CLASS –IV, CHAPTER – 2, Adaptations in plants

TOPIC – TERRESTRIAL PLANTS

The place where an organism lives is called

its habitat. Humans generally live on land,
but plants and animals live on land and
water. Plants and animals show special
characteristics, allowing them to survive in a
particular habitat. These characteristics are
called adaptations.

Let’s understand more about the habitats

that plants grow and the adaptations:

● Terrestrial Plants
● Aquatic Plants

Terrestrial plants are found on land. They are plants that we can see in our
gardens, around our home and school.

We will now learn how the terrestrial plants adapt to these habitats:

● On Plains:
o These plants have broad flat leaves
o They have lots of branches
o The leaves help evaporate water and keep the
tree cool
o These trees shed their leaves during winter to
protect from cold weather

Q1. Why do trees growing in plains have broad and flat leaves?

usually waterlogged
o These plants have breathing roots that are
found above soil and are known as
mangroves

Q3. Why are roots of mangroves known as breathing roots?

hot and dry
o The leaves of some plants
are changed into spines that
saves water
o The stem is usually green,
thick and fleshy to perform
photosynthesis and store
water
o They have wide spreading
roots to help them with water
absorption
