Preparation
Because the paper is white, there may be white edges and creases visible throughout your map. To give your
map a more polished look, you can take a black marker, or one with matching colors of the pop-up, and go over
every white edge to color them.
Be careful with certain markers that may case bleed. This means that the color is soaked further into the paper
than just the edge. The more ink you apply, the further the bleed goes. Different types of paper behave
differently as well. I recommend to test on a paper scrap first before applying.
Creating creases
The blueprints show dotted lines along which you need to add a crease. There are several ways to make a
crease.
The most important thing is to make each crease sharp and bi-directional. Fold back and forth to make the
crease go smooth. If you don’t do this, each crease applies more tension to the pop-up and it may not fold
completely flat on its own.
You could lightly graze the line with the knife to make a micro-cut. This allows you to make an easy fold. The
downside is that paper layers may come off over time, and you will need to edge more as the white inside of the
paper becomes exposed.
If you don’t want to apply a micro-cut, I recommend carefully folding along a sharp object, like the edge of your
cutting mat or a metal ruler to make the first line. Once you have a straight fold, run the edge of a metal ruler
over the fold towards the crease, making it as sharp as you can. Do this both ways. There are also crease tools
like embossing pens to make your life easier.
Glueing
I recommend using a glue pen for glueing, as that will give you some precision on where you apply it. It is
important that you focus on the edges of each piece, especially those that fold back-to-back and tabs. Don’t
apply too much glue, this may cause warping of the paper and it may leak in unwanted places.
I often use a paper scrap to smudge a drop over the surface so everything is covered in a thin layer. If the glue
is running when held vertical, you have applied (far) too much.
