Load Icator

The Loadicator is a crucial tool for ship cargo officers, aiding in planning and controlling cargo and ballasting operations while ensuring structural limits are not exceeded. It calculates stress levels and provides essential data like bending moments and shear stress, but should not replace the ship's loading manual. Regular testing for accuracy is required, both by ship staff and during annual class surveys, to maintain compliance with safety standards.

LOADICATOR

The loading instrument is an invaluable shipboard calculation tool which assists the ship’s cargo officer
in:

1. Planning and controlling cargo and ballasting operations.

2. Rapidly calculating SWSF and SWBM for any load condition.

3. Identifying the imposed structural limits which are not to be exceeded.

Stress tables and stress calculating equipment are used to determine stress levels like bending
moments, shear forces, and torsional loads to ensure safe loading of cargo and ballast. They provide
guidance to ensure specified stress limits are not exceeded under any loading condition.

It is important to note that the loading instrument is not a substitute for the ship’s loading manual.
Therefore, the officer in charge should also refer to the loading manual when planning or controlling
cargo operations.

There are several on the market, generally custom made for individual vessels, and they provide the
operator with such items of information as:

1. Bending moment.

2. Shear stress at critical points.

3. Mean draught.

4. Trim of the vessel.

5. GM final, after loading.

6. Deadweight

A Loadicator is a software program that helps determine how a ship's structure, stability, and stress
levels are affected by its load and ballast. Loadicators are used to plan cargo and ballasting operations,
and to ensure the ship is stable.

How does a Loadicator work?

Uses ship-specific data to perform calculations

Calculates longitudinal strength, stresses, and drafts

Provides reports and allows viewing multiple loading conditions

Stores loading plans

Benefits of a Loadicator

Helps ensure the ship's stability remains within safe limits

Helps plan cargo and ballasting operations

Helps calculate stresses and drafts

Helps complete standard company or terminal loading and discharging forms

Loadicator Manual" or "Loading Manual" is a vital document used for planning and ensuring safe cargo
stowage, loading, and discharging operations, containing ship-specific data and calculations related to
stability, stresses, and operational limits.

Testing requirements for the Loadicators:

Testing by the ship staff:

The Loadicator is required to be tested periodically by the ship’s staff for its accuracy at intervals as
given in the SMS (Safety Management System) of the vessel.

The test procedure includes choosing a condition from the approved test conditions, entering the exact
same data in the loadicators and comparing the results with the approved test conditions. The
important point to note is that the data need to be manually entered and not opened from a pre-saved
file as it is not acceptable to classification society as well as OCIMF to simply retrieve a stored test
condition and comparing it with approved test condition.

Annual testing of Loadicator in presence of Class: During annual class surveys, loadicators need to be
tested for its accuracy in presence of a class surveyor. The class surveyor would ask for the print out of
the test condition and he would stamp it and give it to the ship for ship’s records.

Procedure for Certification: - The approved test conditions shall be tested on the loading computer
system in presence of a surveyor from the Society, before the loading computer certificate is issued.
