Circulatory System in Humans_Microteaching

The circulatory system in humans is responsible for circulating oxygen, nutrients, and hormones while removing metabolic waste. It consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood, with the heart pumping blood through two types of circulation: pulmonary and systemic. Key components include arteries, veins, capillaries, and different types of blood cells that perform specific functions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Understanding the Understand the circulatory

circulatory organs system in humans
WHAT IS THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM?

The circulatory system is an important mechanism in the body that

circulates oxygen, nutrients, hormones and other substances throughout
the body. It also plays a role in the removal of metabolic waste, such as
carbon dioxide and toxins.
1. COMPONENTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

a. Heart
b. Blood Vessels
c. Blood
HEART
HEART

1.Right atrium: receives carbon

dioxide-rich blood from the body.
2.Right ventricle: pumps blood to
the lungs for gas exchange.
3.Left atrium: receives oxygen-rich
blood from the lungs.
4.Left ventricle: pumps blood to
the rest of the body through the
main artery (aorta).
BLOOD VESSELS
BLOOD VESSELS

Arteries: carry blood out of

the heart to the rest of the
body.
Veins: return blood to the
heart.
Capillaries: where substances
are exchanged between
blood and body cells.
BLOOD
BLOOD VESSELS

Blood plasma: a fluid that carries

nutrients, hormones, and waste
substances.
Red blood cells (erythrocytes):
contain haemoglobin to transport
oxygen.
White blood cells (leucocytes): play a
role in the immune system.
Blood clots (platelets): help the
blood clotting process.
TYPES OF
Types of Circulation
CIRCULATION
a. Small Circulatory (Pulmonary)
Blood from the right ventricle is pumped
to the lungs through the pulmonary artery
to release carbon dioxide and take in
oxygen. Then, the blood returns to the left
atrium through the pulmonary veins. TYPES OF
CIRCULATION
b. Large Circulatory (Systemic)
Blood from the left ventricle is pumped
throughout the body through the aorta,
providing oxygen and nutrients to the
body's cells. Afterwards, the blood returns
to the right atrium via the vena cava.
QUIZ

1. What is the main function of the heart in the

circulatory system?
A. Produces oxygen for the body
B. Pumping blood throughout the body
C. Filters the blood from toxins
D. Converts carbon dioxide into oxygen
Answer: B. Pumping blood throughout the body
Explanation: The heart functions as a pump that
circulates oxygenated blood throughout the body
through the arteries and returns carbon dioxide-rich
blood to the lungs for clearance.
QUIZ

2. The blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from

the heart to the rest of the body are....
A. Vena cava
B. Pulmonary artery
C. Aorta
D. Pulmonary vein
Answer: C. Aorta
Explanation: The aorta is the largest artery that carries
oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle of the heart to
the rest of the body.
QUIZ

3. What is the name of the part of the heart that

receives carbon dioxide-rich blood from the body?
A. The left atrium
B. Right atrium
C. Left ventricle
D. Right ventricle
Answer: B. Right atrium
Explanation: The right atrium receives blood containing
carbon dioxide from the rest of the body through the
vena cava before it is pumped to the lungs through the
right ventricle.
QUIZ

4. The type of blood vessel that connects arteries and veins

and plays a role in the exchange of substances is....
A. Arteries
B. Vein
C. Capillary
D. Aorta
Answer: C. Capillaries
Explanation: Capillaries are small blood vessels that
allow the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and
nutrients between the blood and the cells of the body.
