and foremost things you must understand before commencing your dissertation work are:
Ask yourself why you have chosen this topic instead of WHY, WHO, WHAT, WHERE, or HOW.
WHY is it intriguing to you? How do you feel about your research problems?
WHO will give you information about your dissertation topic? Who could help you with your
results analysis, further writing, and publication?
WHAT questions are coming to mind regarding your dissertation? What are the possible
methods to address it scientifically?
WHERE does the significance of your project work reside? Where does its applicability lie,
whether local, national, or global?
HOW is your research so important? Would your research ideas encourage a larger audience
across time periods?
Selection of Topic:
1. Students will make project which should be preferably a working of the thoughts based on
their subject.
2. Every students of MSc III semester will be assigned a faculty guide and under his/her
guidance, students will carried their dissertation work.
3. The assessment of performance of the students should be made at least twice in the
semester. The students shall present the final project live using over head projector power
point presentation on LCD to the CIA committee and the ESE examiner in the form of seminar.
4. The evaluation committee shall consists of faculty members constituted by the college which
would be comprised of at least three members comprising of the department Coordinator’s,
Class Coordinator and a nominee of the Dean. The seminar session shall be an open house
session. The CIA marks would be the average of the marks given by each members of the
committee separately to the director in a sealed envelope.
1. All students pursuing M.Sc. Shall select and propose a topic of dissertation in the first week of
the semester. Care should be taken that the topic selected is not directly related to the
subjects of the course being pursued or thesis work, if any. The proposed topic should be
Page 61
submitted to the course coordinator.
2. The course coordinator shall forward the list of the topics to the coordinator of concerned
department, who will consolidate the list including some more topics, in consultation with the
faculty of the department. The topics will then be allocated to the students alongwith the
name of the faculty guide and also forwarded to the director for approval.
3. On approval by the Dean, the list shall be displayed on the notice board and the students will
also be accordingly informed by the course coordinator within three weeks of the
commencement of the semester.
Preparation of Dissertation:
1. The student shall meet the supervisor for the necessary guidance for their preparation
for the seminar.
2. During the next two to four weeks the student will read the primary literature related
to the topic under the guidance of supervisor.
3. After necessary collection of data and literature survey, the students must prepare a
report. The report shall be arranged in the sequence as per following format & layout
plan:-
A. Top Sheet of transparent plastic.
B. Top cover.
C. Preliminary pages.
