4] TARGET STRENGHT FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

fck = fck + t x s ( s value is taken from IS 10262, table- 2 )

fck = 30 + 1.7 x 5 = 38.25 N / mm2

5] SELECTION OF WATER - CEMENT RATIO

Maximum water - cement ratio = 0.45 ( AS IS 456 , TABLE NO. 05, PAGE NO. 20 )

Based on experience , adopt water-cement ratio as 0.35

0.45 > 0.35 , hence O.K

6] SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT. :

From Table 2 , Maximum water content for 20 mm aggregate = 186 kgs ( for 25 to 50 mm slump range )

Estimated water content for 100-150 mm slump 125 mm Avg.

= 186 + 12 / 100 x 186 = 208 kgs

As superplasticizer is used , the water content can be reduced up to 45 percent .

Based on trials with superplasticizer water content reduction of 32.69 % has been achieved .

Hence , the arrived water content = 208 x 0.6731 = 140 kgs

7] CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Water - cement ratio. = 0.35

Cement content = 140 / 0.35 = 400.62 kgs say 400 kgs / m3

From IS 456 : 2009,Table 5, Page No.20, minimum cement content for severe exposure condition = 320 kg / m3 .

And minimum cement for M 30 grade = 320 kgs / m3

400 kg / m3 > 320 kg / m3 > 320 kgs / m3 , hence , O.K

8] MIX CALCULATIONS
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows :

a) Volume of concrete = 1.00 m3

b) Volume of entrapped air in wet concrete = 0.01 m3

c) Volume of cement = Mass of cement X 1

Specific gravity of cement 1000
= 400 / 3.15 X 1 = 0.1270 m3
1000
e) Volume of water = Mass of water X 1
Specific gravity of water 1000
= 140 / 1 X 1 = 0.140 m3
1000
f) Volume of chemical admixture 1.2% by = Mass of admixture X 1
mass of cement (= 400 x 1.2% 4.80 kgs ) Specific gravity of admixture 1000
= 4.80 / 1.08 X 1 = 0.0044 m3
1000
g) Volume of all in aggregate = [a - ( b + c + d + e + f ) ]
= 0.7184 m3
h) Mass of 10 mm aggregate = g x volume of CA- 10.0 mm x Specific gravity of CA- 10 mm
x 1000
= 0.7184 x 0.220 x 2.78 x 1000
= 439 kgs
i) Mass of 20.0 mm aggregate = g x volume of CA- 20.0 mm x Specific gravity of CA- 20.0 mm
x 1000
= 0.7184 x 0.31 x 2.81 x 1000
= 626 kgs
j) Mass of fine aggregate ( Crushed sand ) = f x volume of c.sand x Specific gravity of c.sand
x 1000
= 0.7184 x 0.47 x 2.71 x 1000
= 915 kgs
9] MIX PROPORTIONS FOR TRIAL :

CEMENT 10 mm 20 mm c.sand water w /c Admixture Density

400 439 626 915 140 0.35 4.80 2520

REMARKS :
The above recommendation are based on the use of saturated surface dry materials so that
due allowance must be made at site for the moisture content and absorption in the aggregates.
Admixture dosage can varies between 0.8 to 1.5 % accordingly atmospheric condition .
