DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

FEDERAL UNIVERSITY DUTSE

Exercise
Map review
Map review
• A map review is performed because of two reasons. On the one hand a map
review provides a base to improve a map.
• On the other hand context information can be revealed dealing with
problems of the map; which remains concealed
during normal map use.
• A map review is also the first step to sensitise yourself for important design

aspects. This provides a good foundation for making own maps .

Your task:
• Write a report (submit to the class rep on 10 0ctober)
• Present it in class as a group (10 min – free speaking)

Map review contents:

1. Describe the map:
Map purpose, target user, information to be communicated, used
cartographic technique
2. Review and criticize the map
3. Final conclusion

Review and criticize the map (1)

• Basics: Visualization technique
– First Impression
– Graphical density
– Level of Generalisation

– Legend (position, size, structure, etc.)
– Map scale (style, position, size, etc.)

Review and criticize the map (2)

• Map construction: mapping techniques (classification,
symbolisation, ...)
• Special features in terms of colours, points, lines, areas,
labels, animation or interaction
• Give suggestions how to improve your map.
Code of ethics
• For thematic map cartographers
1. Always have a straightforward agenda, and have a defining purpose or goal
for each map
2. Always strive to know your audience, the potential/likely map users
3. Do not intentionally lie with data
4. Always show relevant data whenever possible
5. Data should not be discarded simply because they are contrary to the
position held by the cartographer
6. At a given scale, strive for an accurate portrayal of the data
7. The cartographer should avoid plagiarizing; report all data sources
8. Symbolization should not be selected to bias the interpretation of the map
9. The mapped result should be able to be repeated by other cartographers
10. Attention should be given to differing cultural values and principles
