TREVOR’S ESCAPES
I watched a TV documentary recently, which featured Trevor Baylis, the man
who invented the wind-up radio, and he mentioned that he was an
escapologist! What exactly did he do?

Trevor was an accomplished swimmer in his younger days (he swam for great
Britain when he was just 15!) and worked for a company called Purley Pools which
developed swimming pools. He subsequently got into stunt work and worked as an
entertainer/escapologist - diving into ‘clear-sided’ pools and escaping from things like handcuffs! He staged an
elaborate underwater escape while working for the Berlin Circus, and make a pretty penny out of it, which bought

It is obviously not about your worth but your

proud of themselves, they have a high perceived

Among them Penn & Teller, Lance Burton

then, he has worked his way up to arrive on

to put wild and crazy things in the show. I
would never put in a live tiger because, in my
opinion, it is very disrespectful for any
magicians to use tigers because it is linked to
Siegfried and Roy’s name. Even when they
were performing there were other magicians
doing tiger ticks. My ideas are different. There
are only one or two animals I would use: a
sheep or a penguin and I’ve decided to use a
sheep in one of my future illusions!

In my show you’re going to see some great

magic, some things that fool you silly. It is all
about the magic, it is all about having a great
time, to me there are so many ways someone
can be inspired by my show

People, mostly magicians, often accuse you of

being a clone of David Copperfield. What do you
say to that?
Here is what I hear. From laymen, I have never
heard that once and there is no one that
respects David more than I do. I’d take a bullet
for the guy. What he has done for magic, what
he has done for our art is amazing. So, in my
opinion, I am offended when magicians say
that because every single one of the effects in
my show, except for a couple that are public
domain, like the motorcycle vanish, are original.

Of course David has used that vanish but so

have many other magicians.

But, it is true, that you are working with the same

type of magic as David Copperfield – I’m thinking
of the emotional pieces…
There was only a couple of magicians who did
things like that when I started. When you
watched Siegfried and Roy, it was a production
magic show, you look at Lance, also a
production magic show, he has got all the
dancers… Criss (Angel), I wanna say he is a
headliner magic show but, there are a lot of
other things there. To me, the way David and I
are similar would be that, with the exception of
Penn & Teller, we are the only performers who
can carry a whole show. And I say that not in
arrogance. Penn & Teller, they carry their own
show, there are no dancers, it is about their
intellect and their stories and they are brilliant
at what they do. David on the other hand is in
a completely different direction and I feel like,
you are going to see things in the show that
are reminiscent of family, with warm and fuzzy
feelings, you’re gonna see things, but all are
my character, they are me…

You already suspect for certain the great comedy

After you have managed with an apparently big

The routine is full of psychological details and very easy to do. The handmade gimmick is improved
